‘Transphobic’ Christmas card pulled from Sainsbury’s

IwantToRetire · 17/12/2025 19:47

The card was deemed offensive for featuring a cartoon of Dr Seuss’s Grinch character alongside the caption: “This Christmas, I’m identifying as a Grinch.”

The phrase “identifying as” in this context has been described by trans campaigners as an anti-trans dog whistle for suggesting that a person can choose their gender to be anything.

Brilliant card

Love your username! Just finished watching B99 for the third time, it's become my comfort TV 😊

Justme56 · 18/12/2025 10:13

Is Molly now policing gender? So cat gender and star gender aren’t real then either? Is there some sort of defined list that one has to chose from? 5 minutes ago there were 100 genders growing by the minute and according to AI it’s a descriptive term so there are an infinite number. Why do organisations give an ‘other’ option when asking people to describe their gender? What does this mean? So many questions.

thecalmsea · 18/12/2025 10:15

God the TRAs are narcissists to a man aren't they? It's all about them. Which 'identify as' clearly isn't, as we've got lots of other narcissists and silly young people identifying as lots of things, some of which have nothing to do with being trans.

This does make me laugh though, they were responsible for introducing all this silly language into common vocabulary and are now annoyed that everyone has adopted it and it's in a Christmas card.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/12/2025 10:40

I knew the fever was starting to break when radio 4 6:30 comedy started to include ‘identify as’ gags.

SabrinaThwaite · 18/12/2025 10:42

We all know that Sophie Molly isn’t actually offended.

He’s just identifying as being offended.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 18/12/2025 10:43

On another thread, I’ve just read that apparently trans people don’t like being asked their pronouns…cos it’s invalidating, or some shit like that.

Nothing’s ever good enough, is it?? 🙄

Augarden · 18/12/2025 10:48

Lmao!

"The phrase “identifying as” in this context has been described by trans campaigners as an anti-trans dog whistle for suggesting that a person can choose their gender to be anything."

But that IS what they think!

Ermmm … isn’t choosing a gender that isn’t has nothing to do with actual sex exactly what people like Sophie Molly and his polycule do day in day out?

Exactly what I thought.

My next T shirt - I identify as a young person.

I am well advanced in years but inside I feel exactly the same as I did in my twenties. And it's feels that count.

Funny you say that, I'm doing the opposite.

I didn't stand a chance of winning my age category at Parkrun, but now I identify as being 90 I'm top of the leaderboard 🏆

Also, remember to claim all that backdated state pension.

There is a legitimate use of ‘identify’ around disability isn’t there? (afaik the genderists appropriated the term). Some people don’t ’identify as being disabled’ - they have a particular condition but they explicitly don’t want it to define their identity iyswim. and/or (somewhat different thing) they may or may not ‘identify as disabled’. But forms relating to benefits should be about objective facts, not how someone feels about it. And obviously no one should be able to ‘identify’ as something they factually aren’t .

As someone with a serious physical disability I agree with you. I can't even use disability forums for support because they are flooded with twenty year olds 'identifying as' disabled. They are overindulged children driving a social backlash against disabled people, just as trans activists have tainted LGB spaces and reduced social acceptance of LGB people. Unlike these narcissists, people can't just shrug off disability or gayness when it becomes inconvenient or an uncool identity. I'm not trying to offend anyone I just don't know how to say it more clearly. I wish more people knew how many young wastrels there are living their entire lives online and coaching each other on how to exaggerate symptoms for benefits.

The genuinely disabled people I know are all working and raising families! People in wheelchairs while healthy 20 year olds are identifying as too disabled to work! Editing to add I don't know ANY disabled person who sees disability as an identity, it's just a legal description that allows a workplace to make certain accommodations or entitles us to apply for a blue parking badge or get help at an airport. People 'identifying as' disabled are the least disabled people in my experience, the rest of us just get on with things as best we can!

Teenagers do this too.
And my elderly parent.

FollowSpot · 18/12/2025 11:45

Well, this has triggered my Grinch identity.

FFS.

There was a thread on here a few years back about 'crazy things that your toddler has thrown a tantrum about today' (I can't recall the exact thread title) - and I still remember (and sometimes chuckle at) one poster who said "He asked me if he could have a yoghurt and I said Yes"!

It's cute when tiny children have made up their immature little minds that they will always be right and you will always be wrong; and they are determined to shout and scream at you, regardless of whatever you do or say.

It's astonishing sometimes to see just how many years some of the people who display such 'logic' have lived for, though...

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 18/12/2025 11:54

This comment too is grossly offensive, and I can't possibly see how anybody could ever find it funny........

And is a form of acceptance so really the trans lobby should see this as a win.

Surely the joke is about the multitude of identities that people now claim.

There is an endless parade of young people who proclaim that they identify as ‘gay’, ‘queer’, ‘disabled’, ‘autistic’……the list is endless. Why have they concluded that the card is transphobic?

Reminds me of stars in their eyes.
Tonight Matthew I’m going to be….

I'm so sorry this has happened to you, I see it as well, I've got a disability, not one which means I can't work, however it is hard and sometimes can be quite depressing.

My child is severely learning disabled and again, I find it hard when seeing the challenges and those who use it as a "group" to co-opt. It is insulting to those who live it each day.

To go back to the thread; the Christmas card was fine, it wasn't the least bit offensive and Sophie Molly needs to get a grip. But he won't as he's a narcissist and a really disturbed one at that, going by all the previous threads I've read about this individual. It's a shame Sainsbury's backed down they should have told them to back off.

Funnywonder · 18/12/2025 12:40

I just feel sorry for the Grinch who has had his green furry face erased from the card aisles of every Sainsbury’s in the country. I think that’s just blatant discrimination. Sophie Molly should hang his head in shame.

Since when has the phrase " I identify as" been solely the proviso of trans identities? I remember decades ago, bad jokes about lazy people identifying as go-getters or whatever. They really do think everything's about them.

It has been around for decades as far as I can remember.

This propriety claim to the language is nothing new though.

Loads and loads of cards rely on terrible hackneyed jokes, though - many of them weren't even funny in the first place. They've been making cards for the last 20 years or more with a huge picture of Delboy on them, saying "Have a triffic/cushdie birthday!!!" - and presumably people must be buying them.

There are also a lot of cards on display in shops that routinely use (or hint at) swear words and sexist themes - not to mention the fact that probably 75% of all 'humorous' cards rely on offensive ageist tropes, inviting you to laugh at the 'hilarious' idea that your friend who is 43 is akin to an elderly person, and thus naturally hopeless, past it and no use for anything anymore. I once even saw an inflatable zimmer frame in a card and tacky gift shop, so that middle-aged people can have a good old chuckle at the expense of disabled and elderly folk, by reducing their many everyday challenges in life to a cheap joke.

What they urgently need to do to redress this is to immediately repeal the law that makes it mandatory for people to buy any cards that they find objectionable in some way, instead of simply ignoring them and leaving them on the shop rack.

Edited

I always shudder when I see stuff like that...who's buying them? Or a Mrs Brown's Boys card with "Happy Feckin' Birthday' on it?

I got my mum a plain card that just said "I'm sorry" in black letters on the front this year. I wrote "(...that you are so old.)" underneath with a marker and hey presto!
