Women's rights general conversations - Thread 10

Continuation of Thread 9.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

That's gross, hilarious and mesmerising 😅

Good evening old friends. I rarely post here now but still follow this thread religiously and various other random ones each week, but I had to pop in to post this JKR review of Sturgeon’s self-aggrandising gubbins. Turns out that the Potter novelist can string some coherent words together. Who knew? There are probably ten other threads on it but whevs.

The twilight of Nicola Sturgeon J.K. Rowling reviews Frankly - J.K. Rowling

Warning: this article contains adult content and is not appropriate for children. I know I’m stating the obvious, and I’ll probably be one of countless reviewers making the same point, but it’s impossible to read Nicola Sturgeon’s memoir without rememb...

It's a belting review!

Medee · 15/08/2025 07:56

That is brilliant!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 15/08/2025 08:02

Fantastic review! I need to read it again to take everything in.

anyolddinosaur · 15/08/2025 08:21

Apart from one fuckwit no swearing, I'd expected more 😀

Kucinghitam · 15/08/2025 08:27

Hello @bignosebignose! Good to see you!

She has been annotating her copy and is going to auction it for charity. There's plenty of swearing there - she posted a photo on X of a page where she's written ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!! across the top....

BezMills · 15/08/2025 08:37

Greetings @bignosebignose

There is also a “clusterfuck”, but if it were very sweary she would be criticised for it.

Great takedown.

bignosebignose · 15/08/2025 10:00

Kathleen Stock also putting the boot into Nicola.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 15/08/2025 10:23

Thanks, bignosebignose - nice to see you!

The review by Kathleen Stock is harsher on Sturgeon that JKR's, far more critical and goes into more detail. I love them both, though.

Anyone know what the numbers are on how many copies have been sold?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 15/08/2025 10:27

The last two sentences, oh god...😬

"If Frankly is anything to go by, then, strictly speaking Sturgeon never did have imposter syndrome. To have that particular malaise, your nagging suspicion you aren’t really up to the task has to be wrong."

FarriersGirl · 15/08/2025 17:01

Thanks for the Kathleen Stock review. She is another fantastic wordsmith.

TakingMyChancesWithTheRabbits · 16/08/2025 06:59

My favourite bit of the JKR review is actually the bit taking the piss out of Boris

anyolddinosaur · 16/08/2025 08:21

Stock's ending was just brilliant.

That was a lovely passing sideswipe.

That was a lovely passing sideswipe.

Also damning Sturgeon with the faint praise of being slightly better than Johnson

Britinme · 16/08/2025 13:50

I love this line from Ditum’s column: “ The Sturgeon version of feminism is little more than a childish excuse for her own failings: a big patriarchy did it and ran away.”

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/08/2025 16:07

Unfortunately, unless they have a written definition of wormen one can't safely assume anything.

Indeed. Quite a few of the categories explicitly say ‘female’ so we can hope.
