The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

EdithStourton · 09/03/2026 20:35

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

It might be, but when the soil is full of f!ck!ng nettles, it's either digging or Roundup... Which is it to be?

Poor Gillian, I feel almost sorry for her. I've sent over some more chocolate, with pistachios in it. Very classy. I'd eat it myself, if it wasn't Lent.

Cake, I love seedcake. And homemade cakes in general. And see above comment about my chocolate-deprived state. <hopeful>

Gosie reports that she's found a lovely little place for the night, and is onto her second bottle of Margaux.

There is something quite satisfying about nettle roots, thick tough yellow monsters. And not quite as lethal as bramble roots, it was one of those I dislocated my elbow with.

Friends invited me out for dinner on St Patrick's day, and I discovered that neither my host nor his daughter knew the tale of their grand/mother's enterprising scheme to rid her life of caraway seeds, when, aged about 5, she took the tin out of the kitchen when her mother was distracted, and buried it in deep hole dug for the purpose.

Or her disappointment and frustration a few weeks later when a new tin appeared.

When she told me the tale, more than seventy years later, her soul still bore the scars.

I'm so chuffed about the beater thing, there's seedcake for everyone! I followed this recipe

That does sound lovely. I don't share my old neighbour's dislike of caraway.

I think CoutingCrones is PastaAllaNorma in accidental guise isn’t she?
I think you may need a spreadsheet Marie for keeping track of customers and their pseudonyms!Grin

That's what CC wants you to think, but I reckon she's holding Pasta in a basement somewhere while she carries on with Mr Pasta😂

I have just been in my online meditation class.

Fell asleep.

Again.

Have got confirmation of my state pension today. Feeling both grateful and guilty - I'm getting more than expected because it turns out that - five years after his death - because of when he retired, I'm entitled to half of DH's.

Shock Shock Shock

That must have taken some doing.

I didn't realise what I'd done or why I was in so much pain until a couple of weeks later when I was grappling with another bramble and I heard and felt the bones click back into place.

Then I went for an x-ray.

I sympathise. I've been known to topple over whilst dealing with bramble roots and looks for spittoon ssssssssssssssycamore saplings and roots.

There's a large sycamore at the other end of the terrace. The leaves pile up at my end of the terrace and some of the seedlings succeed on hiding in the shrubs and hanging on until they're saplings with tricksy roots.

I sympathise again. I had a dislocated elbow fracture. That was because I fell on ice, mind you.

Well thank you all for some light relief - much needed after reading the goings on with the tribunal. (Bravo Faye RC)
Those witnesses though 😤 still; more sunlight. Staggering the things they haven't head about or are not familiar with. Half expected them to say ' that is your belief'
Honestly, send in the gerbils. That'd show 'em

Enjoy your power chair @CoutingCrones - snazzy!
PS I want Maud's hacking hat

If you've not got your pension yet, @WearyAuldWumman perhaps ypu need to be renamed WearyYoung-ishWumman

I tried some vigorous exercise once. It left me hot, sweaty, dizzy and out of breath. Not recommended.

Over the hill and ready to roll?

WearyAuldWumman · 20/03/2026 00:56

I have a cup of chamomile tea.

Any chance that there's a Night Managerbil who can get me a biscuit to go with it? I quite fancy a custard cream, unusually for me.

I’m sure there is - though maybe the night shift should be covered by a nocturnal species such as hamsters?

No, Hermione the nighthamster prefers playing in one of those ball thingies to working.

Well, she'll never be fat if that's her preference!

Maybe I should get one for myself.

Well, ready to roll. Not over the hill in that sense, obvs.

OOOOh custard creams!. So versatile and polyvalent!
You separate the two halves, right? and then you have the choice of eating the plain side first, thereby leading up gradually to the delight of the creamy side; or you eat the creamy side first, bask in the sheer indulgence of it, and then feel restrained and virtuous when eating the plain side.

It also works with lemon puffs, with the added benefit of scurvy-prevention😁

Morning all, I've obviously woken up silly!🙃
