Women's rights general conversations - Thread 10

Continuation of Thread 9.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

That's fabulous!

I also very much enjoyed the subtle stiletto of 'if the documents have been presented in a timely manner and good order'.

It makes me very happy to think that NC&CE discovered the Fifer. I hope they enjoyed him as much as we did (and that privately they think of the judge as Big Sond).

Same here. I hope Fifer gave them a good laugh during all the hard work they put in.

moto748e · 13/04/2026 13:15

Ah, that's lovely!

DontStopMe · 13/04/2026 14:10

That's an excellent article, so many great points.

BezMills · 13/04/2026 14:37

I'm very glad that was the quote they went for, and I hope they found some of the other bits amusing too. It was a real trip coming up with all that nonsense on the fly while C+P in real time.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/04/2026 15:00

You were amazing, Bez. I don't understand how you kept that commentary going for so long, it must have melted your brain.

Naomi is very hot on bundles being done correctly, to the point that she was interviewed on a legal podcast on the best way to do them: https://employmentlawmatters.buzzsprout.com/442960/episodes/16183173-s9e12-tribunal-bundles

S9E12 - Tribunal Bundles - Employment Law Matters

In this episode, I talk about putting together employment tribunal bundles with barrister Naomi Cunningham. This podcast is supported by Occupational Health Assessment Ltd and didlaw Employment Lawyers.Naomi's article - https://www.legalfeminist.or...

I love listening to that bundle podcast! I think I may have it bookmarked so that descriptions of order from chaos can sooth my soul at times of difficulty.

SqueakyDinosaur · 13/04/2026 18:36

It helps that she has a lovely speaking voice, too. ISTR from other interviews that she is also a choral singer (as all the best people are, ahem!).

Lives up to the description on his cap 🧢

I'm sure posters remember the case of Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years in prison, wrongly accused of rape. And now the police have actually found the culprit. At least I'm sure it's a relief to the victim and her family. But what a shambles!

"In 2004, a jury convicted Malkinson solely on the basis of eyewitness accounts."

Successful convictions on rape are so low, and lazy and dishonest police work is the last thing needed. All the more so when they ruin an innocent man's life.

All these elements of what did or did not happen in 2003-04 are being investigated by the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) and a wider judge-led inquiry.
To date, the IOPC has told five former officers they are under investigation for potential gross misconduct - and one serving officer is being probed for possible misconduct.
One of the former officers is also under criminal investigation for potential misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice.
GMP has confirmed that one of the officers who retired is working on police staff.

I think the DNA evidence that cleared him was known about for several years before anything was done about it.

moto748e · 19/04/2026 00:18

It's just awful the more you think about it. How do you keep your head together for 17 fucking years? Presumably he's have got out earlier if he'd admitted it? Just another thing that comes with the dismal motto, you can't trust the police. Adding to the downwards spiral.

lcakethereforeIam · 19/04/2026 10:08

There's an article in the Times that summarises this shitshow

https://archive.ph/5y8T7

https://www.thetimes.com/uk/law/article/andrew-malkinson-paul-quinn-salford-rape-case-2fl3h6c5r

It was 2007 that DNA was found that strongly suggested they had the wrong man. They did nothing. Leaving a potentially innocent man to have his life wasted behind bars, a victim without justice and a monster free to do as he wished which might have included make more victims

Now detectives are investigating Quinn in connection to three other rapes in Greater Manchester since 2003.

The rapist who partied, had children and let Andrew Malkinson rot

Paul Quinn has finally been convicted of the crime for which Malkinson spent 17 years in jail. Now the full story can be told, from Quinn’s depraved past to a fateful knock at the door

Yes, the times article mentions that because he refused to admit to the rape he was deemed to have not “addressed his crime”.

DH and I were chatting yesterday and he admitted that he doesn’t trust the police any more. If they have lost the trust of us - middle aged, middle class professionals brought up by honest working class parents to respect authority and trust the police implicitly - then there’s little hope really.
