Welcome to The Bluestocking, the perfectly overblown, gloriously chaotic all-women’s pub where you can have a bit of a lie down if you need it.

Expect serious debates on musicals, cake and knitting, and whimsical musings on women’s rights and why the world’s on fire (again), all under the calm supervision of our support staff: gerbils, capybaras, and the occasional quokka on secondment.

The alcohol won’t get you drunk, the pastries won’t make you fat, but the conversation will digress, and that’s the point.

Remember to namechange before posting if you’re sometimes someone else.

Seriously ladies come spring the knitting snug needs a bloody good sort out.

I am not volunteering for this. When it's happened before I've ended up taking far too much yarn home with me, not all of which I'd left there.

AsWithGlad · 12/11/2025 17:15

Great jewellery, @GreenFriedTomato.

The bracelet conveys a more subtle message, too. It's a bit like 'happening' to wear a scarf in green, white and violet.

MyrtleLion · 12/11/2025 17:32

It's been a long day.

Pasting for the Sara Morrison tribunal. Calls from DB and DM about my late DB's son, then talking to lawyers trying to find out who has a copy of a court order from 13 years ago - no-one but the people who want it can go and chase it.

I need some gin. A lot of it.

But my wool arrived and the Wine Society's Christmas catalogue.

So some good things happened.

Hot chocolate bowser klaxon. Calling the hot chocolate bowser. Yesterday was bad, today was worse and tomorrow I have to hold on to my temper in a meeting. I think I should just mainline hot chocolate at this point.

I have got a scarf like that knitted for me by my DSis 💜

What wool did you get, Myrtle?

I know they won't be worn, but that looks lovely and warm!

Boiledbeetle · 12/11/2025 19:08

Maud is starting to get Battenberg withdrawal.

It's been 30 minutes since her last slice and "The Maud" just did a massive jump in bid price!

Maud now needs to go and reset her highest auto bid amount!

That's not even in the Toastie yarn! That's just Big Value Super Chunky.

I thought a picture of the link would come up. Here's the actual ball. The lighting is a bit low, but the wool is like velvet.

Eyes up sock. Looks at 5 sockless feet.

I reckon it would fit!

Hello VeraAtkins, sorry I wasn't here to welcome you when you popped in, I hope you're back again soon when things get really lively, usually in the most unpredictable way!
I don't go into the knitting snug myself, not being a knitter, but I think it probably looks something like this:

That's the staff knitting group.

The Bluestocking knitting snug was once a pristine and ordered joy. (See images from when it was first done up)

After quite a few moves it's been discovered that some gerbils are sleeping in the wool balls!

Maud has ordered a stiff brandy whilst she goes and rechecks her bank balance (and ups her maximum bid again).

She's making "Grrrrrrrrrrrr" noises in the Staff living quarters

Can you blame them for sleeping in the wool balls, if the wool looks as comfy as what Myrtle's bought?!

totally get it! They do like to keep snug and warm!

I was at a Range type shop in the summer and spent a lot of time petting the massive chunky chenille type "wool" like in Myrtle's photo, only it was much much bigger in size. I was trying to imagine the size of the knitting needles required. You would have had to use two broom handles.

Boiledbeetle · 12/11/2025 22:09

If Maud asks the WiFi in the pub is out.

I've had to turn it off briefly in order that she get some sleep. I've tried explaining she's still got a few days to go so if someone outbids her tonight she can bid again tomorrow. Plus she needs to pace herself.

But I'm not sure it's totally sinking in as she held onto the desk as Gwenda pulled her away from the computer.

Gwenda has taken her a hot chocolate and is reading her a bedtime story about pygmy pigs, quokkas and a giant wombat.

Somebody teach Maud about sniping, please!

AsWithGlad · 12/11/2025 23:10

I’m not sure the automatic sniping tools work for the WH auction.

Unless you know something I don’t?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/11/2025 23:17

It doesn't have to be automatic, Glad. Maud could just learn some patience & go in at the last minute for herself. It ends at 9.02pm next Monday - she should still be up at that hour. Bidding wars just drive up the price. But then it's all for charity, so shrugs.

AsWithGlad · 12/11/2025 23:33

Isn’t 9:02 past Maud’s bedtime?

If she’s staying up because she’s doing a late shift in The Bluestocking we’d have all to promise not to ask her for anything after about 8:50pm, so she can get settled and ready to bid.
