Welcome to The Bluestocking, the perfectly overblown, gloriously chaotic all-women’s pub where you can have a bit of a lie down if you need it.

Expect serious debates on musicals, cake and knitting, and whimsical musings on women’s rights and why the world’s on fire (again), all under the calm supervision of our support staff: gerbils, capybaras, and the occasional quokka on secondment.

The alcohol won’t get you drunk, the pastries won’t make you fat, but the conversation will digress, and that’s the point.

Remember to namechange before posting if you’re sometimes someone else.

Alfred Hitchcock says Happy Thanksgiving

Was that before or after The Birds?

I don't know, but I'd like to think after. Hitch was a funny guy.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/11/2025 18:44

It's after, as he seems to have roasted one.

Enjoy Thanksgiving with your family, Britinme. The menus sounds wonderful - save me some of the leftovers from the sweet potato casserole and the pecan pie please😄

I've been busy most of the day - various household issues, I was going to write 'emergencies' but as I've told you all a million times, I never exaggerate😁
and I come back to find that the topic of the moment is.... vultures!

I'm going to lower the tone by quoting a t-shirt I saw, two vultures sitting on a dead tree, one of them saying
PATIENCE MY ASS, I'M GONNA KILL SOMETHING!

And there was a Gary Larson cartoon with two vultures circling over someone lost in the desert,

'It looks like he's going to make it to the water'
the other one is holding grand piano in its talons
' Oh no he's not'
😁

I have a vague memory of the original Disney Jungle Book with a bunch of vultures with Liverpool accents but I can't join it to anything.

Hedgehogsrightsarehumanrights · 27/11/2025 22:02

Hellooo everybody the vultures were supposed to be voiced by the Beatles but it never happened, they kept the theme of the mop tops though.

one of my all time favourite tunes is ‘i wanna be like you’ the jazz beat is sublime

I learned all the words to Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellenbogen by the Sea from a Pinky and Perky LP I was given for my birthday.

I was also very, very, very briefly acquainted with a member of a Katzenellenbogen family. I had to enter his details onto a database, his surname was one letter too long for the field. Completely ruined the song for me.

AsWithGlad · 28/11/2025 00:27

I need to search a lot more on MN tomorrow, but for now -

My outlook has been influenced in the past few years on here. I’ve been able to watch the three employment tribunals ‘live’ this year, and read Nick Wallis’s comments on the BFF case. So, although I don’t get out much (health) I managed to get to my first sex/gender related event in person this evening.

The title: Should legal sex/gender be abolished?
Utopianism, failure and the challenge of designing contentious law.

The speakers were Professor Davina Cooper and Dr Lena Holzer.

Professor Cooper mentioned FWS and also Mumsnet several times. She said one thread had attracted 500 comments. I can’t find that one yet, but a quieter one has led me to this article.

These events are not too difficult for me to get to, I must go again and research the speakers thoroughly before I do.

Also, possibly, make a “radicalised by Mumsnet” top to wear. With a cardigan over it.

I learned the words from Children’s Favourites on the Light Programme, or perhaps it was Two-Way Family Favourites.

Also, I never realised Katzenellenbogen could be a family name as well as part of a place name.

Do you remember the song about a Windmill in Old Amsterdam, which ends “There’s nobody there now, just a whole lot of mice” 😉

Simpler Times. Not Sad ones.

FarriersGirl · 28/11/2025 07:30

This one AswithGlad? I loved it as a child. I think it could be a gerbil favourite❤

lcakethereforeIam · 28/11/2025 09:00

I won a weekend trip to Amsterdam. I saw a mouse there too. It was de...well, let's just say the city may have great tits too.

MarieDeGournay · 28/11/2025 09:15

I'm only popping in occasionally as house repairs are taking up a lot of my time - a few other problems cropped when the builders came to deal with the 'presenting' one, so there's lots of people tramping through the house and jobs being scheduled and moving things from Room A to Room B and then then vice versa...

So we've had vultures, great tits doing things behind a sensitive material filter, Louis Prima in the Jungle Book, and now we're on to little mice with clogs on, obvious cousins of our own, our very own dear gerbils, and something I never thought I'd see written down: Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellenbogen by the SeaSmile

And Cake's post about great tits in Amsterdam is a classicGrin
Ta-ra for now!

This is a great opportunity to dig out my photo of a magpie making a tit of itself at a feeder😄
Not all tits are great, but they're all lovely, as I'm sure Fr Ted would say😁

The vultures look a little bit like the Beatles.
I also love I wanna be like you too-oo-oo!

Also: weirdly this response hadn't been posted and I wrote it yesterday, so I'm putting it in now, after everyone has stopped thinking about vultures. Am out of sync. Humph
