I want to meet other GC women in person

I've joined LWS
I've joined the WRN
I'm active in GC FB groups

But I've never been to any meet ups - possibly because I'm not in a city and the small towns near me don't seem to have any GC activity that I know of.

I'm not an activist but I would just like to hang out with other sex realists. How does one do this?!!

Do any of you meet people in real life?

I tried to join my local WRN but couldn't get anywhere with it. They did reply but said the main Facebook group was full or something. Said I could join another one only no one really posts on it so not sure what the point of that would be. They seemed suspicious of me, don't know why or how I'm supposed to prove I'm genuine. Gave up in the end which is a shame, I would quite like to go along to meet ups and meet some like minded feminists.

Swashbuckled · 08/03/2025 21:45

I requested to join WRN a bit ago and somebody (a regional rep?) emailed me and offered me a video appointment before progressing. I understood this; it’s a good way to check out whether I’m a woman.

But I also have to be careful because of my line of work, and didn’t feel okay about having a video call with someone I didn’t know. Could have been a patient, for all I knew, or a partner of one. So I didn’t progress it. I’m probably on their files as a TRA now.

Anyway, I’m okay with it.

tourdefrance · 08/03/2025 22:04

I'm a WRN member and was impressed by the screening process. It obviously helps if you already know someone but not essential. We have a very active WhatsApp group.

Bannedontherun · 09/03/2025 09:52

Hmm when i applied i just got an email saying no branch at the moment?

ArabellaScott · 09/03/2025 10:03

Bear in mind 'Beth' - TRA in Scotland -managed to con his way into one of the local feminist groups. The creep.

Women are cautious for valid reasons.

Yes. I don’t think any WRN group is going to accept someone who none of them have, at least, met in a video call.

Swashbuckled · 09/03/2025 10:34

Yes, I agree that video calls are a necessary screening tool.

Really? I had not seen that. Wow.

There's a WRN group for the North West with quite a few women in Cumbria.

@JazzyJelly I'm in Manchester too! I went to one meet up back in 2018/19 maybe to a very interesting talk held in a church in the city centre but venue not announced until just before so a group of us met at the station. It was great but I'm a single parent too so didn't manage another one but DD is older now so I could escape occasionally (not an undercover TRA honest).

Hello fellow station meeter!

If you're interested in getting out and about again and you're still in the MN Radicals WhatsApp group, then send a message on there and I'll pass on details of what's on in Manchester. If not, DM when they reopen and I can let you know what's on.

Igmum · 09/03/2025 15:18

@FortunaMajor I had completely forgotten that WhatsApp group but I am still on it (group created 2019 so my guess was not too bad). I've put a message in there 😀

RaininSummer · 09/03/2025 15:47

I have applied to join WRN. Will wait and see if I pass muster. I do have some good GC credentials especially with Fair Play for Women's campaigns pre Covid but guess I can't prove that.

PollyHutchen · 09/03/2025 16:09

With WRN vetting, co-ordinators will look at past social media, who people follow etc. They'll ask people about why they want to join, what they know about the network already. I'm not sure that it's necessarily about having to have done lots of stuff in the past. More about where women are at in the present, what women believe in and feel strongly about, and how - time permitting - they would like to make a difference.

RaininSummer · 09/03/2025 17:30

Thanks. I can't post much as I am a civil servant so my Facebook won't show a lot beyond likes of some other posts

For subtle indicators the museum of London shop has some suffragette badges

Suffragette

Every purchase supports the museum.

@elbowhammer Are you a signed up for local LWS?
There are remote zoom meetings for women who can’t make meetings for various reasons

Grammarnut · 11/03/2025 09:48

I too would like to meet fellow GC women. I live in a w.midland's city but can find no groups at all. I have met one woman who said 'mumsnet is great', but I do not know that she is GC (and I suspect probably not from other clues) and we enjoyed a chat about women's sci fi writing, but that's all. I belong to a writing circle but would not dare raise the issue there, many are young and I suspect very woke! Pro-actively, I have just ordered two Suffragette badges (been thinking of doing so for a while but could not justify expense) in hopes someone may speak to me, if I wear them (and maybe I can give the TiM who comes to my church a nudge that not everyone here believes in 'be kind' - six foot, 40s, wears pigtails and an Alice band with an utterly male voice and presence, wtaf? Fetish in a place of worship?).
A dinosaur sweatshirt or T-shirt would be useful, too! As worn by Victoria Smith on Radio 4 recently - the item that Emily Callaci did not realise the significance of (sorry for dangling participle)🤔.

Yes I have signed up, looked for local groups but none exist. When I spoke to the coordinator who vetted me, we spoke about building up a local group but don't really know where to go from here.

What area are you in? There will be some options for you?

Boiledbeetle · 15/03/2025 00:57

Burntt · 08/03/2025 04:14

I have the same problem.

I also keep changing my username as I repeatedly over share on the disability or autism or abuse threads. Keep telling myself I will stop but then can't.

I know there are riddles and codes and they go over my head I wish I knew how to learn

I could pm my old user names to prove I'm not a TRA. I'm terrible with recognition of names though so would need a very prolific long term poster to tell me they are safe 😂. I'm in Boiledbeetle book. I'm long rambly and have poor spelling and punctuation in my comments so easy to check the names I give are me 😂

I don't have much opportunity to make friends irl as have high need autistic child I care for full time. Also autistic myself so often people don't like me as I'm different. Had a good group of friends then one child comes out nb, the group disintegrated and i got excluded from new meet up plans because I didn't gush praise and rainbows at their bravery.

I think suffragette colours is effective in signalling you are GC. Does not have to be so obvious as a scarf or pin. If clock you in violet top, green cardigan and a white bag and if you were a person i saw regularly id compliment how well the colours go together. I have lots of feminist slogan T-shirts that get compliments regularly when I'm out, it's usually not a situation I can make a friend as im a carer and wrapped up with that but im sure if I could stop for a chat they would be GC- why else comment as I wear t shirt when not making an effort and definitely do not look good haha

If you switch to your UTDOD username then you can PM me from your book username and then I can confirm you are a fellow FWR poster and not a TRA poster!

I'm very trustworthy, apart from where Tunnocks are involved, and then I've swiped them and I'm out the door before you've even blinked!

elbowhammer · 06/03/2025 23:43

Not easy for me (single mum). I just want to feel less isolated. There may be GC women in my circles but I just don't know, like they don't know about me.
Honestly, I thought we would be past this secret handshake-like business by now but it's still so hard to openly meet likeminded people.

I’ve been surprised at the number of people in my circle who share the same thinking, when I’ve gently questioned and shared a little of my own view.

RaininSummer · 15/03/2025 08:32

I haven't heard back from WRN yet so that doesn't seem a way to get involved locally.

PollyHutchen · 15/03/2025 09:00

I think if you haven't heard back from WRN, you should contact them and query this. Groups are volunteer run and there are times when co-ordinators have so much on that the admin may get a bit delayed.
