‘Transphobic’ Christmas card pulled from Sainsbury’s

The card was deemed offensive for featuring a cartoon of Dr Seuss’s Grinch character alongside the caption: “This Christmas, I’m identifying as a Grinch.”

The phrase “identifying as” in this context has been described by trans campaigners as an anti-trans dog whistle for suggesting that a person can choose their gender to be anything.

I look forward to the day that "identifying as" gets cancelled.

That and "dog whistle".

It's not transphobic to object to nonsensical and abusive manglings of language.

plantcomplex · 17/12/2025 19:52

Can I add "do better" to my cancellation wishlist as well. 🙄

Hedjwitch · 17/12/2025 20:00

FFS.

IwantToRetire · 17/12/2025 20:09

Sorry the graphic is a bit huge, but this is how the LGBTQI+ media is reporting the story.

well the card was funny, but the reaction is even funnier

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 17/12/2025 20:39

Hang on, you can't change your gender to be anything?

How does that work?

Where is this rule book?

Taking the mickey out of arrant nonsense is unfortunately going to always follow arrant nonsense, whatever name you try and call it.

All of those, plus 'Educate yourself' from someone whose education has clearly not included critical thinking.

Good golly Miss Molly

Identifying as a journalist again, I see ...

Not seeing the transphobia here. Unless, of course, TRAs don't like how it spotlights the absurdity of "identifying" as anything.

Poor show by Emotional Rescue in pulling it.

I note that the sea of sexist birthday cards in which steam trains, golf, and cars are for dad and brother, but prosecco, dresses, and heels are for sister and mother, remain on the shelves. I like steam trains and my family have never been able to get me a card with them on unless it's one of those blank cards.

Ah, see that clearly means you are doing ‘ladying’ wrong, perhaps you should consider identifying as a man?!

Ermmm … isn’t choosing a gender that isn’t has nothing to do with actual sex exactly what people like Sophie Molly and his polycule do day in day out?

Dollymylove · 17/12/2025 22:24

Christ on a 3 wheeler bike is nothing sacred?

MarieDeGournay · 17/12/2025 22:34

What a pity there wasn't a grown-up at Sainsburys to say 'No it's not.'🙄

Brainworm · 17/12/2025 22:34

Surely the joke is about the multitude of identities that people now claim.

There is an endless parade of young people who proclaim that they identify as ‘gay’, ‘queer’, ‘disabled’, ‘autistic’……the list is endless. Why have they concluded that the card is transphobic?

‘disabled’, ‘autistic’

Unpopular opinion: if you don't have multiple-page diagnostic report, you can at most say "I think I might be...". You've not got the proof. And yes, I know about waiting lists, I was on one for years. But you still cannot claim to have a condition without a diagnosis.

I agree with you. My post was intended to highlight the multitude of phenomena that have, until recently, been understood as relating to material/ objective phenomena, being touted - by some- as ‘identities’. I understand the card to be making a joke about the ‘identity’ movement rather than targeting trans identities.

RainbowRainyDays · 17/12/2025 22:54

for suggesting that a person can choose their gender to be anything

But they can! Anyone can be any gender they like, the choice is infinite. It's a social construct so there are no limits.

Sexes? Two of them.

StolenCookie · 17/12/2025 23:08

Awful card. Glad it’s off the shelves.

PachacutisBadAuntie · 17/12/2025 23:13

People joking that they're identifying as something daft has been doing the rounds for a while now, they're a bit late objecting.

CraftandGlamour · 17/12/2025 23:24

"Not seeing the transphobia here. Unless, of course, TRAs don't like how it spotlights the absurdity of "identifying" as anything."

Well indeed. Whenever I've heard it, I just translated it to "thing I'm definitely not" and roll my eyes. I agree with a previous poster, the joke's been around a good while now. All they're doing, by making a fuss, is giving it extra mileage. Daft.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 17/12/2025 23:28

I like how the article includes a great big picture of the offending card - so more people will now have seen it than would have done if it had been left on the shelves. I suspect rather that that is the point though. FAFO.

Cam I add finishing sentences with "... And that's okay!"

Given the joke exists in many gaming communities and communities which you think would be massively TWAW I find it interesting.

I've personally heard it first hand used in places I REALLY thought I wouldn't.

There is almost a barely concealed contempt that has surprised me.

To see it becoming mainstream was only a natural progression.
