The Bluestocking Pub: Infinite Cocktails, Questionable Logistics

Welcome to the nth iteration of the Bluestocking women’s pub, where gerbils are staff, the drinks are free, and alcohol has no effect except to get you to the sweet spot just before the drink you really shouldn’t have had.

Men can go to the Staunch Ally next door.

It’s OK if you don’t understand. Just assume everything is normal.

@MyrtleLion

Can the person they were meeting at the Blue Stocking come to the galleon instead? Could the seagulls bring them for a quick visit to do whatever needs to be done?

Different if they need something from the actual building, I suppose.

(My internet has been worse than patchy. I’m on a mobile router here and it’s the same every bank holiday weekend. I’m hoping I’m in a window of data opportunity here and this posts…)

AngleofRepose · 25/05/2026 20:55

It's been so hot today, I don't have a single idea at all in my peabrain head 😩

But I do like "Bude Triangle"!

Happy Lilac Towel Day. Many years ago MN graciously changed their standard bunch of flowers into a sprig of lilac for the day. It’s mildly annoying that on this spherical world, the lilacs are mostly over by now - but they were still out in glorious bloom in Scotland above the Great Glen.

My tiny but rather lovely lilac today.

Sending you all hard boiled eggs.

Without giving too much away the Galleon (which needs a name and as it's yours, then you get to name it) will take Gosie further. But some of the Bluestockingers might not want to travel so far and others who are not on board might want to come.

Do let me know whether you want to embark on this quest or disembark. For example, Brains and Batshit might want to lie in the sun rather than travel, but I'm fine either way.

So we need to get some on and some off and we need to let Maud and everyone else know that Gosie is fine. And some people might want to stay at the Bluestocking and do some research. I don't just want to focus on the ship because there is a lot of entertainment in the Bluestocking activities.

So we have to get to a location in the southwest or Ireland where a Bluestockinger is within about a day. I thought of Fuzzpuffling, but she's hard to find and there's more entertainment in not finding her.

The ship can sail quite quickly when she wants to. I'm happy to use a bit of magic to get it somewhere very rapidly but take real time at other times.

Thanks for the UFO suggestion but I fear that introducing it is stretching the imagination a little too far.

I can't remember which Stockinger it was who said she got teased for having an accent that says 'sner on the rerd' for snow on the road - I thought of you when the subtitles on Sky News today referred to 'herbs and dreams' instead of hopes and dreams😁

Subtitles can be hilarious, or just plain weird:
One of the players in a footie match the other day was, allegedly, called 'Annelise Annelise Desktop', and in the same match 'The ref had orally blown her whistle'
The alternatives to blowing a whistle orally don't bear thinking about😬
[it was 'already', as you've probably guessed]

As @EmpressaurusKitty guessed, that was me. It wasn't that I was teased for having the accent - I was teased for not having it. My dad was born and grew up in Hull but my mum was a Londoner and I spent the first almost five years of my life in India, where I was born. When we arrived in Hull (where my dad's work was - he had been in India works managing a paint factory there for them) I apparently had an Anglo-Indian accent, which on a little white girl sounds a bit Welsh. I never picked up the local accent, and in fact my mum sent me to elocution lessons to make sure I didn't.

I've got the week off, I'm on board with an adventure! Don't forget several of us can fly, that might be the solution?

AngleofRepose · 25/05/2026 21:09

I'm happy to stay in the Bluestocking and do research, although I'd have to get there, as I am already on the galleon. I could take the Box back with me if we don't need it anymore (we could refill it with gerbils who need to get home).

I'm also happy to stay onboard if I'm needed for the story.

Sorry, that probably doesn't help.

There is that.

Kitty’s happy to go wherever she can be of most use, including carrying on working undercover.

MyrtleLion · 25/05/2026 21:16

The flying helps actually. And @Magpiecomplex thank you for reminding me you're all blinged up and already on board. I have a way of getting @ChristmasStars on board if she wants to come.

Maybe we get Magpie to fly to shore and enter the pub because it's always a few metres away and to be an emissary with news. Then we can weigh anchor and send a party to the pub and others can come aboard...

If you want to do research at the pub and return the box of distractions to Carmela we can do that @AngleofRepose .

I think you'd struggle to disentangle Batshit from the rigging TBH, Myrtle.

Brains feels compelled to stay and keep an eye on her, and is very happy to sunbathe on the quarterdeck. She has also formed a good relationship with the staff in the galley.

Been trying to think of a name for the galleon like you said @MyrtleLionand it’s not an easy task.

What about The Wrath of Blues?
But, maybe someone can think of something better….

I'm quite happy to be wherever the plot needs someone to be, Myrtle.

I'm still on a high from my adventures on Drake Island and then spending the day frolicking in the rigging with Batshit!

I'm thinking of changing my name on the next thread to DauntlessDamson 😁

ChatGPT and I have fallen out over the logistics of getting to the Bluestocking while on the high seas because it keeps breaking the internal logic.

Therefore no more Gosie today.

Basically anyone can get to the Bluestocking because it's only a few metres from where ever we are. But we all live in different physical places. So chickadee can step out of the Bluestocking and order lobster in Maine but can't meet us all in Plymouth without physically crossing the Atlantic.

So as a lot of the patrons are on the high seas off Plymouth Sound they need to stop somewhere to meet someone who is at the Bluestocking. I don't think they can just stop anywhere and pop in. But ChatGPT doesn't understand this and thinks Swashy can just sail somewhere very quickly - she's on a galleon and the wind is down in this hot weather!

Ideas welcome.

If we are having a brief interlude of reality then Swashy's galleon is square rigged. This means that she can sail with the wind astern, on either quarter or square but struggles to sail against the wind. Happily, the prevailing wind is southerly for the next few days.

I like both. And either will sound good in an interminable ballad about
'..when we said on the Wrathful Blue'
or
'..when we sailed on the Wrath of Blues'

The former might be easier to rhyme with, but that's academic, I've no intention of writing the interminable ballad - but I know who would sing it 😄

Good point about the ballads (and sea shanties) @MarieDeGournay
