The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

They haven’t got to me either @ChristmasStars. 2am here and I’m still awake.

Morning all! I’m an hour ahead of most of you at the moment but still late. Blush

I knew the rhymes at the end of the other thread - Glad wasn’t the only teacher to use them, my DM did too. So I hear them in her voice.

DeanElderberry · 10/03/2026 08:18

Mornin' all.

Damp here.

I think the sleep gerbils must be tired out with the move. They don't seem to be visiting me tonight.

I just read the post by Myrtle about measurements for a cake. I learnt in french about the quatre quarts cake - 4 quarters. 4 eggs, 250g / quarter kilo of flour, sugar and butter. I thought this was terribly clever of the French and was sure we had nothing like it. An American friend pointed out that this is what pound cake is - a pound of sugar, marg and flour, plus I can't remember how many eggs, so I guess not quite as easy as the french version. And the American version would be massive.

You can just make a half-pound cake with four eggs if a pound cake is too big.

Meanwhile, the Ordnung-gerbil, having been up all night, has gone to have a little lie-down. Gillian has seized the opportunity to pin up a sign behind the bar that says, in huge letters, 'Glenda is 0 days dry'. I can see Gosie hovering, waiting for a chance to take it down without having to start a fight with Gillian.

And Gubbins is crying because her triangle was lost in the move, not helped by Gerlinde telling her to 'just deal with it!' That's a phrase I fear she learned from Gillian.

I shall have to put down my nice cup of tea and distract both Gillian and Gubbins with a walk outside to admire the daffodils.

I did figure you could make it smaller (so long as you remember the ratio of eggs, unlike me) it just made me smile, the difference between the French standard recipe / name and the go large American one.

EdithStourton · 10/03/2026 08:47

Ah, @ChristmasStars like their dessert portions. Sorry, I was knackered last night!

I once had a brownie with ice cream as a mid-morning snack in an ice cream parlour in the US. I could barely eat it all, and didn't need anything else until mid-evening.

A triangle?

I wondered where that had come from

small instruments can easily get dropped in the wrong bag by mistake it seems

midgetastic · 10/03/2026 09:02

I always find it interesting that the standard cake or bun mixture was a 4442 ( 2 eggs, 4oz everything else) when I I was a child and it’s 8553 now - portions have got so much bigger

For me the only meal that ever halted any further appetite for 24 hours was an Ulster fry prepared by G, husband of my friend V. Even a day spent tromping round Emain Macha (in the good old days when the visitors' centre was open) and a National Trust owned woodland couldn't dent it.

MarieDeGournay · 10/03/2026 09:27

Morning all, I was typing a long post, went back to the previous page to check who apart from Britinme had not been visited by the Sleep Gerbils [ it was ChristmasStars, I hope the gerbils caught up with you both eventually] and then when I returned to Page 2, my post had gone, the draft wasn't saved for some reason😠
A quick summary :Thank you for the new thread, Edith; Thank you for the lovely images of locking up Myrtle; as above re Britinme and ChristmasStars; and yaayyy! knittedsloth is back!

On the metric system: I love love love the fact that 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilo - elegant, innit?😄

Boiledbeetle · 10/03/2026 09:43

Help.

I'm in the cellar.

Ha yes exactly that! 😊

@BoiledbeetleI will save you but I’m a bit nervous of those very sharp teeth…

Also does anyone know if the gerbils also help with work. I have a lot on atm and it would be lovely to delegate some.

You'll be fine. I think. It's only me she wants to have for lunch!

I'm sure Gilda and Gwendaline would be happy to do some cash in hand work for you as they are still paying off their credit card bills (way too much Sangria) from the gerbil's holiday in Benidorm.

Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –
When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush
Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring
The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;
The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush
The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush
With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.

What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth’s sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden....

Yeah nice try, Gerard Manley Hopkins, but for capturing the essence of Spring, sorry, but Hedgehogforshort did it better. And in fewer words.

Much better than the lines that sprung to my mind this glorious morning...

Spring is sprung,
the grass is ris,
I wonder where the birdies is.

How can de boid be on de wing
When de wing is on de boid?

Thank you. I'm very grateful.

I'll get the gerbils to being me a full English and a cup of tea. If it takes to long just ignore me nibbling your left leg.

Also can we get some of the gerbils on cleaning duty down to the cellar. It obviously hasn't been touched in about 10 threads.

And one with a hand held vacuum to give me a quick dust down would be appreciated.
