Experts fear that new types of misogyny and harassment – including spitting and pushing women over – are taking hold in the UK as they move offline

This type of targeted shoulder barging has a name: butsukari otoko. The term, which originated on the streets of Japan in 2018, describes a type of violence against women that is done in a crowded public space, most commonly train stations.

It could at first appear accidental, but it is actually intentional; it is gendered (men doing it to women), and done for misogynistic reasons.

Researchers fear it is gaining traction in the UK, spreading from online videos to real-life encounters. “It’s come out of a subculture that existed years ago in Japan,” says Megan Hughes, a researcher at the Alan Turing Institute’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security, which tracks online extremism. “It is something that’s been around for a long time, and people are now recognising it and are speaking out, but it’s a really difficult thing to track.

“They are sometimes subtle collisions, which are designed to appear accidental. They’re making victims second-guess intent or motive, and that then makes it really difficult for people wanting to report a crime. So it’s really hard for us to monitor.”

Street harassment isn’t new, but many believe it’s getting worse. A poll by Zencity, which surveyed 1600 women, found that 69 per cent said they had first or secondhand experience of women being ill-treated within the last 12 months; 75 per cent of women surveyed said violence and harassment was a serious problem and asked whether it had got worse in the last five years – 42 per cent agreed, and 30 per cent thought it was the same.

Man pushed woman off bus at Temple Meads

At around 4pm on Wednesday, March 25, an unknown man pushed himself against a woman

He followed the woman, aged in her 30s, before forcefully pushing her off the bus, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Men shouldn't be allowed out and women should be allowed to carry knives and pistols upon satisfactory completion of appropriate training in their handling.

The Bristol incident is particularly hellish given that the perpetrator actively followed the victim. I hope that there's CCTV to help identify him before he selects another victim.

I've just seen another e-bike incident in Fife. I think I might have mentioned the previous one upthread? A women in her 90s was knocked over and seriously injured in Lochore. That case has not yet gone to court.

This one is from my home town - in this case, two police officers were injured, but the teenage boy responsible kept revving his vehicle in spite of the fact that a police woman was under the wheels and yelling for him to stop.

The sentence is laughable - points on his non-existent licence and referral to the Children's Panel.

He thought it would be funny apparently. I'm sure his victim found it hilarious. Suspended sentence, some rehab and a fine.

I think part of this is just the fact that men don't treat us like delicate princesses nowadays. They still treat us better than they treat each other, mind.

I'm just trying to imagine the internal dialogue that a man who has justified this to himself has had.

It's kinda like the happy slapping craze of a few decades ago.

I don't think pushing a woman off a bus, into a road, or off a sea wall is just because 'men don't treat us like delicate princesses'. It's violent, thuggish, misogynistic behaviour and should be punished harshly.

There's a long space between treating women like delicate flowers and shoving them into oncoming traffic. Most men who exist in the middle seem quite capable of treating women as they themselves would wish to be treated. The ones at the violent end of that line should be in prison.

There is some awful rhetoric out there on SM, and reports like that from the poster upthread about a recent deterioration of her workplace regarding working with male colleagues, far from the first, alongside this recent spate of incidents, does strongly suggest, most worryingly, that things are actually getting worse.

That has never happened to me, but I was shoved in to a phone box as an older teen (17?) and justled around roughly by half a dozen young men. It was in a busy bus station too. Nobody did anything about it.

Honestly, I'm starting to get really annoyed at the sentencing in this country. Violent crime, rape, nothing. Shoplifting, the police don't even come in the first place. But dodgy tweets? Prison for you.

Obviously I wasn't in the court or privy to the deliberations of the jury but I was aghast when I read the article. It reminded me of the other recent case of a 16 yo boy who stabbed and killed a 9 yo girl but wasn't even found guilty of manslaughter.

Exactly. I'm 60 now and have never been treated like a delicate princess in my entire life. But in the last ten years or so casual male aggression in public places has definitely increased. When I'm out and about I'm almost always alone, so that makes me even more of a target. There is no way that man on the IoW thought it was funny, except to men who hate women, that is.

An ex army bloke with royal connections was recently interviewed or arrested , haven’t seen any follow up, but at least case still open?
