Newly renovated, beautifully appointed. Food and Beverages, excellent (if sometimes unexpected service), delightful clientele, special accommodation for invalids, pedants, readers and normal people.

I am so tired. I gather that's a normal reaction to major bodywork repairs. So one of those big comfy chairs in which gentlemen nod off at their clubs, please, in the convalescent area.

Also, the bad news isn't letting up in the new year, so if a gerbil waiter could bring a very large drink round, that would be great. I'm OK to drink Bluestocking alcohol with strong painkillers, right?

lcakethereforeIam · 15/01/2025 11:23

Yes. Do you need anything else to be comfortable?

Oh poor Cher!
I've been told that it takes months and months to fully recover from a general anaesthetic [hey! spelt it right first go🙂] and having had an op a few months ago, I can readily believe it. It's awful when you feel you'll never be right, you'll just stay in that flopping-down-into-nearest-chair mode for ever and ever..
but it does get better, I'm beginning to come out of the weariness fog. The wintry weather doesn't help, and spring is just around the corner so that should speed up the return to whatever normal used to be.

Take it easy, make much use of the club-style armchairs in the Stocking, and don't worry, you can knock back the alcohol here with heavy-duty pharmaceuticals, and it will have zero effect, you'll be grand.

Apart from seeing fish chatting with puffins and beetles wearing stripey jim-jams, but not that is NOT a side effect of mixing drugs and alcohol, that's a side of effect of being in the BluestockingGrin

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2025 11:32

I feel like the concept of 'convalescence' used to be better understood.

The Bluestocking has perfectly sized chairs for every woman's size and strength, and attentive staff. Rest and recuperate, Cher.

Chersfrozenface · 15/01/2025 11:43

lcakethereforeIam · 15/01/2025 11:23

Now you come to mention it, I need to (checks notes) avoid low blood sugar levels. So a variety of Tunnocks would be lovely. Also, I'm partial to things with dried fruit in them, so Welsh cakes, bara brith, saffron buns, Eccles cakes, fruit cake, hot cross buns, etc - ooh, and of course Florentines have fruit and nuts and chocolate.

lcakethereforeIam · 15/01/2025 11:50

I think there's some panettone left over from Christmas. Would you like the gerbils to toast and butter a couple of slices?

Yes, please.

It's a law of the universe that there is always pannetone left over after Christmas, isn't it?

lcakethereforeIam · 15/01/2025 11:59

I've got one and a half. Although one I bought after Christmas because it was massively discounted and the box has a pretty green ribbon. It's just occurred to me I just need to keep an eye out for a white one next Christmas. I've got a purple one already from a previous panettone.

I think I'll have a slice or two, untoasted. It's probably soft enough to not hurt my gum where I had the tooth removed yesterday.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/01/2025 12:05

I exercised massive self-control this Christmas, and didn't buy any panettone - it's usually a staple of my Christmas food. There was even one in a really pretty tin, and I do love a nice tin, but I resisted.

So if the gerbils could do me a couple of slices of toasted panettone, that would be lovely - thank you very much.

Since we have lions in the Bluestocking, would it be possible to have a tiger too, please? I have wanted a tiger as a pet for ages - I reckon if I had one from a tiny cub, I could rear it to be a safe house cat, and have lots of snuggles with it, but my dh (who is a big old meanie) says no - he doesn't think it is safe, and he thinks the neighbours (especially those with small children) might object. But a Bluestocking tiger would definitely not eat me, and as dh will be over in the Staunch Ally, he won't be able to object. Game, set and match me!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/01/2025 12:08

I thought we'd finished the last of our panettones, but I just found one slice of crust bagged up in the breadbin.

AlisonDonut · 15/01/2025 12:11

I didn't buy any pannetone mainly because we couldn't get through the door what with the volume of madelines.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/01/2025 12:13

Cher's chair...

I specified fruit cakes & florentines, but you know AI. I would've asked for a dressing gown, but AI seems to think that's risque these days, especially if a chaise longue is involved. It seems to be living in the Victorian era all of a sudden.

Just let the gerbils know when you need restocking! Ahh look They have even provided a pinny so you don't get crumbs all over your clothes!

AI, doesn't know the difference between a dressing gown and a negligee.

Incidentally, is anyone here old enough to remember quilted and candlewick dressing gowns?

You can have Mrytles from last night, after she settled for chocolates instead.

Just keep it in your room and don't tell anyone. It will be our little secret!

An extra hand is, er, handy. One for my drink, one for a cake, one for a book / phone / other electronic gadget.

And AI seems to have grasped my liking for cherry blossom. Though William Morris would also be very acceptable. Or Mary Delany.

That's me asking for plum blossom (&originally cracked ice as well). Mrs Delaney of paper collage fame? I'll try another time but I have to go now & get some exercise & go for walkies with DH at a local stately home. Bleurgh. First time since Christmas due to bad weather & laziness. I'm sure it'll do me good. (said through gritted teeth)

I thought all the emotional support animals at the Bluestocking were female.

Interestingly, children are far more likely to assume their soft toys are male than female, unless the toy has a female marker, such as a dress or bow. This includes cows. Which are female.

Maybe it's George as short for Georgina, because it identifies as a male tiger, but is actually female? That would be allowed.

It lends a whole new meaning to 'Can I give you a hand?' doesn't it?

Is that the prim AI version of woman in dressing gown/negligée whatevs?
OK so it's not actually showing norkage, but with necklines that plunging, norkage is implied. And there's that pout..

Or there's comfy slippers and a pinny to catch the crumbs, nothing in between..
Madonna and you-know-what all over again, innit?Grin
