The Proclaimers... another reason to love them

Sunshine on Leith makes me cry every single time, but who would have thought that they would come out swinging for women's rights?

The interview is very punchy, and well worth a read.

'That, though, wasn’t the primary reason that, in May’s Scottish parliamentary elections, Craig didn’t vote SNP for the first time since 1983. That reason was “the anger that I still feel that they passed a self ID bill which was so badly [formulated]”. He’s talking about the 2022 Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill that makes it easier for individuals to change their legal gender. “It’s so badly done that it inevitably led to violent men, including convicted rapists, being sent to women’s prison. For me, that is unforgivable.”'

I'm going to stream the new album as soon as I can. And, as a side note I think they are one of the best bands I've seen.

The Proclaimers: The trans lobby are truth-phobic

Ahead of a provocative new album, Craig and Charlie Reid on their anger at the SNP, Western warmongering and the imperilment of free speech

Sorry, I just had to add this belter of a quote:

On Radcliffe, Watson and Grint: “those f---ing bairns who Rowling made massive fortunes [for]… It was not necessary that each of them stood up and agreed with her. But you would have thought someone would stand up and say, ‘We live in a free country. Thank goodness we have freedom of speech. She is exercising her right to a point of view. I do not necessarily support it. But I support her right to say something.’ I don’t remember any of them saying anything [like that].”

Couldn’t love them more. Well done lads

MoistVonL · 09/09/2026 13:51

Well said, lads.

Apollo441 · 09/09/2026 13:52

I saw them in July at Guilfest. The were fabulous. Didn't think I could love them more!

SirChenjins · 09/09/2026 13:56

Well done them - but how fucking ridiculous is it that we need to congratulate people (esp men) in the public eye for standing up for the rights of women and girls and stating the absolute bleeding obvious about TIMs?

worrisomeasset · 09/09/2026 14:09

It’s clear from the rest of the interview that they are very, very left-wing. It’s crazy that TWAW has become part of left-wing orthodoxy, and they deserve congratulations for putting their heads above the parapet on this issue.

A great quote from Craig:
“I’m not transphobic. I’m not against a man identifying as a woman, dressing as a woman. I’m not against any of that. All I’m against is saying that he actually is a woman when he’s not a woman. A lot of these folk are basically truth-phobic. They’ll deny the biological reality. Then if you insist on it, they’ll say that you are hurting their feelings. That you’re disrespecting them. But I respect reality and scientific fact, not myth.”

Trans Reddit will have a meltdown.

Beautiful!

Icedvanillacoffee · 09/09/2026 14:21

I totally agree with him about Radcliffe Watson and Grint. They still make a lot of money from the films and any and all merch with their images. So not only did they not return any of the money they continue to take it despite everything they have said.

HannahinHampshire · 09/09/2026 14:32

Came on to post this but beaten to it! Always loved the Proclaimers, even more so now.

weegielass01 · 09/09/2026 14:33

david tennant will be fizzing, doesn't he adore the proclaimers? At least we'll be spared him badly singing 500 miles at every opportunity now.

Lottapianos · 09/09/2026 14:37

Marvellous work, boys. Absolutely love to see it ❤️

'those fucking bairns' 😁

I get very emotional at Sunshine on Leith too, it's such a beauty

CrossPurposes · 09/09/2026 14:41

Wow. So forthright.

guinnessguzzler · 09/09/2026 14:41

Fabulous. Another big fan here so delighted to see this. And these are great quotes, I think very nicely articulated and captures well what a lot of people have been made to feel they can't say.

LizzieSiddal · 09/09/2026 14:47

I absolutely love them and have seen them live many times. I’m bloody glad to read this. Just plain common sense. ❤️

Beowulfa · 09/09/2026 14:51

So refreshing to hear an old school working class left wing voice call out utter bollocks.

500 Miles came on in a pub when I was in Leith last year, local bloke next to me complained but I was delighted.

Yamyamabroad · 09/09/2026 14:53

Good for them. Another one with a very soft spot for Sunshine on Leith - even when I see the Hibs fans singing it and I have no allegiance to their team or Scottish football at all. Worth watching on You Tube for a strangely moving 3 minutes.

IrnBruAndDietCoke · 09/09/2026 14:54

Yasssssss. So happy to read this! Sunshine on Leith is one of my favourite albums

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/09/2026 15:00

Poor old David Tenant. Sunshine on Leith is his favourite song. What's he going to do now???

I gather Tennant isn't on Insta, Bluehair or the Twix, so we can't watch him combust on social media.

I hear that his wife is on Insta and Bluehair, though. I wonder whether she'll have anything to say.

Taztoy · 09/09/2026 15:04

Nice one.

I doubt much of trans Reddit will have a clue who they are. Most of them seem to be about 15 years old.

Davros · 09/09/2026 15:18

I love them even more now. Sunshine on Leith brings a tear to my eye too and I’m not even a Hibs supporter 😢
“while I’m worth, my room on this earth” marvellous line

Yes, great to hear that. I've seen them twice, once many years ago and once more recently, both brilliant.

They've done what so many people seem totally capable of doing: they've unpacked the big bag of 'progressive' ideas and found that some are good and worth keeping and some are complete b×llocks and should be ditched at the first opportunity.

Mmmnotsure · 09/09/2026 15:22

An article about their music and politics - and the subject given most room is women's rights. Good men.

Snapespeare · 09/09/2026 15:28

As a very slight tangent for the Sunshine on Leith fans - there is the most beautiful programme on R4 that explores peoples appreciation of this incredible song. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000q9f5 I'm leftwing and gendercrit and its so refreshing to decouple from the lazy assertion that we're all MAGA-loving fash. Thanks Craig and Charlie.
