Welcome to the Bluestocking Arms, the home of good company, excellent drinks and delicious cakes which magically have no irksome contents like gluten or sugar or calories or the kind of alcohol that causes problems - but you wouldn't knowSmile

Food and drink are served by a keen staff of gerbils, and other animals such as capybaras, quokkas, etc., also fulfil vital roles, while looking cute AF.

New Bluestockingers always welcome.

We call it sticking stitch in English?

where the f is the laugh emoticon when I need it?

DeanElderberry · 12/06/2025 08:25

Anyhow, that made me move my arm, which displaced the immense back animal who has immobilised me for the last half hour, so breakfast beckons.

Bloody autocorrect!! Stocking… not sticking!!

I know, I miss the laughing emoji. Really don’t understand why it has been removed. People can just as easily reply with a sarcastic laughing emoji in thread if they feel moved to, so it seems pointless to take it away.

Plus, I’d like a 😮 and a 😢 one added…

and a Hard Stare

that would be very busy during half term and study weeks

not in the Bluestocking

Sammy,

But the vid is better

I remember Sammy! Wickla's answer to Fungi the Dolphin!

I thought it was a pity when he started climbing out of the water, creatures like seals lose their je-ne-sais-quoi when they leave their natural element.

It was also worrying, because seals are fierce wild animals - the little kids who used to line the quayside watching him in the water would be potential lunch to Sammy on land😦

Sammy had the advantage of being an attractive-looking animal: harbour seals are less 'cute' than grey seals who have round faces and button eyes, and I've seen lots of harbour seals who are a dirty mottled colour and only their mothers could think they were cute. Smile

Sammy was black and shiny in the water, and had lovely intelligent inquisitive eyes.

The squares should be knitted stocking stitch (knit one row, purl the next), in honour of the Bluestocking. Some knit only squares are also satisfactory. I would recommend posting any questions on the Wolley Hugs thread about it.

Thank you - was just looking for the correct thread.

Are the gerbils all present and correct? None of them off to Kilrush and the Globe of Death?

Been brushing up on my knitting as I think it’s been years since I did it. These are easy/intermediate using just knit and pearl! Done 5 squares for my DD’s blanket. Am thinking the designs will work well in the finer wools that have been suggested for Squashie’s?

these are beautiful and will work perfetcly in the wools for a woolly hug (knitted squares for them in the past)

Sorry, long time lurker, just popped in for a quick cup of tea and thought I could answer the question

steppemum · 12/06/2025 11:43

and yes plain squares can have patterns on them. It gives the blanket texture and they usually sit flatter than plain stocking stitch.
But stocking stitch diagonally works very well too.

They were all bright eyed and raring to go first thing this morning.

Things have gone down hill since then. I think they will need an early early night tonight.

Team Harbour seal here. They're much cuter than grey seals. They're smaller and they've got cute doggy faces. I much prefer them to the flat roman-nosed faces of the greys.

Can't we manage without the gerbils? At least for a few hours. They can have a siesta.

SionnachRuadh · 12/06/2025 12:03

I definitely prefer seals to swans. Swans are the hoodies of the avian world.

Welcome, do stay!

Can I just apologise for the appalling state of Gingham this morning. She's usually so prim and proper with impeccable service skills. It turns out she went to the after after after party last night and drank to much gin (We've all been there!)

I've taken her off shift and sent her for a shower and some sleep.

It's no good there are gerbils snoring everywhere and the pool table is unusable, there's at least ten sleeping on it instead of cleaning up yesterday pea competition.

I've sent them all to bed and got the quokkas to come in.

@steppemum ah, heres Queenie with your replacement tea.

I definitely prefer seals to swans. Swans are the hoodies of the avian world.

Except at Abbotsbury, where the swans nest in close proximity to each other and are so habituated to humans that you can walk among the nests even when they have cygnets and they don't bat an eyelid.

(I had to look up swans' eyelids, as I half-remembered that there was something unusual - they have a sort of extra eyelid, a nictitating membrane, used underwater, apparently.)

JuneShellChangeHerTune · 12/06/2025 12:30

Re stitch pattern for plain squares - yes, any pattern is usual. I take the point about stocking stitch for the blue stocking: that’s a matter of taste but we could make squares which include stocking stitch but it’s not necessarily the same all over.

Welcome! Would you like something off the trolley, to go with that coffee?

"Can yer see it on the trolley?" - to quote the genius, Victoria Wood.

Hello Madison and welcome.

That sweet trolley gave me shades of Victoria Wood..." Is it on trolley? "

Great minds, @FuzzyPuffling!

CautiousLurker01 · 12/06/2025 08:09

Do you know, I just assumed we could do patterns? Maybe I need to find the original thread and post to ask? Which colour square did you mean - the pale grey/1st on left? I can post the knitting instructions a bit later, if you like?

Patterns are welcome as far as I am aware, @CautiousLurker01 - as well as textured stitches (cables, moss stitch etc) for single coloured squares.

MyrtleLion · 12/06/2025 12:41

Needles arrive on Saturday. Wool arrives Saturday to Monday. I was silly. I didn't order them while on holiday because one other item would have arrived while I was away. So that item will arrive today and the knitting accessories will be late.

I should have ordered them to arrive today and then placed the other order. My brain is woolly!
