I think the Black & White Minstrel Show played a similar role in platforming Black performers in the 1950/ 1970s. And made them mainstream entertainment. Giving a voice to marginalised, and underrepresented cultures. BBC

The kind of drag that people are disgusted by, the 'fishy whore' type get up, I truly believe is because these particular men are insanely and obsessively jealous of how naturally and effortlessly sexy and beautiful women are.

They have to tear us down as they can't ever achieve it with their scaffolded fake boobs and bodies, sewn in arses, wigs and caked on makeup. They have to throw in constant putrid jibes about straight women's sexuality to make it clear how much they hate and despise them.

And they all (without exception) look ridiculous - like circus clowns at a strip club.

I see the Graun has a particularly whiny and teeth gnashing article about its cancellation, boiling down to little more than ‘but…but what about the REPRESENTATION?!’. This and any other article in a similar vein are ignoring a few salient points;
Its viewing figures have dropped by a third.
Drag has become very over-exposed.
The over-exposure has had the inevitable effect that drag has become boring (let’s face it, the ballroom style drag schtick is, underneath the wigs and sequins, shallow, samey, and lacking scope for true originality) and it’s slipping out of fashion.

This is interesting news. A new series of Drag Race seems to have started within the last week or so. iPlayer has been aggressive about shoving it in my face, despite me never showing any interest. They did a similar thing with a drag queen comedy a few months ago, and with the godawful Disney Doctor Who. All were given the hard sell on the iPlayer homepage, in quite a desperate way, before flaming out and being cut loose from the BBC stable.

I'm guessing viewership has fallen off a cliff.

Sorry, I can't recall exactly. I went back to read it and be sure I hadn;t imagined it, and it had gone, which confirmed I had been right. It was about methods of payment and excluded some forms - would it have been the cards issued to asylum seekers? Seems unlikely. I was going to photograph it to go away and think. They had a food department. But it seemed odd.
The diner with good breakfasts was much more explicit. Union Jack, and "England, love it or leave it." on display over the counter. It was the memory of that which alerted me at the garden centre. Somone must have had a word.

And back on track on the English, the kind of Morris which includes a Betty seems quite harmless, though I noted an Austrian version which was nasty and scarey, though not in the same way as drag.

..and in one case died whilst sodomising a dog.

It hasn't been cancelled, it is simply moving to the streaming service from the production company.

A lot of moaning, nonsense talk over "fascism", because people don't want to pay £5 a month to watch it.

Not accepting certain payment types is hardly excluding non-Brits.

Believe me, it was something of that sort, I didn't imagine it. There was something they did not like, and it was odd. Big sign several metres tall, large lettering, up on the wall as you walked in, gone the next week

Lots of people here claim they would have supported Lily Savage - but she was a single mum under social services investigation for abusing her criminal kids, pimped them out and regularly used vulgar language and drugs/sex terminology with audiences. She was a hoot! Honestly some of these posts are just naked homophobia. You can believe in the right to single sex spaces and enjoy yourself watching drag acts!

And you can be homosexual and be a bit 🤔🙄😡 at the implication that mad offensive misogyny and sexual behaviour is just all totes a normal part of being gay and everyone should celebrate it. No thanks. Likewise 'celebrity' masterchef, which got to be knee deep in men in drag. Tedious.

The BBC have finally realised that mad overexposure for years and years while ignoring all feedback has caused the exact opposite effect of what they intended.

I can't be the only one wondering why objecting to men (of any sexual orientation or gender identity) being offensive and demeaning to women is framed as 'naked homophobia'.

You're going to have to explain that to me as if I'm 5, I'm afraid.

If Drag Race UK is 'offensive and demeaning to women' then you no doubt have a very low level offence sensors so you shouldn't be too confused.

Hundreds of contestants and two being drag queens is hardly 'knee deep' is it?

Note that the apology for using a hugely offensive term wasn't to women, but to the trans community.

I agree. I know a few drag performers, cabaret type folk, and the artistry of the make-up always impresses me, from the sheer skill point of view, and I agree with @PrancingPanda about Lily Savage/Paul
O’Grady, but a lot of the newer types of drag is deeply misogynist, and parody rather than comedy, mocking and hyper-sexualising women. Grubby, and offensive. The micro-dosing with female hormones, flouncing camp pouting, whilst calling obviously male people ‘she’ just helps to embolden TRAs.

I’m happy to see it fading from mainstream.

As I posted up thread, if straight men were for comedic value, to have a show where they were dedicated every week to portraying gay males as simpering, pouting, petulant, limp wristed and rampantly promiscuous, it would quite rightly be considered at the least bad taste and quite rightly, reinforcing a harmful stereotype.

But it seems acceptable to portray womanhood with grossly exaggerated makeup and body features, dressed in fetishised clothing and shoes looking as though they have stepped out of a bad porno movie, with names such as Penny Tration, Detox ICunt and Sharon Needles. It’s quite simply a caricature that reinforces harmful patriarchal ideas of what a woman is.

Lily Savage was more acceptable because the character was clearly a bloke in a dress and the humour was more about the supposed lifestyle “she” lived, rather than a competition to out sexualise other contestants. Paul O’Grady wasn’t trying to compete with real women and recognised when Lily had run the course rather then getting more and more excessive, and so “she” was retired.
