The Proclaimers... another reason to love them

Sunshine on Leith makes me cry every single time, but who would have thought that they would come out swinging for women's rights?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/efa9ba470db8e0cd

The interview is very punchy, and well worth a read.

'That, though, wasn’t the primary reason that, in May’s Scottish parliamentary elections, Craig didn’t vote SNP for the first time since 1983. That reason was “the anger that I still feel that they passed a self ID bill which was so badly [formulated]”. He’s talking about the 2022 Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill that makes it easier for individuals to change their legal gender. “It’s so badly done that it inevitably led to violent men, including convicted rapists, being sent to women’s prison. For me, that is unforgivable.”'

I'm going to stream the new album as soon as I can. And, as a side note I think they are one of the best bands I've seen.

The Proclaimers: The trans lobby are truth-phobic

Ahead of a provocative new album, Craig and Charlie Reid on their anger at the SNP, Western warmongering and the imperilment of free speech

It's an interview with the Proclaimers, in which they make coherent political points, punctuated by snatches of their music. And then after an extract which goes

We talk of barbarism
Like we left it in the past
While we elect malignant scoundrels
Each one as bad as the last

Evan Davies' comment is, "Again, highly political, almost kind of comically unsubtle [tinkly laugh]."

Did he mean to be quite so insulting or is he always like this with his guests?

The answer he was given, btw: "I think that's called honesty".

He is always like that. Not only is he a TRA but he is a twat (idiot).

I once wrote a complaint about how he sniggered his way through quite a sensitive issue report, and he was making the BBC look unprofessional.

They rejected by complaint saying it was an opinion!

I really like that bit about anti-woke and left wing. It’s just so refreshing to hear celebrities say such a thing. Especially when those celebrities are well known as being socialist/left wing. I feel like I’ve been waiting for someone to say it publicly for such a long time. In real life, if I say I’m left wing but I see problems with ‘woke’ ideologies, people very often don’t seem to get it and just assume I’m lying about being a leftie.

Same . Cast my first vote for an old Communist Party candidate years ago. Don't think I've changed a whole lot. Whereas a lot of young woke types don't seem to know much about socialism , or care for that matter. Their politics come in a bundle , largely unexamined. Off the peg so to speak. It's a bit depressing really. Gwan Craig and Charlie!

YourWiseBee · 09/09/2026 21:57

Love the Proclaimers and they have always been political.

one of my favourite (although not as well known) songs is Cap in Hand. It just really describes Scotland at the time. I’m not even a Nationalist but that one gets me going every time.

Evan's twinkly laugh and sniggers are a total give away to how impartial he isn't on any given subject. The more his voice catches the worse it is.

those f---ing bairns

It’s going to be very hard to watch the original film series without thinking of this now.

Ractify · 09/09/2026 22:16

Absolutely brilliant - truthphobic is exactly right. Whenever the accusation of “transphobia” is hurled, the counter of “truthphobia” is the perfect retort.

Thedogscollar · 09/09/2026 22:21

Been a fan from the start. Used to live not far from them when they started their career.
Outstanding musicians and singer songwriters. Been to many of their concerts.
Agree 100% with their stance on this.
"Those fucking bairns" indeed.

So glad a left wing band have said this. So deeply disappointed by my old faves like Jimmy Somerville et al. Yes , Hibs have the best song now , eat yer hearts out Liverpool, Celtic whoever.
Truth- phobic is a brilliant coinage !

Here you

JacknDiane · 09/09/2026 22:32

So many sensible Scottish voices here.
Can I recommend a watch of "The Cheviot, The Stag and The Black Black Oil". Its brilliant.
As are The Proclaimers.

