Welcome everyone. Wipe your feet, it's been wet out.

Don't forget to namechange before posting if necessary.

A stick blender would spare you some of the faff and washing up.

It's a game changer. So much easier (& safer) than pouring hot stuff into a liquidiser.

Last time I tried to blend something hot and liquid I spent a good hour cleaning up the mess.

Word of advice: the rubber ring at the bottom of a Kenwood blender from the 1960s does not, it turns out, last forever.

I now own two stick blenders. And I still haven't purchased a new ring for the Kenwood.

lcakethereforeIam · 04/11/2025 20:26

I used to have a blender. It was always leaking or stuff would fire out the top. I binned it. It was dangerous.

I'm sure a number of us (me included) are nodding ruefully at this!

A local shop on a community noticeboard had a flier advertising a foraging course illustrated with a picture of a beautiful fly agaric. Didn't give me any confidence in the person running the course.

I can ID half a dozen edible mushrooms. Unfortunately one of them now makes me throw up, which has put me off picking the others. I ate the buggers happily for years....

A shame, as there are field mushrooms flourishing on one of my regular walks, and there were puffballs there a month or two ago.

AsWithGlad · 04/11/2025 22:08

Thank you for sending Gesundheit home, Boily.

Is there somewhere she can be isolated there? We don’t want all our waiting staff missing work feeling poorly, poor things.

I don’t know why that sort of thing happens, Edith, but it does.

The Bluestocking is wonderful, though, as we can eat and drink anything without consequences.

AsWithGlad · 04/11/2025 22:16

I agree with the blender love. The years I’ve laboriously ladled cooked vegetables from my stockpot into the Robotchef on their way to becoming soup, when a cheap blender would have saved me so much work.

I passed on this wonderful discovery to DS a few years ago, and it turns out that he’d had one for much longer and never thought to mention it.

I have a nasty cough and a sore throat - kept me awake somewhat last night and I feel like crap today. I tested and it's not Covid, so just a regular buggering bug I guess.

It's a small local election here today and DH drove so I could go and vote, and I put a mask on. As it turns out, it was just as well I did. After voting (no on the voter ID thing, yes on the increased minimum wage thing, yes on the red flag gun law, and various people for various positions) as we were walking out there was a petition to ban boys from girls' sports, which both DH and I were happy to sign. A trans person (female to male I guess since there was an actual beard and male clothing and she wasn't tall and had fairly small hands) came up to the table where the petition was and begged me not to sign. I duly signed, whereupon the person said "shame on you". DH and I assured the person that we were absolutely not ashamed of holding this view, whereupon a phone camera was raised attempting to take a photo of me. I pushed it aside and said "You don't take photos of people without their permission and I don't give it" and DH backed me up on that and we walked away. No idea if a photo was taken showing my coat as I did that, but most of my face was covered by the mask. I feel a bit shaken waiting for something that would identify me being blasted over local social media, but I'm feeling so crap today anyway that it's no worse than that I guess.

It's illegal in the UK to take photographs in polling stations. Is that also a thing where you are? Because that could be complained about.

I don’t find my jug blender a faff. Maybe I learned some lab skills during my degree😂

Maud diverted her to the medical room just to be safe. The place would grind to a halt if its contagious.

That’s reassuring, thank you, @Boiledbeetlejuice

I hope the gerbils feel that they will be looked after when they need it, as they look after us.

😂I’ve seen ‘lion cut’ dogs in hot countries like Greece, never in our climate.

Glad i have shown up late and avoided any extra bugs, i have a cold at the moment and a rattle cough that is my own fault <resists a smoke>

AsWithGlad · 05/11/2025 00:17

My source in S America didn’t get the female-only equivalent of the toilet door sign, but did get this. I’m told there were arrows pointing left (m) and right (f).
It was in a museum featuring pre-Colombian artefacts.

Good point!
Gerbils, parasol mushrooms with my bacon and eggs for breakfast, please!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2025 08:58

ive got a furled parasol, and the tree is just because it’s a grey rainy morning and it cheered me up when I opened my photos and saw it, taken on Sunday.

I asked Bing to draw me a picture of a slippery protean weasel.

If one shows up at the door DO NOT LET IT IN, send it far far away, its name is Gender and the cuteness is deceptive in the extreme, it would eat all the gerbils.

Update on my health:

I SLEPT!!! beautifully last night for the first time in weeks. About 6/7 hours in total with one trip to the loo but straight to sleep afterwards. This made a huge difference.

Other issues like feeling sick and my guts misbehaving seem under control. Maybe my body is getting used to the antibiotics. I am still fighting fatigue though, but trying to stay awake so I can sleep better.

I'm in a certain amount of pain but I have been prescribed more codeine. It's frustrating for my DH as he has to drive me while I'm on opiates. Once I'm off them, I can drive as we have an automatic car and it's my left leg that is affected.

lcakethereforeIam · 05/11/2025 13:50

Fantastic news @MyrtleLion Sleep deprivation is a form of torture, so I'm delighted you got a good night.

Glad things re moving in a positive direction, Myrtle. Sleep and properly functioning digestion are so fundamental to health, I’m sure your healing will improve as they do.
