Men are pushing women over in the street - as a trend

Experts fear that new types of misogyny and harassment – including spitting and pushing women over – are taking hold in the UK as they move offline

This type of targeted shoulder barging has a name: butsukari otoko. The term, which originated on the streets of Japan in 2018, describes a type of violence against women that is done in a crowded public space, most commonly train stations.

It could at first appear accidental, but it is actually intentional; it is gendered (men doing it to women), and done for misogynistic reasons.

Researchers fear it is gaining traction in the UK, spreading from online videos to real-life encounters. “It’s come out of a subculture that existed years ago in Japan,” says Megan Hughes, a researcher at the Alan Turing Institute’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security, which tracks online extremism. “It is something that’s been around for a long time, and people are now recognising it and are speaking out, but it’s a really difficult thing to track.

“They are sometimes subtle collisions, which are designed to appear accidental. They’re making victims second-guess intent or motive, and that then makes it really difficult for people wanting to report a crime. So it’s really hard for us to monitor.”

Street harassment isn’t new, but many believe it’s getting worse. A poll by Zencity, which surveyed 1600 women, found that 69 per cent said they had first or secondhand experience of women being ill-treated within the last 12 months; 75 per cent of women surveyed said violence and harassment was a serious problem and asked whether it had got worse in the last five years – 42 per cent agreed, and 30 per cent thought it was the same.

Carry your keys out

I carry "stunt keys" as I worry about someone knocking my real keys out of my hand and then I'm locked out. Or scrabbling around to find them, which is a whole new danger.

This thread is another excuse for some man and TRA bashing

Well, should we not give credit where credit's due? If they do not want to be mentioned in the same breath as male violence, they should not be perpetrators of it.

Sidebeforeself · 13/08/2025 09:53

That’s not my point. Nobody should be doing it so “ men do it more often” doesn’t appease me . And a woman or women can be just as physically dangerous depending on the circumstances . This isn’t about showing who is worse for doing xyz. It’s abominable behaviour that

Why did your sentence suddenly end? Run out of ai tokens?

The jogger who tried to push a woman under a bus on Putney Bridge was never found. It is only a matter of time before a woman is killed by this.

I was seven months pregnant, very noticeably so when a group of men early twenties when one of them pushed me onto the road in front of a bus in Clapham Junction, that was 26 years ago. Somehow I managed to sidestep, I was too shaken and frightened to have said anything then at the time.

A vicious assault by a man on a woman on a night out in Cork city centre last November was shown on RTE's Crimecall yesterday, it has been all over X since. The man struck the woman walking by in the face with his elbow, breaking an orbital bone and knocking her unconscious. The footage is quite violent, so watch with caution.

Bloody hope they catch the little shit.

On ‘Crimecall’ after roughly 3 months. I suppose it is safe to air it now. Enough time under the bridge to give that vicious thug an advantage.

That is awful and definitely not normal behaviour, by someone who hates women. so obviously deliberate.
I found the following, extremely disturbing article about "Incel behaviour".

"Incels’ belief system leads them to their ultimate conclusion: men’s violence against women is justified.
Incel forums are full of men discussing, joking, and threatening violence. Incels argue for the keeping of women as sex slaves, the massacring of women and girls, and other forms of violence. They collectively inspire and enact violence both online and off."

The attack in Ireland looks as it possibly could be a religiously motivated attack; the perpetrator’s motivation could be that the woman was wearing western clothing.

There is more than one reason why men hate women other than on-line based incel culture.

Unsure. There's no particular reason to pick her out of all the other people. And he's not exactly in flowing robes himself.

The utterly casual, yet evidently powerful, swipe suggests he's practised this manoeuvre and just did it to her because she happened to be the right position.

Oddly, it reminds me of another video I saw last year - I think it was American - where a chap punched a male jogger in the face with this exact same, meaningless, casual approach. Carried on walking, didn't break stride. The victim died (some fluke of the way he fell).

It's frightening. This type of crap answers my reservations about ubiquitous video recording. The Irish one's very good quality, I hope it's led to the bastard getting caught.

The guy in the Irish video, is quite obviously Asian, possible from a Middle Eastern/Pakistani background. My wife and I went to Salzburg in 2017 and went for a drive to Zell am Zee on one very hot day. To our surprise there were quite a lot of Muslims there. It was noticeable, that despite the heat, all the guys were in short sleeved shirts and chinos and all the women were in full, black, head to foot burkhas. My wife, who was born in Iran, was shocked by it.

The Austrian village that's a Muslim holiday hotspot – in pictures

Ten years ago, the tourist board of Zell am See in Austria made a terrific call. According to the Qur’an, paradise looks like a lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains – so they started promoting their village to travel agencies in the Middle East

When i was 15 at a roller disco (do they still do those?!), an older lad came up behind me and swiped my legs out from under me with his leg. I landed on my coccyx and it really hurt. I went and sat down and he came over to 'apologise' and proceeded to try and chat me up 🙄 This was a long time ago (early 90s) but I've never forgotten how shit it was that someone thought assaulting someone was an effective way of meeting girls.

Edited

Sorry a bit off topic, but this reminds me did anyone watch the tv show called Curfew about some time in the future when there is a curfew for men.

I assumed it would be so crass in its "feminist" perspective that I would be sitting shouting at the tv.

But maybe it was good.

Could do with something positive.

Absolutely. And not unlike TRAs feel they have this very special halo of rightness as they are so green they can do whatever they want.

On the pavement.

On a pedestrian crossing.

Me too. Loads of them seem to think that traffic lights and pedestrian crossings don't apply to them.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 07/03/2026 13:20

I watched ‘The Curfew’ on channel 5, I thought it was really good.

There was a trans woman in it. The curfew didn’t apply to them.

Not sure how a real curfew would ever work, surely men would start identifying as women?

SisterTeatime · 07/03/2026 13:44

Some of these stories are so awful. Someone tried to push me off a crowded tube train in rush hour many years ago. I was already jammed in, braced and holding on so it had no effect, and without really thinking I said loudly so the whole carriage could hear ‘stop trying to push me off the train’. But if I hadn’t been holding on I’d just have been pushed straight backwards onto the platform flat on my back.

DontStopMe · 07/03/2026 15:48

Not as bad as other people's experiences, but today I was punched in the arm by a teenage boy who said it was because I'd pushed past. It was a crowded place and at worst I brushed past. Apparently he wouldn't have punched me if I'd said 'excuse me'.

WearyAuldWumman · 07/03/2026 18:18

That's terrible. Did anybody else say anything

Would hate to think this type of physical response to women being out and about in public isn't going to increase.

No one said anything. It's quite possible nobody else even noticed. I assumed he was out with his family as it wasn't a teenage boy sort of place and presumably he was just being a nasty little squit because he didn't want to be there.

Well that is very understanding of you but would a teenage girl have done the same if she didn't want to be there?

Suspect not.

It starts so early.

And also saw a video on FB of a man kick a woman in the back down some stairs (the video was being referenced by someone responding to comments that 'men don't hate women'. The man's friends just laughed and she broke her arm.)
