It is the height of hypocrisy, isn’t it? The police put out misinformation/disinformation themselves. They stated that the girls (‘youths’) approached the Bulgarian couple. John Swinney swiftly commenting that misinformation was circulating. Yet, we now know it was not misinformation that the dodgy man was the one harassing the girls. Also, it was the man and his sister who assaulted the girls.
First of all, if it was not clear what happened, the police shouldn’t have put out that statement. However, the truth, and the fairness for the girls seem to have been incidental to them. If it wasn’t yet established exactly what happened, the police knew it could be a falsehood they were peddling. So, I think the police knowingly saying something that they knew could be untrue was disinformation. They just didn’t care if what they said was true or not, and tried to pretend others were the one’s peddling lies.
Second of all, if on checking of cctv etc, they could see what happened, they should have retracted what they said as being unsubstantiated. They could easily have said their previous statement was misinformation. If they were quite happy to issue that first statement claiming the girls had approached the couple, it would be a bit coy to suddenly pretend to be concerned about an ongoing case. There should be a formal apology to the girls and their families if that is not already done. And the public they are supposed to serve without fear or favour. And a change in their fast and loose approach to their statements. Especially when it involves women and girls, as this seems to be their very careless spot.
If John Swinney was concerned about misinformation, he should have said it will all come out in the trial. Not adding his tuppence into the misinformation soup.
I think it is how the police, and politicians, acted which is most worrying (and shocking) here. I mean, would you really trust them with any sexual crimes.
Ok, I’m very cynical. And I think becoming more so with every revelation of how the police/ authorities/ societies are complicit in the abuse and lack of justice for women and girls.