As you were.

likelysuspect · 09/09/2026 22:37

Thats good, but they'll probably be 'cancelled'

Maaate · 09/09/2026 22:39

So, in "On My Way" do you go 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 with the 'uh-huh's'? 🤣

OnTheBoardwalk · 09/09/2026 22:42

I love the Proclaimers but wouldn’t have purchased their new album but will now, thanks for the thread

off topic but if you’ve seen them live recently check out Erica their fabulous fiddle player https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erica_Nockalls

Oh they are losing their shit over on BlueHair.

THAT'S IT I'M TAKING THE PROCLAIMERS OFF ALL MY PLAYLISTS!!!!1!1!1!11!!! 😡😡😡

Sure they were on there to begin with, Chlamydia-Rose.

I laughed so loud at this I woke the toddler up 🙄

But thank you (all soothed back to sleep now)

Mollyollydolly · 10/09/2026 00:09

I had a quick look on Bluesky .. it's amazing seeing Dorian Lynsky posting about them with such disappointment. These once seemingly intelligent people are totally infantilised by this crap. Yet we're the ones who've been radicalised.. yeah right.

NameyMcNew · 10/09/2026 00:49

Their new single “You May Offend” ❤️

As you breathe
As you grow
As you ascend
You'll lose count of the fools, you may offend
Just by giving out the thoughts in your head
You may reach a point where some will wish you dead
Speech is free, so are we
I am assured
But too much rational thought
Needs to be cured
So suppress the fact that you prey upon your mind
For the greater good of always being kind
That old street called tolerance
Runs both ways, or makes no sense
As you breathe
As you grow
As you ascend
You'll lose count of the fools, you may offend
Just by giving out the thoughts in your head
You may reach a point where someone will wish you dead

Absolutely this. Their heads have been filled with this rubbish, which is about as far removed from socialism as you could imagine. Any real socialists would be saying, why the hell aren't the trades unions supporting Sandie Peggy and the Darlington nurses and Jennifer Melle. And voices of sanity from anyone in the music industry are surely very welcome.

ETA: grammar.

WearyAuldWumman · 10/09/2026 01:41

I'm not surprised. They're Fifers: they know what's being going on here: Upton, Green, Scott, Dolatowski.

AlexandraLeaving · 10/09/2026 05:32

This Is The Story that has what it takes to Make My Heart Fly. So pleased Craig and Charlie are prepared to speak the Beautiful Truth and hope at last the myth that reality is a far-right preserve is finally Over And Done With.

Pink Leggings no more.

It’s fab, isn’t it?!

Looking at the album list, I have high hopes for The Grooming when it is released tomorrow. Of course it may be about something else altogether.

RoyalCorgi · 10/09/2026 08:06

Two thoughts

  1. AMAZING. I love the fact that they're so forthright and don't mince their words. Really direct and uncompromising.
  2. What took you so long, lads? It's 2026 and some of us have been in the trenches of this war for nearly 10 years. We could really have used your support earlier.
Waitingfordoggo · 10/09/2026 08:40

1 and 3 for me @Maaate

ohoho don't let the C&C Music Factory hear you say that. They consider themselves Leithers (somehow). They have had so many quotable lyrics but here's one about their time in the Kingdom.

From "Everybody's a Victim" off Persevere

"You've got to put my parents in jail for raising me in Fife"

BezMark · 10/09/2026 11:54

I'm going to work through my catalogue, I have

This is the Story
Sunshine on Leith
Hit the Highway
Persevere
Born Innocent
Restless Soul
Life With You
Dentures Out
Let's Hear it for the Dogs

Looks like I'm missing
Angry Cyclist
Like Comedy
and the forthcoming
You May Offend

The first wife of one of the chaps (subject of the love songs on Sunshine on Leith and the breakup songs on Hit the Highway) was my first girlfriend's cousin. So they're basically family.

Yikes, I only have the first 2, on vinyl, clearly I need to Do Something 😬
Oh no, I have Sunshine on Leith on CD.

Mind you decades later I can still listen to those 2 over and over, I love the way they sing so closely and effortlessly together, and that they provide harmonies that are in my range when the tune isn't and I can belt out happily!
