Welcome to The Bluestocking, the perfectly overblown, gloriously chaotic all-women’s pub where you can have a bit of a lie down if you need it.

Expect serious debates on musicals, cake and knitting, and whimsical musings on women’s rights and why the world’s on fire (again), all under the calm supervision of our support staff: gerbils, capybaras, and the occasional quokka on secondment.

The alcohol won’t get you drunk, the pastries won’t make you fat, but the conversation will digress, and that’s the point.

Remember to namechange before posting if you’re sometimes someone else.

Too right! Can't have a pizza without pineapple.

Swashbuckled · 28/11/2025 20:50

Pepperoni for pizza, pineapple for puddings. There, I’ve said it.

sorry swashy the only other place for pineapple is a vegetable or meat (not for me) dansak curry

Swashbuckled · 28/11/2025 21:27

It’s nice sliced, and fried in the air fryer.

Or in a pina colada. (Maybe…I don’t think I’ve had one of those since I was a student)

The worst thing is that, since Trader Vic's has now closed, there's nowhere in London for a werewolf to get a pina colada.

The gerbils are very sorry indeed!

I suppose pineapple in sweet and sour pork is ok because that’s meant to be sweet.
Pizzas aren’t - they’re all about umami and a bit of salt.

I’m not sure many birds are truly vegetarian, not British ones anyway.

This has obviously been playing in the back of my mind. Was on the way to get the week's shopping and I suddenly thought ducks! Except mergansers and shelducks, possibly shovellers. Then geese and swans. They probably eat some invertebrates, I think that's one way they pick up parasites, but as an incidental part of their main diets. Probably coots and moorhens but they might hunt invertebrates more deliberately when feeding on land or at the water's edge.

Me too. No meat for me, so I need the extra excitement of pineapple.

mallards are omnivorous - I’d be surprised if most ducks aren’t. From a quick perusal of wiki, I’d say that mallards didn’t get to be as numerous and ubiquitous as they are by being fussy eaters and their diet is limited only by the size of their bills and lack of teeth!

Mallards with teeth would be terrifying.

Very good in pork curry, is pineapple. Cuts through the fattiness of belly pork...

Yum.

Sultanas in curry are an abomination. Curry with sultanas on the side, different story.
Except...
There us a very delicious Afrikaans dish called bobotie, which involves lamb mince, onion, some curry spices, grated apple and sultanas, amongst other things.

Would recommend.

FarriersGirl · 29/11/2025 11:12

In Sicily they eat a lot of sardines and there is a famous recipe where the sardines are stuffed with fennel, mint, sultanas and pine nuts. I did try it despite being very dubious of fruit with fish and it was surprisingly good.

AsWithGlad · 29/11/2025 12:49

When DH and I were much younger, and before I was vegetarian, we used to eat out occasionally at a local restaurant. My favourite item was “Escalopes Manuela”, which was a flat piece of meat in a delicious sauce which included pieces of satsuma and pineapple.

Is it perchance time to start a new thread?

EdithStourton · 29/11/2025 14:22

Shall I do it? I've managed to dodge the job so far...

(My effort read, 'I've managed to doge the job so far', as though I'm delegating to a Venetian ruler...)
