Dundee girl with axe verdict- Ilia Belov found guilty of assault and injury

The Dundee girl who brandished an axe has been vindicated today as the court case has proved that she acted in self defence, her sister was attacked by the adults Ilia Belov and his sister.
Ilia Belov has today been convicted of assault and injury and making sexual remarks to a child.
The court heard previously that the 12-year-old girl Belov attacked admitted pulling a knife and axe from her waistband, but only after Belov had assaulted her.
The girl told the trial previously that her sister started to shout at Belov after the remarks, but the pair were pulled away by a friend.
She then told the court Belova approached the group, pushed her and threw her sister to the ground.

At the time the girl was believed to be the aggressor by many, particularly Freddy Sayers, editor of UnHeard, who called the reaction to the video 'propaganda slop' and Kathleen Stock's article, which did not defend or show much sympathy for the girls although the 12 year old is clearly scared in the video, but was concerned about the right wing narrative on X which emerged as it fitted the narrative of anti immigrant propaganda.

Why on earth was the girl carrying a knife and an axe? That is surely illegal?

I think the real question here is why an adult man felt it appropriate to say to a 12-year-old girl "come here sexy. I will show you how to have a good time" and behave in a threatening abusive manner towards four girls, all of whom were aged between 12 and 14 at the time.

If my daughter had been assaulted and injured by an adult male I would tell her to take whatever measures to protect herself.

Perhaps she'd been threatened/assaulted before, and not been believed?

Because she was a scared 12 year old who was let down by the adults in her life (including the authorities) that should have been protecting her from scum bags like this. Kids don't always make the best decisions, especially when under threat. Poor girl, makes me think of the grooming gangs where the girls were arrested instead of the obvious paedophile men.

It's awful to see such a young girl feeling necessary to carry those weapons. She appears to be protecting her Sister and herself from unwanted adult male attention. How would this have ended had she not shown the weapons? We'll never know that but we do not she was no match physically.

From the BBC report, it sounds like this was an isolated incident. While I'm glad this creepy man and his sister have been convicted, I'm still a little uncomfortable with the idea that people are arming themselves in the street with knives and axes.

@BunnyBunbunbun they were armed because they were frightened of being attacked - and with good reason.

Is being attacked a common, everyday occurrence in Dundee? So everyone should carry knives then, and we can witness a lot more incidents like the murder of Henry Nowak.

Are you afraid when you step out of the house? Do you carry knives and axes with you for self defence?

It’s very clear that the girl had already been assaulted by this man and was terrified for her and her sister’s safety. I don’t think there’s any suggestion that she carried these weapons regularly but in response to this incident.

I'm guessing @faithfultoGeorgeMichael is not 12 years old and is able to make an adult decision on carrying weapons, and probably doesn't.

These girls were 12 and 13 and made an ill-thought-out decision to carry and axe and a knife as a way to protect themselves. They may not have been right, but they're kids.

Please don't use the murder of Henry Novak to make your point.

@BunnyBunbunbun I work with victims of rape gangs and yes, they are frightened of being attacked all the time, constantly. One of the young women I know was raped 37 times in 5 days during August 2023. She was 13.

Carrying knives has the potential to increase risk for children, especially girls who could be more easily overpowered and disarmed by boys and men, who could then use the knives on them.

We need proper community policing so that girls feel safe and protected in public spaces.

@GreyskySexRealistsky I think @BunnyBunbunbun post sums it up, disbelief of the white working class child, judgement and the nasty faux naive questioning. Reminds me of the "White men rape too" on threads where women are literally terrified of gangs of migrant men in their communities.
We are on the brink of serious social collapse in this country but they persist. Blame the local child, protect the adult man she is frightened of. Dog whistle politics remember - look where that thinking has got this shitty government.

Agree ,but if she had been assaulted and injured by an adult male and was terrified and unwisely grabbed a weapon to try to protect herself ,i think she should not be blamed for the assault on her and consider a child feeling she needed a weapon to defend herself ,she should not be blamed at all.

@AlphaApple you have no experience here, and clearly do not live in a community like the one this happened in. The Police are terrifying to most poor children. I was taught by my parents to run away from them and hide. I got over it and reported a sexual assault when I was at University, in 1996. Guess what? I was told I was lying, assaulted by the Police and locked in a cell for 19hrs. My dad came and rescued me. I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2012. This is common.
