Continuation of Thread 9.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Jeez, that's quite a hard read, it's very sinister, thank goodness sane heads prevailed here. Despite numerous women being arrested previously, at least we have Maya's ET Appeal and the FWS Scotland judgment.

I remember their battles to get it set up - I think there were some discussions about it and the possibility of doing similar on the feminism thread on the Old Place. Nice to see an update.

Not the same as it's not a women-only caper but there's a great chain of homes for seniors in France called Domitys, I've just looked it up and apparently they have about 150 sites in France plus some in Belgium. The apartments are really nicely laid out, generally have a balcony, and the homes usually have a small swimming pool and sauna. The interesting thing about them is that they rent spare apartments out like hotel rooms. We've stayed in at least three different places in France for a night in one of these residences on our way to somewhere else. The upshot is that the long term residents get to see and interact with new people - including families with their kids, and their dogs, etc. - all the time. They always have a nice atmosphere about them, quite lively and feeling like part of the community rather than a place to stick old people away out of sight. Sorry for the diversion, but this story just brought it to mind, would recommend to anyone passing through France and looking for an overnight stop.

Thanks, that was interesting and confirmed what we've been saying. It was good to read the actual, real experiences of those who've been through that mill.

Unison (the union) have a post up on both x and bluesky asking members to support them in opposing the FWS judgment. On X it has 1.5k responses pretty much universally telling them to fuck off; on bluesky it has 20 responses which have already degenerated into infighting about what is transphobia.

Unions are just hopeless, aren't they?

Watching the women's Challenge Cup Final, and Wigan are putting a great show in the sunshine, well on the way to the first part of a double if the men's team can see off Hull KR this afternoon.

Saw one in the wild while I was out shopping this morning.

He was about six and a half foot tall wearing a sun dress and sandals. He had broad manly shoulders and big manly feet.

Changing gender is never going to change the size of your body. He's never going to be able to reduce his height, build and body dimensions to an average woman size. It doesn't matter what he wears, he's always going to look like a man in a dress. I just don't understand how they think we must believe they are women when in cases like this, clearly they're not.

He was also prancing around in a girly way doing hair flicks and doing coquettish smiles at men. I mean we all behave like that when we're shopping in Boots don't we? 🙄

The trouble with casting trans actors in detective dramas is that if someone is introduced as a character's mother, and plainly isn't and could never have been anyone's mother, you spend the rest of the episode wondering whether it's a plot point or whether we're meant to pretend he genuinely passes.

I've started reading The Three Body Problem. It's not totally grabbed me yet which might explain why my mind wandered to the gold discs that were sent with the Voyager spacecraft. The information included outline drawings of a male and a female. No non-binary nonsense. Apparently they were a big squeamish about including actual nude pictures. What information would be on these discs if they were to be encoded today? Are the Voyager spacecraft transphobic?

I rather enjoyed 3BP. It takes a wee minute to get going, but worth it. I then read everything by Liu Cixin (that he's published in english)

I watched the first season on Netflix, there are two more to come - a friend has watched the Chinese version which is apparently very true to the books - 30 episodes and very detailed, etc. Might have to give that a whirl.

I've finished book one. I enjoyed it enough to want to read the next in the series. There was a bit about the way the ETO mostly found it's home with the elite that didn't half remind me of...something🤔

I watched the Western version. Fwir I thought it was a bit of a curate's egg. I'd be interested in seeing the Chinese version, but not before I've finished the books.
