Welcome to The Bluestocking, the welcome is warm, the conversation is wide-ranging, the food and drink are delicious but magically free from anything they need to be free from, and the bar staff are highly-trained, professional, efficient and very friendly gerbils.

obviously too large to fit onscreen!
Hedgey, you deserve it - sounds like a very trying time.

I have an old friend, and her husband, who live about half an hour inland from here. Haven’t see her for twenty years. Anyway, I emailed her last week and explained about me being nearby (she’d heard about Bear already) and she kindly invited me for lunch tomorrow.

I was with the secret fishermen that evening and mentioned this in passing as we chipped in with conversation. One chap said “Ooh, be careful!”. I asked why and he said he’d done the same thing a while back; reconnected with a couple he hadn’t seen for twenty years. I asked what happened and he said “Well, let me put it this way. I walked out before we’d even finished the starter!”.

I should have probed further but either it felt too intrusive to ask or the conversation just moved on. Obviously, now I’m fascinated…

Oooh. I hope you're ok. Alternatively, i hope it takes a good story for us. (And you're safe, of course)

I like being four. Thanks. X

FuzzyPuffling · 25/01/2026 21:21

I definitely need a "yikes" emoji for a lot if this.
Hope Hedgey's family are all ok.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2026 21:32

You must be knackered, Hedgey. Hope the lurgy stays away from you.

Swashbuckled · 25/01/2026 21:33

Sounds exhausting @Hedgehogforshort I hope the alcohol is helping you relax.

I’m going for lunch tomorrow @FuzzyPuffling Hopefully all will be well. When I next see the secret fisherman I might try a bit of probing… 🙂

Just the job, i just jumped in the glass and drank it down from the inside hic….

EdithStourton · 25/01/2026 22:10

Hedgey, you must be knackered.
And wasted, after all that gin.

DH has volunteered to begin the night in the spare room. He probably suspects that I will kick him very hard if he snores at all next to me, and doesn't fancy the bruises.

I got into the garden this afternoon, and levered out a whole lot of brambles and a massive euphorbia. I'm trying to tidy up the end of the garden to make space for a proper compost bin, and bramble-removal is Phase 1.

@Swashbuckled three times in the last few years I've met up with friends I'd not seen in years (as in, decades). Every one has been a great success.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2026 22:59

The self-exile of your DH combined with tough plant eradication should hopefully ensure the visitation of the sleep gerbils tonight, Edith.

Myrtle: 'The baby blanket is finished and attached. I bought blocking mats with an Amazon voucher given to me by The Girl in the Tower (DSD - we call her that because she has the top floor to herself and we rarely see her, and she loves the nickname).
I was able to pin the blanket out using the grid lines, so it's mostly very straight. You can see where I accidentally knitted stocking stitch instead of seed stitch in one row, but I don't care.'

Oh, I love that stitch! Did you spray the blanket when you blocked it? I had a blocking set for Christmas, too, but I haven't tried it yet. Did it make a big difference to the blanket?

Insoaked it in lukewarm water for 20 minutes. Then gently squeezed it and laid it on a towel. I then rolled up the towel with the blanket in it and stood on it.

Then I pinned it to the blocking mats. I only had 9 and it was 4 X 3 mats, so one edge and a corner were pinned to the carpet.

I have made another bootie this evening and sewn up the two pairs I made yesterday. I will make its pair and block them all then take pictures so you can see them. They are ridiculously cute 💙

MyrtleLion · 25/01/2026 23:49

Happy birthday Fuzzy! You look amazing and quite grown up for four.

Sorry to hear your word, Hedgey. I think you must be a great help your hoglette who would otherwise have had to manage by herself.

But do take time for yourself and rest. None of us are getting any younger and powering on through might need to be done in a gentler fashion.

@SionnachRuadh I was watching the Traitors Ireland. Siobhán McSweeney is a wonderful host and speaks Gaelic! And because of your username, when they were trying to translate from Gaelic to English, they said sionnach and I yelled at the TV: FOX! Not squirrel. SIONNACH means FOX!!!

