FFS. What is different now? It's not as if they weren't told over and over again what the consequences would be. 🙄

Dr Upton has fucked up majorly.
If I wasn't so angry I'd be thanking him.

But wouldn’t it be wonderful if the fragrant doctor’s lasting legacy was to have peaked the world and his dog?

So it should be debated.

I think after 10,000 you get a written response.

And sometimes they are so effing useless it helps increase signatories. And I think the Petition Committee and quite strong on Government replying within time - not forgetting the moment they sent a Government response to a petition back and said it hadn't answered the point of the petition!

After 100,000 there should be a debate, but from what I have seen, these are usually in a committe room, not the HoC.

Ah, right, thanks. Yes. The petition should get some form of response, anyway!

Bagpussnotbothered · 18/02/2025 21:32

Lay your bets for the Government response to the petition.

Will it be:
A) The law is adequate, nothing to see here.
B) We are waiting for the High Court outcome.
C) There’s an issue and we're talking to the relevant minister in charge and kicking it into the long grass.

My money is on a mealy mouth phrase with fingers crossed behind their back that it will all go away. Like last time.

IwantToRetire · 18/02/2025 21:34

If you're looking at the map Iwanttoretire posted, that's an older petition. The numbers are very different (and boundaries have changed!).

Maybe, but the point of posting it was showing the huge difference based on colours in both the older and newer petition.

Deep red north of the border, and pale yellow and bit of orange south of the border.

And the Act is UK wide.

eatfigs · 18/02/2025 21:35

Naomi Cunningham did an amazing job getting this tribunal out in the open and asking all the right questions in cross-examination. I wonder if she already had an inkling that the doctor was such a hardline trans ideologue.

I'm sure it would be lovely to be the forgive and forget type, but I'm not, and I'll never forgive or forget how utterly prepared and willing most politicians nationally were to chuck women onto the pyre of righteousness lit by the trans rights activists.

They were going to stand in front of the pyre and watch us burn.

They can cross all the bloody Bridges they like, I wont stand in their way, but I'm not going to thank the fuckers.

Honestly, I'm with you. It's all very lovely to talk about Golden Bridges, but in Scotland our NHS, universities, schools, government, Police, local government, rape and domestic violence sector, arts and culture sector and just about every 3rd sector organisation have actively (not passively, but actively) demonised women, refused to listen to any sort of women's organisations who didn't talk the correct talk and held a modern day witch hunt. It's going to take decades to get all this shite out.

With only a few exceptions, the Scottish Government have shown itself to be made up of cowardly pile of shite MSP's who followed all this GI shite with a zeal which was astonishing. Our Minister for Equalities was pictured under a sign saying 'decapitate terfs' ffs! I've gone from someone who was for Independence and was proud of the Scottish Government who now believes the whole shower needs removed before Scotland can have an any way credible Government. The current lot have made us look fools in front of the world and if they double down because they've not been given a kind enough golden bridge, then they'll just make themselves look even bigger fools on a world stage, which is finally becoming aware of the insidiousness of all this.

And now we're meant to be gracious to a bunch of craven, history revising, opportunistic chancers who've finally worked out the wind has changed and are now desperately trying to hold onto votes.

Nah, fuck that.

I've just been rereading this session of the GRR Bill, which includes contributions from Naomi Cunningham (and Pam Duncan-Glancy).

They could just re-use the tory response from 2023! ie:

As announced in 2020, we believe the Gender Recognition Act 2004 is effective, strikes the right balance and allows for those who wish to legally change their sex. We have no plans to change it.
Read the response in fullWe are committed to upholding Britain’s long-standing record of protecting the rights of individuals against unlawful discrimination. Government is also clear that we want people who are transgender to be able to live their lives as they wish.

The previous Government launched a consultation on reforming the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) 2004. As part of the consultation process, we received over 100,000 responses and since it closed, considerable work has gone into meeting with a range of relevant stakeholders.

As announced in September 2020, we believe the current provisions in the GRA are effective and allow for those who wish to change their legal sex. The process has the right checks and balances. We believe that the process of legally changing one’s legal sex is a serious and legally meaningful undertaking which requires appropriate checks and a level of formality. We believe this strikes the right balance and have no plans to change it.

