I think the Black & White Minstrel Show played a similar role in platforming Black performers in the 1950/ 1970s. And made them mainstream entertainment. Giving a voice to marginalised, and underrepresented cultures. BBC

We have many friends who adore Drag Race in all its incarnations. They frequently invite us to performances by various DR contestants, which are seemingly taking place every bloody night of the week. My husband always firmly says, in no uncertain terms, that he considers drag to be misogynistic and is therefore uninterested in watching any drag adjacent performance. I sit there quietly agreeing with him but also silently wishing I had the guts to say what he says. He doesn't say it to start an argument, just expressing his views, and nobody has ever pulled him up on his beliefs, so maybe I should be less timid about speaking out!

People frequently and repeatedly invite you to something your husband has frequently and repeatedly said that he finds offensive? How surreal! And to happen so often.

Lily Savage was a 'character'. A fully formed comedy character. Just like Dame Edna Everidge was.
Barry Humphries and Paul O'Grady were extremely talented comedians. They did not belittle women, they played characters in just the same way as Caroline Aherne did with Mrs Merton, or Prunella Scales with Sybil Fawlty. Steve Coogans' Pauline Calf was absolutely brilliant too. None of these acts were purely about wearing dresses - the costumes were purely the backdrop to fully formed fantastic comedy characters with genius scripts.

Dressing up as parodies of women purely to wab your fake boobs about on stage and constantly talk about your pussy is not talent and it's not protest. It's just shit.

As opposed to a personality either based around dressing up as an offensive sterotype of a woman or demanding on those men's behalf that women not find it offensive?

I've seen more drag shows than I care to remember and I can't remember a single one that was like you describe.

I haven't demanded you not be offended - you are absolutely entitled to be offended. You are not entitled to demand that everyone else be offended - or that people take your offence seriously.

Repeatedly. I am GC - mostly - but it isn't my entire personality. I don't hate trans people. I don't wish them ill. I accept they exist and are entitled to exist in society just as much as everyone else. I won't be browbeaten by people who have forgotten their own decency into crossing my own boundaries of being a decent human being towards everyone.

Weren’t there an attempt to cancel some women who called themselves “transwomen” on only fans as apparently the trans community thought it was offensive to TIM. So if women parodying TIM is offensive, surely men parodying women is more offensive, as women are an oppressed group and men are not?

Actually Lenny Henry did a stint in The Black and White Minstrels. Strange but true!

And that was the joke. It was meant to be hilarious that an actual black man was a minstrel. Because everyone knew that the minstrels were playing at blackface, and it was just a bit of fun to caricature others (sarcasm). Lenny Henry has in later years commented negatively on racism in the arts.
