Burnham - does he know what a woman is?

Dragonasaurus · 14/05/2026 20:49

Just that really - we’ve had Starmer prevaricating, fence sitting, “most women don’t have a penis” in fact women don’t have a penis’ but somehow I’m going to let Phillipson sit on the guidance which would ensure women’s single sex spaces (some of them anyway)…..

Would Burnham be any better? Does anyone know what his position is?

Of course he knows what a woman is. They all do.

Perhaps not. Perhaps he thinks he is a woman given his utter confidence in pronouncing on what women want. It’s hard to see another explanation for a man presenting women’s views in such a strident way.

The plumber seems moderate by Reform standards and I expect he will win the seat.

Does anyone else think the by-election might not go as planned, and end up with Labour losing to Reform?

I hope so. I’m not a Reform supporter. I’m a Labour voter of 30 years. The hubris of Andy Burnham has finished me off. I’m done with Labour now.

Keeptoiletssafe · 20/05/2026 10:15

He should have a look at my toilet report. He’d change his mind.

On this issue, he might not be the best. But on many others, he has been absolutely brilliant.
i've lived in manchester free the change since he's been there. And it's been so much better. The Bee Network is 100 times better than what was before. Its £2 anywhere in the city. My journey to work used to be £4.70 one way!
His LiveWell Programme is it really innovative and exciting. This city is really booming compared to when I moved here.
He is very well liked.
Part of me doesn't want him to win the by election as I want to keep him as mayor.
That will probably mean farage, get some majority in 2028, which will be fucking ruinous for most people, and sadly mainly women.

Given Lib Dems, Labour and Greens all think women should give up their rights to privacy, dignity and safety in sexed spaces - and Reform want to do the opposite, I am always curious about why people say things like "be fucking ruinous for most people, and sadly mainly women." What part of their policies do you think will hurt women, more than allowing men into female hospital wards and then assault them, or men into women's changing rooms, and then assault them.

As previously stated elsewhere, I am a single issue vote and not at all tribal, having been a Green and Labour member. I cannot see what you are driving at other than the old and very out dated notions of right and left and female rights. Labour is no friend of women, as we see from the views of the Prime minister in waiting.....

The authoritarian left seem to want women to put up and shut up.

Isn’t he a practicing Catholic with several children? I’m pretty sure that somewhere, deep down he does know.

He’s also moved from being a Blairite to his current incarnation as a left winger. Which makes me think he may remember what a woman is once it becomes expedient to do so.

Burnham’s a bloody shape shifter.

He’s been a Blairite, Brownite, Millibandite, Corbynite, insider, outsider, war-monger, pacifist!

He’s as authentic as whatever serves his purpose in the moment.

People say KS ‘flip flops’ - we ain’t seen nothing yet!

And I’m a LP member.

Sorting out the buses is about the only significant thing he's done. All of the recent regeneration ( skyscrapers, new offices etc) stems from the groundwork laid by Howard Bernstein as well as the support the city received from George Osborne when he was chancellor. The regeneration is largely focused on the centre of the city, and just outside of that there remains consideravble deprivation and decay.

The single fare bus cap is actually a national initiative organised I believe through the government and the bus companies. It used to be £2 for a single journey now the maximum is £3.

hholiday · 20/05/2026 10:40

I wonder if he’d agree to meet female victims of violence and abuse and detransitioners to hear about their experiences. As he did the Hillsborough families.

Then he could break down in tears, roll up his sleeves and order a public inquiry into how the authorities (including him) ever went along with this for so long.

Or maybe he just won’t bother. 5k comments and counting on the Mail Online story, however, suggests he might want to give it a try.

Yes, here in Liverpool we have a truly awful Mayor in Steve Rotheram, and even he has managed to acquire a new fleet of hydrogen buses and cap the fares at £2.

I watched the Burnham ad after Camilla and Tim reviewed it on the Daily T. It's pretty slickly made, but you get no sense of what Burnham would want to do as PM. It's him walking about like the Brilliant Kid on the Fast Show, monologuing about Thatcher and Hillsborough, and lots of locals going "eee it's that there Andy Burnham"

As they said on the podcast it's very Reform vibes, and I suppose it's effective if you believe he's a champion of the left behind areas against the Westminster class.

I kind of hope the plumber wins because he would make an interesting double act with Hannah Spencer, and accelerate the transformation of Manchester politics into Super Mario Bros.

Can you get it in front of him? Maybe through someone in the constituency

Hence a Blairite, a Brownite and a Corbynite walk into a bar and the barman says "Evening, Andy".

I will offer if he wants. It’s a bit long for a quick read when you’re busy. I think the picture I always post sums it up and it seems to be taking off on X so maybe he will reflect on what it actually means design-wise for health and safety if all toilets were in a mixed sex environment.

As usual, it’s hit when I am really busy today to deal with campaigning, but I hope there’s a ‘sunlight’ moment for people.

Tell me you work for his office without telling me you work for his office.

"Greater Manchester is home to 2.8 million wonderfully diverse people. But over 500,000 are out of work, 137,000 are long-term sick, and 490,000 live in absolute poverty. Food bank usage is soaring, and mental health issues are on the rise.

innovative and exciting??
Have the numbers gone down?

ScrollingLeaves · 20/05/2026 12:57

“Toilets” do matter especially when you think of girls at school, and women at work.
What does he think the Darlington nurses issue was about, and Sandi Peggie’s?

And important though that issue really is, that is just the tip of a most massive iceberg with children being trans brainwashed, and maimed at the bottom very widest part, and women being stamped over in all sorts of ways in the wide middle.

How very shallow and smug of him to utter a word if that’s all he can think of to say.