So thank you! 💙

MarieDeGournay · 26/01/2026 00:14

Oh well done for the Gaelic translation, Myrtle!
The Bluey is so educational!😄

If SionnachRua was a red squirrel instead of a red fox she'd be IoraRua
[irra..]

Newcomers may not be aware that our resident shrink is an iora ruaSmile

'And how does that make you feel?'

I like Siobhan MacSweeney on The Great Pottery Throwdown on Channel 4 - very entertaining. I’m going to have to fire up the VPN to watch Traitors too I think.

Meanwhile here in the land of the free, snow has been falling steadily since early afternoon and is supposed to be continuing overnight, so we expect about a foot of it to be there in the morning. Temperature last night was -21C and likely to be the same tonight. Still it will with any luck keep ICE off the streets downtown, where they have been harassing people. There have been protests but frankly at my age it’s too damn cold and treacherous underfoot to go out there. I need the dream-gerbils to send me a nice dream in which they all get thrown off a wharf into the docks.

Stay warm. Sounds like the storm hit worse in some of the areas which unlike yours aren’t equipped for snow and cold.

It's on iPlayer. She is very flamboyant, particularly during the picking of the Traitors. Very different to Throw Down.

And where Claudia is so nice it felt wrong for her to throw away the pictures of the murdered, Siobhán is just nonchalant.

She is also in Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue.

I think I love her.

Chersfrozenface · 26/01/2026 09:35

Sadly Siobhan MacSweeney is full in TWAW.

This was her reaction to the Irish Rugby Football Union saying men couldn't play in women's rugby, even when they claim to be women.

"Ah come on now. All this silliness to ban 2 (two) women? Hurtful. Thoughtless. Disrespectful. And really silly."

That is sad. I don't love her any more.

Happy birthday for yesterday Fuzzy late to the party as ever! hope it was a good day x

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 26/01/2026 10:35

Hope you're keeping warm and safe @Britinme I've just been watching the US storms on the news and being thankful that we don't get those extremes here.

Love the new thread title @MyrtleLion 💪

Hope everyone who needed it, managed to get a good night's sleep💤

I'm off to the tip this morning to get rid of yesterday's gardening debris.

New thread.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5481554-the-bluestocking-womens-pub-definitely-full-of-ludicrous-halfwits-who-refuse-to-get-a-grip-with-unionised-gerbils

Do fill this one up first. The gerbils might miss the bus otherwise.

See you later. I have the dentist.

Of course we will fill up this one first.

I wouldn't dream of going to the new thread to hide Tunnock's whilst no one is around.

Boiledbeetle · 26/01/2026 11:30

I'd help with the move but I've got stuff on this morning. I'm sure the gerbils and capybaras have it all in hand though.

I think the awful truth is that just about anybody in the public eye who you like for some reason is TWAW😒
That likelihood may be higher if the public figure is Irish😟

I've only seen SMacS on the pottery programme, and of course Derry Girls, and I prefer to just focus on her as the wonderful Sr Michael who I'm absolutely sure despises genderwoo - like she despises the French [that was the reason she gave for not accompanying the girls on the school trip to Paris 'I despise the French']

Which is why Róisín Murphy is so wonderful, so very brave, and such a national treasure 💚
That said, you have to like her music to be a 100% fan, but 99.99% is okSmile

Thank you for the new thread, Myrtle, I wondered who would take on the task of naming it! I was going to put a call out to whats-her-name to ask what would work for herGrin but you've pre-empted that nicely. I wonder will she return to make a comment about it.

Good luck at the dentist, hope it's nothing dramatic.

Sending warm thoughts over to you Britinme, all the ice/ICE-related news out of the US is frightening in one way or another. Take care of yourself.

January has been so miserably and relentlessly and endlessly dreich here that somebody said the date today was January the 58th😒

But we're getting off lightly in comparison! We shouldn't complain about mere rain and wind - but we will, we will...😏

Knitting tips and recipes request?

Here’s a bit of general information which sort-of fits. It’s from Ravelry, a knitting, spinning and crochet social network site, pockets of which are TWAW but all of which is anti-Trump afaik.

Copied from the page of the pattern which is selling the most at the moment:

In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.

Here are the currently most popular patterns on Ravelry: see screenshot.
