The Proclaimers... another reason to love them

Sunshine on Leith makes me cry every single time, but who would have thought that they would come out swinging for women's rights?

The interview is very punchy, and well worth a read.

'That, though, wasn’t the primary reason that, in May’s Scottish parliamentary elections, Craig didn’t vote SNP for the first time since 1983. That reason was “the anger that I still feel that they passed a self ID bill which was so badly [formulated]”. He’s talking about the 2022 Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill that makes it easier for individuals to change their legal gender. “It’s so badly done that it inevitably led to violent men, including convicted rapists, being sent to women’s prison. For me, that is unforgivable.”'

I'm going to stream the new album as soon as I can. And, as a side note I think they are one of the best bands I've seen.

The Proclaimers: The trans lobby are truth-phobic

Ahead of a provocative new album, Craig and Charlie Reid on their anger at the SNP, Western warmongering and the imperilment of free speech

I fancy ‘After you’ve gone’ for my funeral. Hopefully not for many years!

I totally agree with him about Radcliffe Watson and Grint. They still make a lot of money from the films and any and all merch with their images. So not only did they not return any of the money they continue to take it despite everything they have said.

I guess I never really thought about the fact that the actors still profit from the films. Funny how the trans lobby doesn’t come after them for that. They get away with slating JKR while simultaneously continuing to profit from her work 🤔

I saw this article just now on FB. It wasn’t on my bingo card but I’m delighted to see it. Love The Proclaimers even more now. I’m another one who’s seen them live and it was genuinely one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to! They’re brilliant.

Agreed letter from America is going to be one of my funeral songs x

I've got 'There's' (from the album, Like Comedy) planned for my hubby's (hopefully not imminent). It ends with the lines, 'There's you walking down the street, children running round your feet, there's you, and there's me'. Absolutely beautiful, gets me every time.

Love them and I’m so glad they’ve said this.

Sunshine on Leith is one of my favourite songs and genuinely helped me to get through my divorce. There was something vastly therapeutic about sitting in the car letting myself sing/admit ‘my heart is broken’ then dusting myself and getting on with the rest of my day.

Thanks lads.

Aw and I thought I couldn’t love them any more 😍
thanks for sharing.

soupycustard · 09/09/2026 19:01

Love them even more. They have always been unashamedly themselves. Glasses, 'uncool' clothes and hair, playing the music that they wanted to play. And I always loved that that worked for them. How bloody fab they are.

AliceinNumberland · 09/09/2026 19:01

The Radio 4 interview just before 6pm, with Evan Davies, was very good too. The questions tiptoed around this rather than tackled it head on, but the Proclaimers were clear that they were pro independence but thought the SNP had gone off piste and shot itself in the foot. And also Evan’s asked something along the lines of ‘isn’t anti-woke rather a right wing position’ and they came straight back and said ‘we are left wing (as in redistribution of wealth) but not omnicause (they didn’t use that word, but they basically said ‘left’ had become a shorthand for a lot of things that aren’t left at all).

GreenShady · 09/09/2026 19:05

Oh my goodness, I love them 😍

There was always a real independence to their music, not easily pigeon holes, same to their political views

DizzyWhoreEighteenHundredAndFour · 09/09/2026 20:20

Oh they are losing their shit over on BlueHair.

THAT'S IT I'M TAKING THE PROCLAIMERS OFF ALL MY PLAYLISTS!!!!1!1!1!11!!! 😡😡😡

Sure they were on there to begin with, Chlamydia-Rose.

Mmmnotsure · 09/09/2026 20:23

It's an interview with the Proclaimers, in which they make coherent political points, punctuated by snatches of their music. And then after an extract which goes

We talk of barbarism
Like we left it in the past
While we elect malignant scoundrels
Each one as bad as the last

Evan Davies' comment is, "Again, highly political, almost kind of comically unsubtle [tinkly laugh]."

Did he mean to be quite so insulting or is he always like this with his guests?

The answer he was given, btw: "I think that's called honesty".

Mollyollydolly · 09/09/2026 20:41

Poor David Tennant - his leaving video when he left Doctor Who is the cast and crew singing '500 miles'' .. it's on YouTube, very entertaining. Good lads, well just sensible.

Thanks for sharing. It's refreshing not just seeing them express these views so openly and without fear but also being so clear about being able to disagree with someone on one issue whilst agreeing with them on another. That's something many people seem to be losing the ability to do, and not just on this issue. Agree wholeheartedly about the left losing their collective mind, and I would count myself as a lifelong socialist too.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/09/2026 20:49

Wonder how this has gone down with Working Class Hero™️ Billy Bragg.

This 💯

Absolutely delighted to see this from them and finally some common sense from some Lefty men

I’m going to see the Proclaimers in Portsmouth in November 🙂

and seeing Squeeze at the same venue in December 🙂

Squeeze are supported by Billy Bragg . . . 🙁

Hopefully like a bucket of cold (insert revolting substance HERE).
If we are very lucky it might render him completely speechless for about half a minute.

Mcdhotchoc · 09/09/2026 21:18

I have long adored them.
I listen to "In Recognition" whenever the New Years Honours are announced.
Also "Shadows Fall" has to be one of the finest songs ever written.

I really like that bit about anti-woke and left wing. It’s just so refreshing to hear celebrities say such a thing. Especially when those celebrities are well known as being socialist/left wing. I feel like I’ve been waiting for someone to say it publicly for such a long time. In real life, if I say I’m left wing but I see problems with ‘woke’ ideologies, people very often don’t seem to get it and just assume I’m lying about being a leftie.

Yes! There's such an enormous sense of relief when people point out the obvious like this. I'm left wing AND I give a shit about women. I'm gender critical AND I think anyone can wear any clothes/hair/makeup they like.

david tennant will be fizzing, doesn't he adore the proclaimers? At least we'll be spared him badly singing 500 miles at every opportunity now.

Exactly what I thought when I started to read this
