In which Amnesty jumps the shark

A report on 'anti gender actors' from Amnesty appears to be a puzzling work of jumbled nonsense and overwrought fiction.

Either they completely fail to grasp what 'gender critical' means, or they are deliberately trying desperately to bundle it in with Xtian rightwing US organisations. Maybe both.

Trans activists have been accusing UK feminists of being rightwing Xtian US fundamentalist funded for years. Sometimes it's funny, more often it's just fucking tedious.

Anyway.

'An organised anti-rights movement targeting the rights of women and LGBT+ people is growing in the UK. Over 60% of the organisations mapped have emerged since 2017, the vast majority gender critical organisations'

What the everloving fuck do they think they mean, here?

Feminists 'target' the rights of women? In terms of - feminists have fought long and hard for the rights of women? Yes, well done, Amnesty.

Then they whang on a lot about abortion and well funded US rightwing organisations, including religious groups, etc.

And then ...

'In fact, gender critical organisations only account for 2.5% of total expenditure but have been remarkably successful in realising their agenda through strategic litigation and campaigning.'

Will you ever actually use your brains, Amnesty?

The list at the end should give them a wee clue. Dozens of feminist organisations, almost all listed as 'informal', yet lumped in bizarrely with massive US anti abortion groups.

Idiots.

Is it me, or does that apology fall a little short?

It's lacks credibility. Once an institution is captured it has a long way to go to get back and this is the babiest of baby steps.

They need to publish the whole of the document trails that led to this. Should these not be available, it will undermine their commitment to honesty and if they are I suspect they will have to let some people go (at the top.).

Let's hope Sex Matters are going to push them hard on transparency and making their reputations whole.

I am of the opinion that any out of court settlement should include all those named and make monetary and broadly publicised restitution to them for reputational damage. As JKR has pointed out, the real damage is that users of these services/charities may have been intimidated or confused into feeling they cannot seek help.

Trans UK Reddit:

Amnesty have entirely capitulated to the billionaire backed GC movement. Any trans person or ally who contributes to them either with time or money should consider if their resources would be better served elsewhere.

I think this now shows they’re only paying lip service to trans rights. You can do whatever you want with your money, but personally I don’t think it’s worth supporting an organisation that will not stand up for our rights.

but does that mean we're to boycott entirely?
Yes. They surrendered, therefore if you want to donate to someone who will fight for us they have removed themselves from that list.

There are some arguing that they should be given slack but the TRAs are Not Happy.

Edited

Are there are whole slew of transpersons who are prisoners of conscience?

Amnesty's intention was to represent the voiceless victims of oppressive regimes. Sheesh. What a sorry state of affairs it is.

WomanInnaWoods · 31/07/2026 12:43

"...we recognise the concerns raised by those labelled as “anti-rights” in the document."

"...which we should not have collectively labelled as anti-rights."

TRA1:
If as an organisation, AI will stand up to brutal dictators and despots, it shouldn’t be too much of an ask to stand up to the terf movement. If they can’t do that when they receive pushback, then we can’t trust that anything we contribute in the future will be utilised appropriately.

TRA2:
I'm fairly sure the reason is that the dictators and despots have no real way of striking back. Amnesty can research and report and campaign against despots in most of the world without their own HQ being targeted - but said HQ is in the UK, where Rowling can marshall her legal forces and sue them into the void.

Significantly they have also taken down the earlier briefing entitled Like A Snowball that covered te same ground. Presumably Chiara Capraro will also be told not to shoot her mouth off on any more podcasts.

They have also said that they will commission an independent external review to "learn from this moment". This could be significant but it depends who they commission to produce the report & the terms of reference.

Edited

Hopefully we’ll all get to read it.

Fridayyesterday · 31/07/2026 13:12

We have also taken down an earlier more discursive briefing (entitled Like A Snowball) which also referenced a wide range of organisations.

This is in the same paragraph as the limited apology, but I note that it contains no apology for what was said in “Like a Snowball”.

WomanInnaWoods · 31/07/2026 13:22

Anybody like to read what AIUK sent to their activists?

Such as an apology for women pulling the report? (Image attached)

SecretSquirrelLoo · 31/07/2026 13:24

So they’re heading to court then. More fool them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/07/2026 13:25

TBH that’s less shit than I thought it would be. It’s more of an apology for “disappointment” they feel. I doubt it will go down well with the gender identity fans who are activists.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/07/2026 13:26

I think they know they have put themselves in a position they can’t really row back from now.

