Welcome to The Bluestocking, the welcome is warm, the conversation is wide-ranging, the food and drink are delicious but magically free from anything they need to be free from, and the bar staff are highly-trained, professional, efficient and very friendly gerbils.

Bad luck, Damson.
My Christmas cold has just about gone - I had a lingering cough for weeks. I hope yours is a quicker one.

I could definitely do with a capybara massage after the day's exertions, as could Brains who was so tried and so comprehensively asleep on the sofa that she didn't even come into the kitchen to investigate at dinner time (normally she is hypersensitive to any kitchen noises, fridge door, chopping board, cutlery).

@Igneococcus I envy you the pear tree.

We are already talking about maybe planting another one. One cannot have too many pear trees, or any other fruit trees really.

Grazie mille, @MarieDeGournay

And I do love a Tigger enthusiasm 😘

Do you want the gerbils to bring you a hot toddy?

Thank you Errol. Granola just arrived with a concoction which she says is a certain kill or icure.Ive gone a bit deaf. Not sure if I heard properly.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2026 21:11

That could be a mutually beneficial arrangement - a hedgehog would be just the job when i get an itch between my wings.

😂😂😂

That's because you used the time portal to get here, & it was accidentally set to Christmas 2026. We haven't got there yet.

Oops! Sorry!

Boiledbeetle · 17/01/2026 23:56

@ChristmasStars

Gwenda says thanks for the lift, but she'll walk the rest of the way to the bar.

I am doing a late night wander around Youtube and totally forgot about this.

i was playing a Fleetwood mac track and the original members reminded me of something.

Many moons ago i picked up Goyte, someone i used to know, and then picked up a cover which was a bit mad by Walk off the earth, where the whole band played the song on one guitar between all of them.

Which was also a hit.

but then then “Key of awesome” did a parody of this that i fair wet myself laughing at the “plinker” reminded me of the old blokes in fleet wood mac.

You all might find it funny, the female has the “band baby”

you need to see walk off the earth first to get it.

AsWithGlad · 18/01/2026 02:22

Thinking of Caroline Criado Perez, I have a picture with her arm round my shoulders. It’s too late to make a sensible decision about whether to post it, so I won’t.

It was taken after an event in 2019, soon after the book was published, where she was interviewed by Hadley Freeman.

Edit - photo with my face obscured, naturally.

We have a spot where a small tree might be a good idea. I'm contemplating a quince.

There's a shared orchard in our allotment (mostly apples) and we planted a quince there last year. I can't wait for the first harvest. We're in Scotland though, this might take a while before we get a good crop. My friend in Munich has a very old quince tree in the middle of her patio and it's huge, you can sit there with a glass of wine and feel like you're in the middle of a pink cloud when it's in full bloom.

MyrtleLion · 18/01/2026 11:01

I have arrived.

Slight delay caused by searching for @Boiledbeetle's stash. She is really, really good at hiding them. I suspect some may have been left behind in the last thread...

I have a quince! The fruit producing kind, rather than the mostly floral one
It's a beautiful tree, lovely shape. Gorgeous pale pink blossom and then the wonderful scented fruit.

It's in a very large pot by the back door and I love it.

Honest, guv, I was just being helpful.

@Hedgehogforshort I remember the Walk off the earth parody with the guitar. I'm off to look up the Key parody now...

What an entrance Myrtle! The gerbils look so cute, and you look magnificent.

Thanks for bringing my Tunnock's, I was out when the pub moved and by the time I got to the pub the door was locked.

I shall now have 6 tea cakes as a mid morning snack

😘

You've made my day week month by introducing me to Walk off the Earth, Hedgey!

I wasn't feeling great this morning, and feeling a bit fed up with not feeling great so many mornings [fibromyalgia and a few other things added on recently] and then I watched their 'Material Girl' and it had me laughing out loud, and now I'm smiling.
They are so funny, and so good, and so joyfulSmile

I'm saving Key of Awesome for more bad mornings. thank you😄

You'll appreciate Key of Awesome when you get there @MarieDeGournay I have just gone down quite a rabbit hole.

MarieDeGournay · 18/01/2026 11:37

Wow, Myrtle, way to go gurl! You look like the personification of majestic, and the gerbils' cocked hats would knock any other cocked hat into a cocked hat😄

Damson, it's been an up and down week for you, hasn't it? First you find yourself immortalised in the phrase 'a Damson's hairbrush', then you get a cold - O Fortuna, velut luna, statu variabilis and all thatFlowers

Hey Hedgey, has Walk off the Earth ever done a cover of Carmina Burana, I'd like to see that😂

For newcomers - Damson reported that her hairbrush had mysteriously disappeared off the face of the earth instead of being where it always was, and I recognised that phenomenon: something that you can lay your hand on immediately for the past 364 days suddenly and inexplicably is nowhere to be found anywhere in the house..
That's now referred to as 'a Damson's hairbrush' 😄

Damson found the hairbrush, but then a cold found her - see above about the vagaries of Fate, ever-changing like the moon...🙁

Magpiecomplex · 18/01/2026 11:43

I was in a performance of Carmina Burana once. Great fun, and I can still remember most of the words, which is occasionally handy.

EdithStourton · 18/01/2026 11:58

One of those tiny Tunnocks-bearing ponies appears to have a cloven rear roof, and another looks part cat.

Android....?

I'm also becoming suspicious that half of the 'items removed' on Boily's tally are Tunnocks wrappers.

MyrtleLion · 18/01/2026 12:11

I do like to arrive in style...

MyrtleLion · 18/01/2026 12:12

Walk Off the Earth are brilliant. I must admit I had seen the Gotye version before.

But wow!

Key of Awesome - even better! I am a fan of parody. Off to see what else they've done.

MarieDeGournay · 18/01/2026 12:22

Thank you for the music and the laughs, Hedgey, you are a ⭐Smile

Never come across Walk Off The Earth until today and I'm utterly charmed.

Holy shit, they are from Burlington! My brother was born there! I lived there until I was 5.
