Welcome to The Bluestocking, the welcome is warm, the conversation is wide-ranging, the food and drink are delicious but magically free from anything they need to be free from, and the bar staff are highly-trained, professional, efficient and very friendly gerbils.

And now I've cranked up the AI have a Bluestocking hug. And refreshments.

The AI focused on the soup dragon part of your name.

@Swashbuckled Did you finish Patience? I watched them the other way round, & found Astrid touching & enlightening, & Patience... not, so I gave up on it in case it spoilt my memories of Astrid. Did it get any better?

I love Astrid. Before the last series I rewatched all the previous episodes. I’m really looking forward to the latest series starting.

The first series of Patience wasn’t as good, in my opinion, but I liked that it wasn’t a straight copy of Astrid. I have recorded Patience s2 so far and am saving it up to watch when The Traitors has finished.

Into the Woods is one of my favourite musicals, possibly second only to Sweeney Todd. My local playreading group went on an outing to see Into the Woods at the restored Grade 1 listed Regency theatre in Bury St Edmunds. It was an amateur production, but it was good, especially if you ignored the school students who were included - as trees IIRC. Several of our group left at half time, though, so they missed where it all turns round.

I have a confession

When looking for my autograph book earlier I discovered about 300 ish writing pens that have not yet been sorted.

Aghhhhhhhhhh

They hide in drawers and cupboards -
those disagreeable dozens of pens with their smug presence,
blue and black hordes of them.
But their stay of execution
is now up.

I planted some winter aconites last week, under a couple of small trees. They won't do much this year, but I hope they'll come back properly next year. I'm now looking for some wood anemones.

P'raps you could plant some ferns instead, Damson, because with fronds like that, who needs anemones?😁

groan

😂

We gave up on Patience after trying a couple of episodes. Both DH and I found it gimmicky and dull, dull, dull.

The blood test wait was another hour. So I left the house at 0905 and returned at 1623. A long day.

I came home to a demand for payment for a service plan for the car we sold on the 20 December. I couldn't cancel it on the day we sold it because they were shut and what with Christmas happening the next week it got missed. But I did cancel the direct debit, so I obviously intended to cancel it. And they couldn't service a.car into longer own. So I have a complaint in and hopefully they will waive the charges.

Or I'll start mentioning the Financial Ombudsman and the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

The Ombudsman properly puts the wind up organisations that try their luck. I waved the threat of the Energy Ombudsman recently and as if by magic they suddenly accepted liability for what had been their cock-up.

I'd logged my complaint by the time they bothered to email me with their mea culpa, so I'm hoping I might get a few quid out of them as well.

MyrtleLion · 20/01/2026 10:42

Although I have four Things to do today, first one doesn't start till 11am so I'm drinking cardamom tea, listening to Smooth Relax radio and getting my MN Bluestocking fix. 💙

EdithStourton · 20/01/2026 11:30

BSE, @AsWithGlad?
Live in it but don't catch it, as it is sometimes known in these parts.

I don't know how many times I've driven past the sugar factory.

DrAuroraSoupDragonsFriend · 20/01/2026 11:34

@MyrtleLion , thanks, I knew it was a good idea to return here. I didn't know about cardamom tea and I've been looking up how to make it while waiting in a very long phone queue to speak to a customer services technical team. I've just had a small success with them and I've discovered an in-date (unusual since I haven't checked my spices for dates in ages) jar of organic cardamom pods in the cupboard. The day is looking up!

I buy it commercially. It's a bit fiddly cracking open cardamom pods.

I can send you a link if you want.

DrAuroraSoupDragonsFriend · 20/01/2026 11:39

Ooh, yes please.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/01/2026 12:12

I am doing bugger all today, apart from watching the kamikaze window washers clambering around on our neighbours’ sloping roof, to reach their bathroom window - no safety gear or harnesses - it’s an accident waiting to happen!

We have dh’s brother and his wife staying for a few days, which has been fun - and it’s been good to have a proper catch up after the funeral. It has been a very stressful and people-y couple of months, though, so I am slightly looking forward to a quiet house, with dh working, and me just being very quiet on my own.

..or you could just as a bargerbil to bring you a cup of perfect cardamon tea, and hey presto!Smile

Cardamom tea sounds lovely. I've just had a strong coffee as a bribe to myself to get busy

I've got a list of health-related tedious chores to do today, so obviously I'm pissing about in the Bluestocking instead.

I'm reluctantly accepting I am disabled rather than temporarily not very mobile. I'm still railing against that reality whilst sorting out blue badges, mobility assessments and shite like that.

Do the bargerbils also deliver snacks? I CBA making lunch toy.

Britinme · 20/01/2026 13:59

Has anybody else tried Teecino? (Autocarrot just rendered that as Trevino, but I do not mean him). It’s a no-caffeine tea/coffee substitute which is quite nice providing you don’t expect it to taste like either. These days I don’t do caffeine after noon because it affects my sleep, and I don’t even do decaf tea or coffee after 6, but I’ve quite enjoyed this. A bit pricey but I only have one or two a day.

Hello fuzzy, when I was looking for you yesterday to make sure you got into the choir I came across two possible sightings of you, but they seem to be both in the wrong Season. You weren't anywhere near the Bluestocking, though!

Hello @PastaAllaNorma I'm sorry to hear of your health issues. Hopefully, once you have sorted all the admin involved, it will at least help make life a bit easier for you. Meanwhile, do take full advantage of the fact that the Bluestocking has all kinds of delicious snacks to tempt you and without any calories, gluten or whatever else you shouldn't be eating.

I'm low carb at the moment, so I'd like a hot chocolate and a cheese toastie, with a large piece of coffee and walnut cake to follow, please gerbils.

The town of Naas - from Nás na Rí, the meeting place of the kings - used to have, possibly still has, a sign on the outskirts that says
NAAS- A NICE PLACE TO SHOP.
Wow. Hold me back.
However, they've made up for it with their t-shirts😁