They’ll be even angrier than they are already. I notice AI say the report wasn’t ‘actively’ promoted - does that mean they’re not counting Chiara Capraro’s promotions?

Datun · 31/07/2026 13:34

We know that this will be disappointing, frustrating and upsetting for our supporters, members and activists and for this, too, we apologise without reservation.

Eh??

What is disappointing? That they pulled the report? That they are committed to rights for everybody (apparently)?

am I missing something?

lechiffre55 · 31/07/2026 13:35

I don't think people in this thread are reading the statement carefully.

"This document should never have been published, and full responsibility for this error rests with Amnesty International UK." - puts distance between AI and AIUK. People think of them as one thing, but here effort is being put into putting distance between parts. Perhaps AI worried that they could be sued as the parent organisation? AI trying to ring fence their money from legal peril?

"To be clear: this labelling does not represent our institutional position" - hugely important. If it was to be AI's or AIUK's institutional position, that brings massive legal risk. If this was policy that got signed off by a/the board it would open up huge risk. Not just legal and financial, but say the Charity Commission got involved and it was found to be institutional policy, they could possibly lose their charity status? Can you imagine?

"In particular, we apologise to Beira’s Place and other groups, which we categorised as gender critical organisations, which we should not have collectively labelled as anti-rights." - a very direct attempt to placate JKR. Mentioning Beira's place specifically is a very big deal. They are VERY afraid of where this could go. This is a big attempt to placate JKR. They also want JKR to know this "public" statement is addressed to her directly.

"AIUK holds itself to the highest standards of research, evidence and editorial oversight in all its publications. We have concluded that this briefing fell significantly short of those standards. We will commission an independent external review to learn from this moment." This is almost funny. They try to setup the reason why they are commissioning an independent enquiry out of the goodness of their hearts, not JKR's legal actions, but also at the same time "we are doing what you asked JKR". This is trying to play both sides of the coin at the same time. They are very worried.

This is not your bog standard non apology. This is an organisation that knows they are in a huge amount of trouble. Knows JKR has a history of not backing down, and she also has the resources to back it up. There is a long history of JKR's involvements, even if not direct, that prove her bite is even more terrible than her bark. They know JKR does not make idle threats.

This is not a non apology, this is a surrender. It may be couched in corpo speak, but it is a mea culpa. AI/AIUK suing for peace least they get sued for real. Read it carefully and I see an organisation in total panic. Internally I cannot imagine how much of a shit show of finger pointing, blame gaming, and headless chickening is going on at AI and AIUK right now. I wish we could watch.

MarieDeGournay · 31/07/2026 13:36

There's an apology, and then an apology - well, apologia to be fair - for the apology, in an attempt to head off the angry reaction they are getting from transpeople on Reddit for selling them out.

I think the most contentious bit of the apology for the apology letter to supporters is the statement that the 'fundamental human rights' of trans people are under attack, as is their very existence.

Trans people, incl in the UK already have all the human rights they are entitled to, including protection under equality legislation.

I'd like to see AI being challenged to justify claiming the opposite - and spending time and money on activities fighting for rights that transpeople already have.

Exactly. Are they implying she did that outside being a representative of AIUK?

But yes, having parsed it a few more times, what exactly do they have to be “disappointed” about?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/07/2026 13:41

Or frustrated, or upset?

Datun · 31/07/2026 13:51

Right on the heels of patting themselves on the back for how fair they reeely are, they're telling everybody how disappointed they know they'll be.

WomanInnaWoods · 31/07/2026 13:58

The report was so unpromoted it made it into Amnesty's Pride Month 2026 Parliamentary Briefing.

Perhaps you would you allow me to translate?
"We know you TRA lunatics can be vicious and violent. Please don't come after us because we caved and gave up the sacred idol."

That's the problem with getting into bed with these weirdos, they are unhinged lunatic, bunny boilers. Displease them even once, and now you have to feign sleep with both eyes open worrying about what crazy thing they are going to do next.
I personally look forwards to watching the TRA brigade venting their displeasure and "protesting" AI and AIUK's HQ in London. You AI guys are gonna need more mops to deal with all the hormone enhanced protest piss you're about to be drowned in.
