Gaines complained initially about competing with trans women but as she was deployed as a right wing political operative during Trump's campaign her story 'evolved' into one about sexual assault for being in the presence of an exposed trans women in the swim change rooms. All while ignoring the environment of sexual assault & abuse of her team mates at the time by her coach who she lauded as her close friend & mentor.

Gaines only claimed much later Thomas was exposing herself in the change rooms but her teams mates claim she was wrapped in a towel changing away from the others.

Whatever you think about women in sport, this appears to be another example of trans women being weaponised as a political cudgel rather than any real concern about protecting women given sexual abuse of women in sport is a common problem.

Likening her to Charlie Kirk is a dogwhistle and it is menacing.

She is fighting to keep men out of women's sports. That is where she and i intersect. The rest of the things she believes? not so much. She can be friends with who she likes. I can argue against pretty much all her beliefs with why i believe they harm women, and still support her on the one thing that she believes that i also believe.

Because i am a fully rounded adult who doesn't say "that's literal violence" et al when someone doesn't allign 100% with my beliefs.

I'd always thought she was probably a hard-core evangelical (judging by the information we have on her beliefs and the way she uses their kinds of phrases like 'spiritual warfare') who thinks women ought to obey their husbands ('complememtarianism' as they call it) and that gay people are fine as long as they stay celibate.

If she's not quite as strict as that, I'm very glad.

This podcast appeared in my feed today via an affiliated show… I know it is naive but it’s still hard to believe how blinkered - and unbearably smug the US liberal wing is on this. This is rubbish ( from the ‘Center for Investigative Reporting’, which I now wouldn’t trust to tell me if it was raining), but still enlightening… wondered if anyone else had heard it.

A six month dig to discredit Gaines - we’re not supposed to notice that everyone they’re trying to gotcha in this won’t dignify any of it - that finds her hiding (spoiler alert) nothing?

She's evangelical and they can seem a bit over-zealous to me. Talk of spiritual warfare makes me queasy.

Evangelicals also tend often to think women should obey they husbands (complementarianism as they call it), be very anti abortion, think gay people should stay celibate and various other things it's not surprising people on FWR would disagree with, not just woke progressives.

However, using this to discredit Gaines' GC heroism is disgusting. Supporting her on one issue doesn't mean you support everything or can't acknowledge her bravery and good work.

Also, to be fair to Gaines, while she seems on the conservative side of evamgelicalism, we don't know her views on any of the above apart from being very anti abortion.

What Torres uncovers here isn’t absurd. RG does have GOP platforms, a regular spot on Fox, is on the lucrative speaking circuit, has some odd Christian nationalist and anti-immigration views, and is a vocal Trump supporter. That might sit okay with you, but not me. I’m fine with her campaigning for keeping men out of women’s sport based on her experience, even if some memories of that experience may vary, but it is the political crusading from the results that is troubling.

But since you brought him up, yes, she is like Charlie Kirk. She was a friend, colleague and associate of his. She travelled around college campuses early on giving speeches with TPUSA arranged by Kirk, and the mode of her media operation of very similar to Kirk’s.

This was within the context of challenging AOC to a debate. AOC declined, challenging Gaines to get a “real job” (not the best reply IMO). Riley came back with this. While bragging about being a mom, Gaines managed to aim a dig at AOC about her lack of motherhood. (Additionally, I tend to believe ALL children require safeguarding, not just girls.)
