The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

1000 replies

EdithStourton · 09/03/2026 20:35

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

Thanks @CoutingCrones - natural or greek yogurt?
Well done Myrtle 🦁!!!

Took me a while to pop in, Jk987- I peeked in the window a couple of times first 🤓 tis welcoming 🐀

AlexandraLeaving · 10/03/2026 21:32

A big fat cheese scone, please, bar-gerbil. With a stiff gin to go with it. Tonic optional.

@Magpiecomplex - sorry you are feeling shit. Dr Bessie's been living with me but promises to pop over to check on you.

Fingers crossed for @MyrtleLion and the interview.

I wanted to say thank you to all the Blue Stockingers for weighing in on the Woolly Hug thread - the knitters/crocheters and the cheerleaders and of course Maud (I love her best in her PJs or her hoody). I really appreciate it, and I know Wafflenose will do. And young 'Rara' was a strong souls, and would have appreciated knowing there were other strong women behind her. I think I'm trying to knit her alive again, as if if I knit enough squares and try to capture enough of her essence in them it will bring her back. I know it won't, obviously. But anyway, thank you.

Is this thread just for those in the clique? Because why the cryptic opening post? How are other women supposed to de-code this?

Ahhh JK, I was wondering when you'd next appear to query the point of the Bluestocking threads. It's been a while. I don't think we've seen you since Christmas.

Pint?

Wine?

Gin? Although don't ask Glenda, the drunk looking gerbil, as she will drink half of it on the way to your table

WearyAuldWumman · 10/03/2026 21:37

I'm relatively new and I'm still decoding. No electric shocks have been administered for getting it wrong.

worries about mentioning electric shocks

Hello all New visitors and regular posters alike. Another here who reads the threads but doesn't post. I enjoy the poetry, humour, and mutual support in darker days.
Can't say I've ever seen anything but a warm welcome at The Bluestocking. I'll sit in the corner with a mug of tea, and ponder the cryptic crossword if that's ok? Flowers
Ooops, I seem to have included the OP and can't edit it out. More tea needed.

Fair enough. I don’t get it and find it weird and grating. Obviously this is not for me!

KittyWilkinson · 10/03/2026 21:50

Thanks Errol! Cheers!

There's nothing to get. It's a pub. People wander in have a drink, eat food, talk about anything and everything then go about their day. Sometimes it bears a resemblance to real life and sometimes it's like the world has gone mad. Bit like actual pubs.

You've been having the same reaction to Bluestocking threads since 2024.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 10/03/2026 22:00

The more I think about it (which I try not to), the more relieved I am that I wasn't on the Sparp thread.

It's a bit like reading Private Eye. None of it makes sense until it does, and then suddenly the in-jokes are hilarious.

Although ideally this would be a ‘room of requirement’ for every woman, I guess it’s impossible to suit everyone. There’s no reason you or someone else can’t make another ‘pub’ or ‘teashop’ thread without gerbils or whatever if you want. Smile

EmpressaurusKitty · 10/03/2026 22:05

Oh, so Jk987 is the grouchy type who wanders in every so often, complains & wanders out again?

The Sparp thread was before my time I think, what happened?

The sparp thread was... something. I don't remember it very clearly, I probably drank too many of the cocktails.

And hello, Kitty. I trust the gerbils have given you a menu and a quick guided tour?

That was not a good invention! Don't get me wrong I like a savoury drink. But Sparp was a step too far!

KittyWilkinson · 10/03/2026 22:10

All good, thanks Edith.

I think - and as I say I can't really remember - AI, in the days when its spelling was uniformly terrible, ran away with a list of names for cocktails.

And somehow we ended up with one that had Spam in it. Someone else might have a clearer memory of events than I do. Possibly I have just blotted out the horror. Or else I was just blotto on the rather nice citrusy one whose name I have forgotten.

I think sparp was introduced by AI when its spelling was worse than it is now. Although I have a feeling tribbles were involved somehow.

Hedgehogforshort · 10/03/2026 22:25

Thing is @Jk987 you have to stick around and follow for quite some time to get it.

Sometimes i sit in the corner and do not feel involved, sometimes i have no idea what people are talking about, sometimes i have no interest in the topic of discussion. But i always feel at home.

I used to enjoy deep-fried Spam at high/secondary school but that was because they served it with chips and beans.

Halcyon days.

SPARP: Back in the day when AI still couldn't work out how many fingers humans have and couldn't spell to save it's life Fuzzy asked for a Spam cocktail.

If someone fancies reading through that thread they'll find the origin to the Sparp I reckon.

I used to work in a chippie many decades ago. I reckon over the time I was there I ate my body weight in deep fried batter covered spam.

I don't understand
MarieDeGournay · 12/11/2024 20:34
You've come to the right place, then, Jk987, understanding isn't much in demand here, just pull up a comfy chair and go with the flow!
Hot chocolate? Cuppa tea? Something stronger? [though Bluestocking's alcoholic drinks are magically non-alcoholic, but still ..strong]

If you were here before, did you pop in again to see if it had somehow become less weird and grating?😄
We'll never get less weird, I hope, and 'grating' is subjective, but if that's what you think, that's what you think.
I don't think we'll be more to your liking if you pop in againSmile

WearyAuldWumman · 10/03/2026 22:46

It's not that unusual to have virtual pubs or cafės on internet fora.

Now, if you want weird, you should have seen the one on the Doctor Who forum I used to frequent...
