Welcome to The Bluestocking, the welcome is warm, the conversation is wide-ranging, the food and drink are delicious but magically free from anything they need to be free from, and the bar staff are highly-trained, professional, efficient and very friendly gerbils.

Just so you all remember what I look like...
It's a bit quiet.

That's because you used the time portal to get here, & it was accidentally set to Christmas 2026. We haven't got there yet.

Britinme · 17/01/2026 17:32

Snow still falling - DH strongly discouraging driving so I’m home instead and safe to have a stiff gin and a Tunnocks.

Damson's gerbils and Boily's gerbils have met up and are getting thoroughly sloshed. This may get noisy.

Eta top left looks like one of Android's gerbils.

What can I say? I thought the extra arms would come in handy. Ho ho.

(OK, Boily, I think that's distracted them all from thinking about why we might have a 6-legged gerbil about the place. Are you & Gerald still together?)

I was getting all excited about wedding hat shopping for a moment there!

Is that you Cilla? Have you come to keep the giant wombat company?

I think Glenda is planning on joining you judging by the two bottles she's dropping off at your table.

I have no idea why you've insisted on drinking outside though! Blame the AI for that.

Glenda! Put the gin DOWN!

Glenda! Put the gin DOWN!

She's been sober for a whole 12 hours. She's reduced to licking the sobriety chip.

I've just realised that at least one woman in that picture has committed the MN cardinal sin of wearing white as a wedding guest. Unless it's a double wedding.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2026 18:34

I’m in London for a few days. Never mind snowdrops…there are azaleas and daffodils out here!

EdithStourton · 17/01/2026 18:36

It's diff'rent in Lunnun.
Weird place.

Maybe it's their wedding?Smile

That's true, Marie. The positioning of each woman next to an age-appropriate man suggests not, but who am I to figure out the inner workings of what, for the sake of argument, we will call AI's mind.

MarieDeGournay · 17/01/2026 18:43

Here's a poem about dogs, Brains and Batshit might like itSmile
Ode to a German Shepherd

Did Otto dream of his family
the first night he slept in our house?
The press of their bodies still by his side.
The air warm and damp with their breath.
Only to wake to the smell of a strange bed,
only to stumble to the silver water bowl,
the kibble softened with unfamiliar milk.

Family was all that mattered to him,
a shining noun that drove him through the days.
On forest walks, he charged up and down,
herding us. I walked ahead, my mother behind.
Otto could not bear the growing distance.
If he had spoken, he might have said,
You two. Work it out. But we never did.
He moved across the unspeakable things
and required no language, not even his name.

In winter, I threw a stick out on thin ice.
A betrayal. He skittered across the surface.
It cracked under his weight. He plunged in,
only to emerge sopping wet, fur flattened,
the stick clenched in his jaw. Shivering.
Returning to my side as if it were nothing.
When I look back, he always seems to be
forgiving me with those frank eyes,
shiny as the drops he shook into the air.

I might drink outside at the Bluestocking, where the temperature is always... temperate, but I wouldn't do it here right now. We may have to go to the supermarket as I'm nearly out of milk unless I mix up the emergency pack of dried milk, and I'm not a fan of black tea. I also have no chocolate, and in this house Saturday night is movie night accompanied by Saturday night chocolate. That's two vital reasons to venture out into the snow. DH says he will brush it off the car and clear a pathway to the street so it doesn't get compacted into an ice pack by being driven on.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/01/2026 18:46

Great peom Marie, and I'm not even a dog person. (Team Cat)

MarieDeGournay · 17/01/2026 18:46

No milk for a cuppa and no chocolate?😨 - that's grim, Britinme, and would push any True Brit to feats of heroics, in spite of snow and iceSmile

Oh please can Giant Wombat sprout wings and go and rescue her quickly? She looks so lost, and it's not going to end well for her there, is it?😱

Lovely poem, @MarieDeGournay

Brains is currently sparko on the sofa. She says she'll read it in the morning... But thank you for the kind thought.

Batshit wants to know what reading is.

Don't panic! Gingivitis to the rescue - although she doesn't seem too familiar with the Highway Code. I'm sure it'll be fiiiine.
