Men are pushing women over in the street - as a trend

Experts fear that new types of misogyny and harassment – including spitting and pushing women over – are taking hold in the UK as they move offline

This type of targeted shoulder barging has a name: butsukari otoko. The term, which originated on the streets of Japan in 2018, describes a type of violence against women that is done in a crowded public space, most commonly train stations.

It could at first appear accidental, but it is actually intentional; it is gendered (men doing it to women), and done for misogynistic reasons.

Researchers fear it is gaining traction in the UK, spreading from online videos to real-life encounters. “It’s come out of a subculture that existed years ago in Japan,” says Megan Hughes, a researcher at the Alan Turing Institute’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security, which tracks online extremism. “It is something that’s been around for a long time, and people are now recognising it and are speaking out, but it’s a really difficult thing to track.

“They are sometimes subtle collisions, which are designed to appear accidental. They’re making victims second-guess intent or motive, and that then makes it really difficult for people wanting to report a crime. So it’s really hard for us to monitor.”

Street harassment isn’t new, but many believe it’s getting worse. A poll by Zencity, which surveyed 1600 women, found that 69 per cent said they had first or secondhand experience of women being ill-treated within the last 12 months; 75 per cent of women surveyed said violence and harassment was a serious problem and asked whether it had got worse in the last five years – 42 per cent agreed, and 30 per cent thought it was the same.

The jogger who tried to push a woman under a bus on Putney Bridge was never found. It is only a matter of time before a woman is killed by this.

I think of that case often. I can't believe he was never found.

Greyskybluesky · 15/06/2026 17:21

"The suspect was detained today at his £1.4 million home in west London.
A director at a private bank, he is a decorated former British Army officer who served in several major conflicts."

That description should be fairly identifiable, surely...?

Greyskybluesky · 15/06/2026 17:29

There's an interesting thread over on Chat, lots of speculation including about "changed loyalties".
I really hope they get this bastard, whoever he is.

I was going to add this, so glad someone found the thread!

Yes it good news. But do wonder whether someone, or more than one, knew all along it was him, and only because of some sort of falling out or whatever they have so much too late, reported him

Thank goodness the woman wasn't hurt. And thank goodness the bus driver reacted so quickly and was able to avoid her.

Every day there is a story that just makes me think men shouldn't be allowed out without supervision.

Oh wow. I’ve never forgotten that incident, oddly I was thinking about it yesterday!

So was I. No idea why but it just popped into my head. How strange. Really hope they've got the right man this time.

I'd be very surprised if one or more people didn't know. After all, the images were pretty clear and I imagine most early morning joggers have their preferred routes. Hard to believe that no-one twigged who it was. Closed ranks, I guess, to protect him.

IwantToRetire · 15/06/2026 21:08

I hadn't realised until I saw an item on the news that this despicable male, actually had the nerve to turn round and run back past the woman as she lay on the ground. She tried to get him to stop but he just ran past her.

The arrogance.

That woman was so fortunate: inches away from death or brain-damage. Well done Mr Bus-driver!

"Before he hit this woman, there was another man who was actually walking [across the bridge]. He didn't push this guy, but he pushed this lady.

"And the fact that he didn't stop, to actually just check on the woman, because if it was accidental a person like you and me would stop and say 'oh sorry', try to check what happened."

What an arrogant pig. I've had the misfortune of coming across men like this but rarely thankfully. He must have deep seated woman/mummy issues. He will have behaved this way before and since I'm sure. Maybe he was questioned about another more recent act of violence and came up as a possible match?

moto748e · 15/06/2026 22:21

Yeah, the more you think about it, the less likely it seems that this was a first offence.

mrshoho · 15/06/2026 22:46

What I don't get is that news agencies are reporting he is a millionaire banker, links to royalty etc but why do this before his name is eventually released if he is charged? As a result a name has been plastered all over X.

GarlicLitre · 15/06/2026 22:59

While freely admitting I know nothing about these ludicrous privacy injunctions work, could he have had one granted against his name being published in connection with this incident?

mrshoho · 15/06/2026 23:09

I don't know, he seems only to have been arrested so far. We'll see if he is charged whether his name is released. I don't know how they could keep his name a secret if charged.

Would he have any right to keep his name private if charged? We are supposed to have open justice in this country. Just because he’s a rich entitled fucker doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to be tried in public.
What a piece of shit.

Last year at a concert for a band loved by teenage girls. They’d queued for hours to get to the front by the time the band came on. All excited and knew every song word perfect. I was there with my two girls. As soon as the band started these two huge blokes started shoulder barging to the front - drinks being spilled and one girl got pushed over. I told them to stop pushing women around and got called a miserable old bitch. Too loud to come back with an articulate response!
Not really what this thread is about except just another example of men feeling free to literally push women out of their way.

Impact on Future Proceedings: If excessive or sensationalized pre-charge publicity takes place, it risks causing a "bandwagon effect," influencing potential witnesses, or creating a hostile public environment. In highly publicized cases, this can lead to defense lawyers making an early application to stay the proceedings as an abuse of process, arguing that the suspect can no longer receive a fair trial. www.cps.gov.uk

The press and media have not directly named the person but have leaked enough to identify him. It's almost as if they are going over and above to jeopardise any future trial.

That is exactly what this thread was started for.

In the earlier posts some of the experiences are just startling.

Its only because of this recent police action that it appears to be about one particular instance.

So if you haven't seen the earlier posts, have a look.

He has been done for drugs too!

DrBlackbird · 16/06/2026 18:52

I would think there would little appetite from the British public to allow this man to walk away Scot free. Look at the outrage over the three teen boys. Consider how angry the public is about Andrew the ex prince. I seriously hope that there is no deliberate strategy to jeopardise a trial. And is the person on bail?

mrshoho · Yesterday 19:15

So he's been bailed while investigations continue. Also as pp mentioned class A and B drugs possession. Don't suppose he'll be returning to his job anytime soon.

The most recent postbag episode of the Double Jeopardy legal podcast is interesting. They talk about the public’s growing desire for tougher sentences to centre the victim(s) and exact revenge vs the justice system’s role to punish but also rehabilitate.

I’ve had this, mostly from young men who seem very angry at a middle aged woman daring to take up space. I am slow as partially disabled, and walk with a stick, and I have even had the stick kicked out from under me before being knocked over and sworn at. It was terrifying, and gave me a feeling of vulnerability that simply being disabled hadn’t. There are now some parts of London that I simply won’t go to as it has happened more than once, and I daren’t risk it. It makes me so angry.

I'm so sorry this happened to you 💐

Interesting if it’s the same guy…with a history of targeting women in the street.

I recall being on a long haul overnight flight once. The cabin crew stopped their service and dimmed the lights for everyone to go to sleep. The man sat behind me would not allow me to recline my seat to sleep for the entire overnight portion. He kept pushing my seat back into the upright position. I’d react much differently now as a menopausal woman, than I did in my 20s.
