I'm happy to swing by for a quick one. I don't really do cocktails much, though the odd lemon slice or glace cherry is welcome.

Also, the drinking scene in London is not what it used to be since they closed Trader Vic's, which means there's nowhere in town where you can spot a werewolf drinking a pina colada.

Morning! Thanks for the new thread, Cake.
I've been raiding my picture archives recently - this one seems appropriate!

Hello all.
Nice to see you Sloth. And everyone else, of course!
Got any non alcoholic cocktails please? Maybe a "pruary special"?

DeanElderberry · 29/10/2025 07:31

Morning all, for the avoidance of doubt, it isn't Halloween until Friday, and we will be marking it in traditional fashion with divination games and ghost stories.

Special guest, Giant Wombat of course. She likes the stories where the ghost shows the impoverished family where to find the long-lost treasure that changes their fortune.

Just popping in for a quick hot chocolate before braving the day. I had forgotten. How LOUD a (frequently) irate 7 yr old can be.

Other than that, visit going well.

Can we take Sparp off the cocktail menu? No one likes it, it probably feels neglected and unloved, and would prefer a peaceful retirement.

EdithStourton · 29/10/2025 08:03

Also, thanks to cake for the new thread.
I've never started one, mostly because I can never think of a good title.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/10/2025 08:20

The gerbils were a little confused, they thought a coconut was a strange hairy beast (perhaps a harder, less fecund relative of tribbles?) and were puzzled how to milk it. But they’ve been pointed to the fridge where there’s a carton so your drink should be with you momentarily.

DeanElderberry · 29/10/2025 09:03

If the Tunnocks are still absent I suggest asking @Magpiecomplex, she's very good at taking care of shiny things, and if that fails, asking Wombat to help us with a ghost-guided dream.

Lovely decorations, thank you gerbils!
As well as the divination games [hazelnuts in their shells marked 'yes' and 'no' placed beside the fire, which one will explode first? who got the ring in the barm brack and will therefore be married within the year? or the sixpence wrapped in greaseproof paper, for riches, etc]
the gerbils should have the traditional games with apples because the fruits of the autumn, apples and nuts, used to be at the centre of Halloween fun.

Note I say the gerbils should play the games, I have a fair idea that none of us is going to enjoy plunging our faces into a basin of cold water to retrieve an apple we didn't really want to eat anyway..😄

DeanElderberry · 29/10/2025 09:31

And colcannon, very important, also with (optional) greaseproof-paper wrapped tokens.

and the ominous 'saucers', but I'll hold off on those horrors until after dark on Friday . . .

MarieDeGournay · 29/10/2025 09:31

Oh I've just noticed - please gerbils can we lose the spiders?? I'm frightened of spiders, and the recent trend for giant hairy black spiders on the walls of houses has me a nervous wreck - I actually had to ask the neighbours across the road to remove theirs a couple of years ago - it was right in my face every time I opened my front door, and it was huuuuuuuuge😱
They were v nice about it, and fortunately the kids had outgrown Halloween decos by the next year.

DeanElderberry · 29/10/2025 09:40

okay, I explained the situation as tactfully as I could to the spiders ('nonono, no anti-arachnid bigotry, not discrimination, never') and they have gone off to have their own party in the shed at the far end of the vegetable garden.

I remember dining at Lee Ho Fook many years ago (70s) but no werewolves appeared.

I had forgotten that song [Werewolves of London by Warron Zevon], hadn't hear it for a few decades, but the stand-out lyrics still stand out😀

SionnachRuadh · 29/10/2025 12:01

I'm very fond of Warren's music. There's a lot of dark humour in there, and a poetic view of the world. I'm not surprised Paul Muldoon collaborated with him.