The Government is also committed to maintaining the safeguards that allow organisations to provide single-sex services, provided for separately via the Equality Act 2010. It is important that the principle of being able to operate spaces reserved for women and girls is maintained, in line with the Equality Act. Government is committed to tackling harassment and abusive behaviours by all individuals, and ensuring single-sex spaces are safe for those using them.

The Equality Act makes it clear that providers have the right to restrict use of spaces on the basis of sex and gender reassignment, whether or not someone has a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), where this is justified.

Although if Labour was to write something like this it would in fact be a change in their position, because they did say (still say?) they want to amend the GRA to make it easier to get a GRC. Angry

Evidence session from an anonymous person during the consultation of the GRR Bill. The anonymous person (I assume a woman) was discussing the needs of BME women for single sex spaces:

'An option of an enclosed, gender neutral toilet would be great.'

Pam Duncan-Glancy MSP: 'where would a trans woman go if she didn’t want to
use a gender neutral toilet because she was worried she may out herself?'

This is such a ridiculous question 'where would a trans women go if she didn't want to out herself'
For one, it stands out a bloody mile anyway. Going into a gender neutral loo isn't going to out you, your male body and looks is going to out you.
For two, no real women would think for a single second people might think they're male if they go into a gender neutral toilet.

It is an absurd question. If a gender neutral loo reveals one's gender then it's not very gender neutral.

But of course the question is only a desperate attempt to suggest that transwomen must have access to women, women's bodies in a women-only space, to validate their identity.

Washinghanginginthesun · 18/02/2025 22:10

If they didn’t want to out themselves as trans they would use the men’s

JanesLittleGirl · 18/02/2025 22:23

We are now getting down to the nub of it. How is it possible for a transwoman to out themself? Do they out themselves by using gender neutral facilities or do they out themselves by simply being themselves?

maximalistmaximus · 18/02/2025 22:28

Liars the lot of them!

I'll never forget, never forgive.

Scout2016 · 18/02/2025 22:54

I think this has been a perfect storm. Just like how quickly Isla Bryson came along in his pink leggings to illustrate the risks they said wouldn't happen happening. A sex offending male blatantly playing the system. But people don't care so much about women in prison.

The fact the Fife case involves a TW giving evidence and the fact they have spouted nonsense, the fact this TW is a smug infuriating arse and - majorly I think - compounded by the fact they are a doctor ... I don't think a man employed in many other jobs spouting nonsense would have had the same impact as "he said what now? And hes a doctor?". But people have opinions about the NHS, how their money is spent, and people do care about nurses, more I would guess than they care about doctors. For example I know many people who would want nurses to have a pay rise but think doctors are taking the piss, paid well already and using patients as pawns with strikes etc.
Nurses seem to be more popular, in my opinion. (I have no research papers to back that theory up.)
People also care about themselves and their family and do not want to be treated by someone creepy who doesn't appear to even have primary school biology skills.

@Scout2016 yes this one is the perfect storm.
Everyone must know someone in the nursing profession.
While Isla opened eyes, lots of people couldn't care less about the prison population. But they do care about nurses.

I hope Sandie Peggie is chilling out. She is an absolute star woman.

Plus, people expect criminals to act disgracefully and to have no shame. Whereas obviously doctors are held to higher standards.

It was such a stroke of genius naming him second respondent so he had to get on the stand. He wasn't able to duck out of it like that coward Mriduhl

Yip and the Doctor basically saying he would treat a woman who'd requested a female Doctor.

I'm a pretty laid back individual, and generally trust medical professionals to be professional.
I had fertility treatment more internal ultrasounds than I care to count. My last smear the nurse was a SCHOOL MUM, being fair she did say I could cancel and get a different nurse. I went ahead trusting she wouldn't be discussing my hair-do at the school gates.

But I'd honestly question the motives of a Man pretending to be a Woman is he getting a kick out of it?

Scout2016 · 19/02/2025 00:03

@GargoylesofBeelzebub bloody loved it though didn't he? Seemed to relish the chance to soapbox and show how clever he is...at the start at least!
I recall beforehand some were thinking he wouldn't show, or were feeling a bit sorry for him...that didn't last. I got the impression he'd have been rather miffed if he hadn't had the chance to speak.

I suspect a few of the supporters behind him weren't too unhappy with being in the reflected limelight either. What a circus he made of it all.
