The Bluestocking - Best Pub on the Internet

EdithStourton · 09/03/2026 20:35

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Excellent (if sometimes wilful) gerbil bar staff, varied cocktails, splendid cakes, cracking Sunday roasts...

Voted Best Pub for the umpteenth thread running, join us for conversation about tractors, units of measurement, films, wildlife, and even, sometimes, women's rights.

Just keep Glenda off the gin.

Any men, you can trot along to the Staunch Ally just up the road.

She's still annoyed with me. So I think I'm not on the list🤞

From way back in 1970, what I'm told is the first photo of a snow leopard in the wild.

Really? Are they very reclusive? It must have been so exciting for the photographer to take the first photo in the wild.Smile

FuzzyPuffling · 19/03/2026 18:03

Sorry, not very talkative recently.

I still feel sorry for Gillian. It's awful when you're trying your very best and everyone keeps excluding you. She's always welcome to the burrow, where she knows she is loved and calms right down. We can't all be Maud.

You are, but Maud has changed you to 'IcokethereforeIam'. <Sniff>😁

I think I've unearthed a scandal at the VIc Bluestocking!
CoutingCrones seems to be having a thing with Pasta Alla Norma's DH:

If I can persuade Mr Pasta to make me a coffee, my morning will be pretty much perfect. 😮😮😮😮😂

I do love her.... I just don't love the thought of Pilates at 5.15am 6 days a week and a 12 mile jog on the 7th!

lcakethereforeIam · 19/03/2026 18:12

Gillian's exercise classes are a big hit with most of the gerbils, Balrog, some capybara, a few of the quokka and several pygmy hogs. The goats are looking forward to the running club at the weekend. They've nicknamed it Sparp Run. The flying squirrels are still hibernating, but they might be interested if there's still some winter chub to shift when they wake up.

Maud, having woken from her nap is on it.

I didn't realise she was a hacker in her spare time.

Thank you Maud.

MarieDeGournay · 19/03/2026 18:14

Gillian is lucky to have you on her side, you are so understanding and supportiveSmile
You deserve a medal - no, you've already had a medal, you deserve a big hug from Quentina the Quokka.

They're quite rare and usually live in remote areas of the Himalayas and the Stans. I wonder if there was a Yeti type thing going on where westerners thought they were a mythical beast from folklore, and didn't accept they were real until Russian explorers went into the region in the 19th century.

Unfortunately, Gillian is one of nature's PE teachers, and I was always the last one chosen for a sports team. She's lovely, but we have very different worldviews. She can keep her exercise, and I won't try foisting an understanding of cation exchange capacity on her.

Every hacker should dress like that

Puffers, I'm prepared to be welcoming and inclusive to almost everyone in almost every situation BUT not if it entangles me with the deployment of an

exercise

spreadsheet.

I hardly know which of those words strikes a greater chill in my heart.

Perhaps you could redirect Gillian's enthusiasm to something less antisocial. I'm sure she's a nice gerbil really. At bottom. Well meaning but clueless. The vegetable garden needs digging over after the winter. She could organise that. Actually, she could do that.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/03/2026 18:23

She's in the corner of the burrow, feeling her efforts are unappreciated, and sobbing her little gerbil heart out.
I've promised her some nut chocolate now, and a day out tomorrow, so gerbil aerobics are cancelled. As you were.

Oh yes, double digging a couple of acres of veg plot should be a good use of all that energy. Or Clara could rig up a wheel to the Bluey's consumer unit and she could help supply electricity to the grid?

Slave labour!

Also "no dig" gardening is much better for retaining the soil structure.

I know that, and you know that, but does Gillian? She'd be great at double digging!

She needs the protein.

DeanElderberry · 19/03/2026 18:33

Gillian is a grown adult gerbil and knows perfectly well that people attacked with exercise spreadsheets will defend themselves against the aggressor. Her efforts are not just unappreciated, they are uninvited and unnecessary.

It would be nice if she could find something better to do, but is she can't she needs to accept that some of us do not want to be on her lists or in her classes.

Nothing personal.

I think you may need a spreadsheet Marie for keeping track of customers and their pseudonyms!Grin

lcakethereforeIam · 19/03/2026 19:44

She should take the win. Lots of Bluestocking creatures are up for a bit of exercise. Gymnasia's enthusiasm is, frankly, a bit disturbing.

I've just baked a seedcake. I discovered I had three packs of caraway seeds. I'm not certain why I even wanted one, but this is the situation I've found myself in. Anyway, while not exactly a taste sensation, it's pleasant enough. This however is a side issue. The Kenwood Chefette, that was given to me by my mum, that's possibly older than I am, if you press on a bit of the case, it moves down and the beaters are ejected! I had no idea! I'm don't think my mum knew either. Though there's no way of telling now. I just used to wrestled the fuckers out!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2026 19:55

Meanwhile I’ve done my exercise and movement rings, thank you very much Gillian I sha’n’t need your help today. Today was a game of two complementary halves. Firstly a trip to the Trafford Centre for DH’s favourite shop, the Apple Store though our purchases were for me and DD. Then Bridgewater RHS, which is developing nicely, lots of daffodils and other spring flowers.
And then some time in the garden, tidying up the barrel ponds a bit and getting the patio pots back in place and putting a couple of plants I bought at the rhs into pots. Didn’t come in till about 6:30, plenty of light still in the pink-streaked sky.Smile
