‘Transphobic’ Christmas card pulled from Sainsbury’s

IwantToRetire · 17/12/2025 19:47

The card was deemed offensive for featuring a cartoon of Dr Seuss’s Grinch character alongside the caption: “This Christmas, I’m identifying as a Grinch.”

The phrase “identifying as” in this context has been described by trans campaigners as an anti-trans dog whistle for suggesting that a person can choose their gender to be anything.

Some TW stand a better chance of passing as a Grinch than a woman

Do we actually know that the Grinch identifies as male, or are we just assuming here?

Since when has the phrase " I identify as" been solely the proviso of trans identities? I remember decades ago, bad jokes about lazy people identifying as go-getters or whatever. They really do think everything's about them.

I don't think anyone has claimed "I identify as" is solely the proviso of trans identities.

What has been taken issue with here is the use of the common, tired old trans joke: "If a man can identify as a woman, I'm going to identify as a helicopter/roast dinner/whatever" to flog cheap Christmas tat by a major supermarket. I can see how a trans person might find it objectionable, or at the very least be sick of hearing it. I don't agree, but then it's not aimed at me.

"You're a mean one, Mr Grinch"

Unless he's transitioned since!

Glad to see we are concentrating on the important issues in the world 🙄 what idiot complained about this fgs?

misscockerspaniel · 18/12/2025 14:21

No doubt we are being monitored by TRAs so I won't mention that I bought a feminist Christmas card from Waitrose. Sorry, no wish to derail. As you were 🎅

Stopbringingmicehome · 18/12/2025 14:24

It's clearly blasphemy and heresy in a Christmas card

Stopbringingmicehome · 18/12/2025 14:26

LittleGreenDuck · 18/12/2025 11:27

Funny you say that, I'm doing the opposite.

I didn't stand a chance of winning my age category at Parkrun, but now I identify as being 90 I'm top of the leaderboard 🏆

I'm thinking of doing this , identify as a 90 year old man, did you really do it and was there any push back?

Oh do share. Why should they object - don’t some of them ‘identify as feminists’?

I thought that was exactly what trans campaigners thought people could do? How confusing

The Grinch uses he / his pronouns, but who knows what that means these days.

Maybe Dr Seuss just assumed The Grinch was a grumpy old bloke?

Well, as we all know, sadly, some of the folk attracted to this forum are driven by a FOMO. Whatever we have, they want it, and nothing - not even the Supreme Court - will stop them for they are driven by male entitlement a need to colonise. Colonise our threads, women's sport/toilets/changing rooms etc. I would hate for them to get in a stew with Waitrose or John Lewis, or Amazon come to that. As for the card itself, it is totally harmless and nothing to do with males. It simply states the truth: "Three Wise Women would have asked for directions, arrived on time, delivered the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole...and there would have been Peace on Earth".

In fairness, the Magi did ask for directions, from Herod.

IwantToRetire · 18/12/2025 17:32

Should we all be cutting up our Nectar cards and returning them to Sainsburys?!

I actually feel sorry for the card makers. I am sure they are "innocent", but being made to feel so guilty as to not only withdraw but destory the cards is just extreme. Have the TRAs so deeply catechised the country that some will so deeply repent of their sins and acknowledge them publicly?

This comment too is grossly offensive, and I can't possibly see how anybody could ever find it funny........

Edited

I remember a little while ago someone circulated a picture of one of his many different coloured bins his local council has told him he had to use. But the problem was the recycling one wasn't big enough. So he taped a note of one of the other bins to say it identified as green.

It got shared on social media. Nobody complained.

Very good! Though I suspect the colonisers might not have too much FOMO re stable cleaning etcGrin

I look forward to the day that "identifying as" gets cancelled.

That and "dog whistle".

It's not transphobic to object to nonsensical and abusive manglings of language.

Yes! Mumsnet actually accused me of "dog-whistling" in a very passive aggressive email. My 'crime' was being on the receiving end of racial abuse and wanting to talk about it! I was already upset and to have that thrown at me when I was feeling vulnerable was awful.

That phrase is literally just an excuse to shut people down when they want to discuss something you're not comfortable with. It's saying "I don't have anything real I can throw at you, so I'm going to imply that you're doing something terrible without the need of any real grounds. Now shush."

Awful card. Glad it’s off the shelves.

I'm only sorry I didn't know. I don't usually bother with Christmas cards but there are a couple of people I know who would chuckle at this.
Real trans people have a sense of humour and crucially know they didn't actually change sex.

It's the ridiculously increasing number of deluded attention seekers who want the world turned upside-down to suit them. Many trans people take the piss out of them and can't stand their entitled attitude just like the majority of the population.
We have adults openly identifying as furry animals now. This card was barely satire.

The ridiculous Sophie Molly/Sparkles/who the fuck knows appears to be taking credit and the other members of his creepy polycule appear to have given him a framed copy of the offending card as a keepsake of his bravery.

Reading that back, it sounds made up but it's all true, I shit you not.

Mole at the Counter has done a wee edit to the card

That’s brilliant. I can’t believe with everything that’s going on in the world that this is getting any airtime.

Not seeing the transphobia here. Unless, of course, TRAs don't like how it spotlights the absurdity of "identifying" as anything.

Poor show by Emotional Rescue in pulling it.

I note that the sea of sexist birthday cards in which steam trains, golf, and cars are for dad and brother, but prosecco, dresses, and heels are for sister and mother, remain on the shelves. I like steam trains and my family have never been able to get me a card with them on unless it's one of those blank cards.

i got a spiderman card for my DD once (she was over 18 but that's besides the point). It was one of the old school 70s spiderman illustrations.

Anyway, small shop, with a post office, and i had to post it to her. But they only had ones that said "happy birthday Son" so i used a sharpie to make Son into Daughter, wrote the card and posted it. The woman behind the counter saw me do all that and was a bit nonplussed. But a sale is a sale, right?

Perhaps we should all complain to Sainsbury's about having to have prosecco cards because no train cards say "mum"?
