I think the Black & White Minstrel Show played a similar role in platforming Black performers in the 1950/ 1970s. And made them mainstream entertainment. Giving a voice to marginalised, and underrepresented cultures. BBC

Once it may have been a bit daring to have drag queens on the telly. It's now become about as edgy as soggy pan bread, and less funny.

And after it lost the edge, and since it stopped being funny, what was left was just men mocking women with cheap, vindictive digs.

It's a protest against all the systemic power women enjoy over men. I see.

It has probably just run its course. I doubt it’s due to a tide of dawning realisation. But good riddance all the same.

I’m sure a lot of men do enjoy dressing up as women to mock them - how the hell that’s any kind of role model for adolescents who are starting to wonder if they’re gay I have no idea.

Don’t know if you’ve noticed but women have also been raped and murdered a fair bit over the years.

Drag hates women even if it doesn’t know it

I remember going to the local, rural, gay pub in my late teens and they had a drag act on. He performed a sex act on a very vulnerable local lad for whom it was quite obviously his first sexual encounter. The drag queen thought it was funny. It really wasn't. I think most of us in the pub thought that 'performance' was abusive.

Clearly drag exploits women, but I also think it empowers a certain type of man to ignore boundaries and that is bad for everyone.

It objectifies women, but women who object are brushed aside as spoiling the fun. It isn’t done by people with any real respect for women.

I’ve seen today just how many female impersonators really don’t like women, or respect their views and right to dislike drag. It seems if you express an opinion you are, “an ugly, dried up old harridan” or automatically homophobic.

There's always the 'ooh, it's not mocking women, it's a tribute/for 'feminine men'/all a bit of fun, you joyless harridans!!!' while the terminology includes the hideously misogynistic term 'fishy'.

At it's core, it's men punching down on women.

It is a form of mockery, which like all mockery can be funny if done well (Lilly , dame edna- both men were funny out of drag) but falls incredibly flat if done by a talentless, crude, lipsyncing oaf (the vast majority of drag queens ).also the sheer monotony of them, appearing in everything....

I doubt the decision was made on moral grounds - it will be that they can't afford it. Fewer and fewer people are paying for TV licences - the BBC is in a financial mess.

Hopefully it is an indication of the world continuing to move into the post-woke era.

Note the “hilarious” witticism of using the words “pussy” and “snatch” in their pathetic contests. Both vulgar words for female genitalia. That, apparently is celebrating womanhood and tradition.

Nope, a protest at the criminalisation of being gay, and the relentless, violent, ignorant targeting of queer communities which continues today. A fuck-you stand against the orderly daughters, often.

Drag is a celebration and protest.

It's not a celebration of sexual violence. And as if I haven't noticed sexual violence, when I and all of my friends - every woman I've ever met, in fact - have been sexually assaulted. I'm a childhood violence survivor too.

Young gay men know who they are. They aren't 'confused' and have plenty of positive role models - teachers, parents and people in all professions. How they choose to express their sexuality is up to them. Watching a drag queen is going to be for all of them - but it won't harm them.

And again, my main point was how racist it is to compare drag to minstrelsy. Gay men having fun with gender isn't what's oppressing women - it's rape culture, the destruction of our services, and creeping fascism.

No drag queen ever advocated removing my reproductive rights, defended violence against women, or defined me by my genitals. That's Reform.

Exactly. Men mocking women by parodying them is disgusting. Love the way people try to defend it by saying it’s only a laugh and light hearted. When has punching down on an oppressed group ever been ok? Referring to women as “fish”, using crude and disgusting names like “Ana abortion”. I’d love to see defenders of drag explain why mocking and parodying women (an oppressed group we can all agree) by wearing womanface is fine, but wearing blackface to mock and parody people of colour (another very oppressed group) is wrong, racist and reprehensible.

Not a problem - never watched it

I have - very deliberately - never watched it.

But it still, for years, has come up as the landing suggestion when I turn on IPlayer. It has been in the 'trending' and 'suggested for you' pages over and over again. Despite me never having clicked on it or anything remotely like it.

It has felt very very pushed. Very very insisted upon.

I am so glad that that will now change.

Drag is one of those things that will be looked back on in years to come with people saying "What was that all about? How did we not see it?"

And kids who were taken to Drag Queen Story Time sessions will wonder what on earth their parents were thinking.
