Here at the Bluestocking there's a place for all women. A break from Reality, and many laughs and stories to share. Have your fill of Tunnocks bars and tea cakes, sing feminist anthems, drink as much beer or gin or hot chocolate as you desire. It won't make you fatter or drunken but oh, it's fun. Sit in the garden with our Lion resident or the Quokkas and Capybara. Express your opinions loudly in Pedantry Corner. Ask for whatever you fancy to be served by our obliging Gerbil staff. Come in, all women, welcome!

That’s not a pub though…looks more like a loo queue. And it’s snuck in a row of suspiciously masculine shoe toes.

Those are the feet of all the blokes who have already been to the loo and are spending the interval sitting down and drinking.

I have bitter memories of a long-ago visit to the Royal Opera House (to see the ballet, I don't get on with opera) when a friend and I spent the WHOLE BLOODY INTERVAL going to the loo.

And however much sugar and cream you serve it with?
<hopeful>

(And yes, it was very delicious!)

Fruit totally cancels out sugar and cream. Always has and always will. I have it on good authority.

do any of these AIs now keep up with current events? If so maybe you can tell it we’re in the U.K. and so are allowed single sex spaces which are inclusive of all ages, colours and sizes of women but without any males at all.

I bet if you ask it to create an image of various other protected characteristic groupings it wouldn’t insist on ‘inclusivity’.

Edited

I have got the hump with it. Arguing with a bot isn't very rewarding ... it's so oily when it apologises ... then nothing changes. It can apologise until it's blue in its theoretical face but that doesn't work as a strategy, because it doesn't then carry out the changes you've asked it to make. It will often say (nasal, weaselly style voice) oh I can't make that now, I'm having trouble making what you required, I'm sorry I can't generate that image, would you like me to write something for you that's so much better than you can write yourself as I am the Master of flowery prose?

When it offers to write something for me, I am enraged immediately. The whole point of generating images is that you have to write something that describes that image and then AI makes the image. If I wanted it to be rewritten I would rewrite it! See I'm already cross!

Fa la laa, going to the garden to eat worms ...

That’s lovely @MarieDeGournay

How old would Emma T be now? (Part of me is hoping she might read it here 😊)

She'd be in her late 20s, Swash.
Her full name was on the poem but I just used her initial.

It would be lovely if she knew that her 8-year-old wisdom was still appreciatedSmile

FuzzyPuffling · 19/04/2025 21:31

I am.happy to remain in blissful ignorance of the vagaries of AI, and will just admire all the pretty pictures you make!

Swashbuckled · 19/04/2025 21:31

I agree it can be difficult.
Frustrating and inconsistent.
Awkward.

But then it produces something perfect and I forgive it and hope it will always be better.

God, I’m in an abusive relationship with AI.

I've never even tried AI, partly on principle, partly because I'm lazy, but also because I firmly believe that there's no end to the daft things somebody has already put up on the internet.

For example: somebody once mentioned a friend of theirs had been attacked by a squirrel in Hyde Park , and there was a response which suggested that squirrels weren't very scary.

I googled 'armed squirrels' - don't ask why! - and found that there's a guy who poses [dead, unfortunately] squirrels as Japanese warriors and posts the photos on the internet.
Who needs AI with people like that in the real world?😆

I found something lovely to share with you - I've been sorting out papers [😬my nemesis, along with books] and I found a poem that was published in my local newspaper when I lived in London. I liked it so much I cut it out and kept it, and I'm so happy to have found it:

POEM
Love we should give,
Love is life,
Give it to family, pets, friends.
That love should never end.

If somebody dies,
Family, pets or friends,
If you have love,
They will always be with you.

If you feel down,
Friends have fallen out,
If you have love,
They are still your friend.

If you fall down,
Hurt your knee,
If you have love,
Your knee feels better.

So that is love.
So important.
Try to find it,
If you have none.

by Emma T, aged 8
'In memory of my dear cat Jessie, who has just recently died'

A lovely simple poem. Thanks Marie - Sometimes the awful task of sorting out papers (my nemesis too), brings something tender and wise to the surface. I mean more often it doesn't, but you know. The one in 1000 times when it does .... Flowers

I was also able to threaten another squirrel-denier with having their house torched in revenge:

That image reminds me of those Medieval manuscripts with murderous insane rabbits.

Squirrels are not to be trifled with, however, I've been peed on by one, from a great height.

Ok. Just been to see My Master builder with Ewan McGregor. He and cast generally were excellent BUT… as much as I am feminist to the last strand of my DNA, the play had a weak story arc and, basically, ALL men are shits and every woman was a victim of the patriarchy. No redemption arc. No women gaining insight. No women discovering her inner power or, even, recognising that she actually has agency. No. The women were released by Main Character plunging to his death from the peak of his architectural construct. Feel so utterly fucking robbed (the tickets cost more than£200ea) but as tho the female playwright does not get it. Women don’t want to be liberated bcos bloke fortuitously dies. We want to find our power. And then exert it. Even DH is bemused. The least he could have done was whip out his fucking lightsaber l!!

What a blistering review. I'm so sorry it was rubbish. I admit I didn't know what you were talking about in your first post. I vaguely thought you'd gone to see the Minecraft movie.

I've heard there's not much women discovering their inner power in the Minecraft movie either😂

CautiousLurker01 · 19/04/2025 22:44

@icakethereforeiamI hate that I’ve had to slate it. But, really? I am totally for men abusing power getting their comeuppance, but the underlying narrative was that women are powerless and can only be freed if we eradicate men. I dont want to erase or eradicate, i want to coexist on something approximating equal footing. I want men to respect the women in their lives (professionally and domestically). I want them to want women to succeed and achieve alongside them. I dont won’t them to literally or figuratively lay prostrate at the alter of woman … or for women to need saving by men or circumstance.

How disappointing. It sounds as though the playwright took the bones of Ibsen's play to write the new play, but left the heart and soul behind.

£200+ for a ticket! The play is 140 minutes long, so it cost £1.43 per minute! That represents a LOT of ice cream 😳

Lol agree. I now feel compelled to read Ibsen’s play to fathom what the playwright in this one was trying to do. First time I’ve been to a play that didn’t have the over the top, performative ovation and multiple curtain calls. Everyone just left…

ifIwerenotanandroid · 20/04/2025 00:09

Ibsen's The Master Builder is the reason DH & I haven't seen any live theatre in decades. Dear me, it was unending. And dull. That was the end of it for both of us.

inkymoose · 20/04/2025 00:12

Just caught a glimpse of the copilot image it made of me standing in the garden looking huffy (posted above) - and realised it had the cheek to say this:

"Here’s your updated image with a fully antler-free female moose. I’m glad you liked the previous version—hope this one brings it even closer to your vision!"

Fully antler-free female moose?!

thought I'd ask it to redo the picture, but I forgot the fundamental rule of asking AI for anything: don't mention the thing you don't want. Six tries later it still kept giving me male moose with enormous antlers.
Eventually it decided it couldn't generate any more images.
