My dad’s getting good results with peanuts if that helps. Sparrows, magpies, robins, pigeons & starlings but also goldfinches & a woodpecker who’s becoming a regular.

My understanding is that peanuts should also be off the menu until October, unfortunately. Places like the RSPB and WWT aren’t selling seeds and nuts at the moment, just suet products and mealworms.

Thank you all for your praise for my words. It is AI, not I.

Gosie’s adventures are much more mine than AI’s, but I always have help.

Nearly one third of MSPs and staff claim not to know what toilets they should use now (DM article, archived)

MN thread: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5546698-nearly-one-third-of-msps-and-staff-dont-know-which-toilet-to-use-at-hollyrood

I used to wonder how Salem happened. Now that it's clear that a third of the population consists of suggestible idiots, I can see how it came about.

The knockout phase had begun, and Gerbil World Cup HQ was, for the first time since the mudslide incident, operating at full administrative capacity.

Griselda had produced a bracket. It was laminated.

The bracket had required three attempts to get right, because the Hanseatic League presented certain structural complications — specifically, that they were not a team, had never been a team, and their participation in the tournament had been approved during a period that Griselda described as “the early administrative phase,” by which she meant before anyone had looked too carefully at the entry forms. They were through to the knockout stage regardless. The bracket had a box for them. The box was slightly larger than the other boxes, for reasons that Griselda declined to explain.

Gwendoline had issued a communications bulletin describing the field as “historically diverse” and “a testament to the breadth of the gerbil game.” She had not mentioned the Hanseatic League by name in the bulletin. She had mentioned them four times in the footnotes.

Gertrude had scaled up seed procurement accordingly. Knockout football meant longer matches, potentially extra time, potentially penalties, and Gertrude had prepared for all contingencies. The seed store had not looked like this since the inaugural tournament. She was extremely pleased.

Glory the mascot had been brought out of storage and was in excellent condition except for one ear, which was now a slightly different shade of yellow and which everyone had agreed, formally and in writing, not to mention.

Tunnel were through. Scotland were through. England were through, which the Department was processing with calibrated awareness. The Hanseatic League were through, in whatever sense that meant anything.

Greta had updated the bracket with the first round of knockout fixtures. Most of the other boxes were empty, because the matches had not been played, which was the correct reason for a box to be empty.

Some of them had been filled in anyway. Griselda had looked at these for a long moment and had decided not to ask.

Ah. I’ll pass that on, thanks @ErrolTheDragon.

The rest of the bedding is on the line, I checked we had the right herbs in for tonights maftoul and I put the salted yoghurt to drain for th labneh.

That brief burst of productivity sent me back to the hammock in the shade for another hour or two. There's a nice gentle breeze down the bottom of the garden.

The Capybaras have been very happy today, occasionally breaking into a chant of 'Three nil, three nil.....'😃

There’s quite a breeze here too. It turns out that the garden table we got this year to replace one that broke after long service isn’t heavy/large enough for the parasol. We need to get one of those water or sand filled bases I guess, but I’m wondering if I can improvise.

AsWithGlad · 25/06/2026 15:38

I have just come back from an hour at work, which I wasn’t expecting to do. Edwardian building. It was hot.

Out again tonight, that’s three evenings out of four: I can’t remember when I last did that. Still, home by 10:30pm or soon after and nothing I have do for weeks, apart from enjoying reading stories of true accounts of gerbil exploits.

On the bird life, rooks may at least be doing some real communications. Woodpigeons otoh really are repetitive. And they got worse for me when I started to ‘hear’ their calls as an annoying moany phrase. I am not going to tell you what this is because if I do you’ll likely be cursed with forever hearing it too and hate me. If anyone hears pigeons as saying something nice and cheerful please let me know!

My gran always said that woodpigeons say "Tak' two coos Jackie; tak' two coos."
(As in, answering the question: "How many cows should I take?")

One of the minor Springwatch contributors says it's 'I'm BOR-ing, I know"

The chiff chaffs around here mostly have a three beat call, which reminds me of a complaining teen saying he'd already done to an acceptable level whatever you're telling them to do:
I DID it, I DID it

Errol, I use two decorative cement blacks on top if each other, then stick the parasol bottom into one of the petals.

I strayed beyond this board - very unusually - yesterday because the word 'Sussex' caught my eye in Trending and I thought it was about Sussex Uni.

It wasn't, it was about conspiracy theories about ' The Sussexes' [East and West? No, Megan and Harry]- that their children are not real.🙄

I was delighted to see that the Spirit of Bluestocking is abroad on other threads:
somebody said that not only are the Sussex children not real, but' neither is Finland.'
'Or birds.'
'Birds aren't real?? so what are they then?'
'Probably some kind of government listening devices...'
'Oh yeah? well the government had better get over here and clean my windscreen!'
😂😂😂
Of course it may have been Bluestockingers On Tour Under Different Usernames, but whoever it was, it made me laugh - wonderful use of surreal humour to puncture daft conspiracy theories, and it was nice to see it flourishing outside the walls of the Bluey.

edited to add that Magpie will be pleased to hear that another poster confirmed that birds ARE 'some kind of government listening devices'
'Apparently the magpies are in charge..'🙂

Edited

Well, duh... Of course the magpies are in charge!

Thanks for the woodpigeon translation services. Incidentally, their courting behaviour described upthread often as not culminates with a, um, David Attenborough moment on top of my arbour.

The local collared doves seem to be inspired to feats of amorous endeavour by and on satellite dishes. Which is quite tricky, one would think.

The wood pigeons in fact are narrating a historic argument between 2 elderly ladies about a pair of shoes.

They’re MY shoes Betty
They’re MY SHOES Betty
THEY’RE MY SHOES BETTY

Oh I am DONE with this heatwave! 33C upstairs, and even the good breeze feels like an oven. And the "cool" side of the house is around 27C. Can't wait for the sun to set. Slightly upgraded to 25C for tomorrow. I think sleeping tonight might be very difficult. Will the sleep gerbils be around? (I have chocolate ice cream, ice cubes, and a giant fan)

Ooh yes please! And I'll share my ice cream if I can have a Magnum bonbon - I didn't even know they made them. On the list! I am lying on the sofa bed in front of the giant fan, feeling very sorry for myself. I'm not moving again until the sun goes down (except to get more ice)

I can't hang around for long at a time in the Bluestocking this evening because my phone keeps overheating and shutting down (it's an oldish iPhone).

I hope everyone is managing ok today!
I'll be back!

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/06/2026 19:28

I didn’t know either, I found them by accident in Asda!

Kitty won’t be joining us, she’s busy melting.
