Loirs are edible dormice. I feel they need some inclusion in the wider discussion.

On the roster of cute rodents, or on the menu?

I'm a vegetarian so just the roster!

MyrtleStrumpet · 05/12/2024 11:15

Apparently we have rats beneath our (rotting) decking. The neighbours saw one chasing a blackbird only to be thwarted when it flew off. How dare the wingéd things actually use their wings?!

Anyway they tested the waters to see if we are willing to shoot poison the damn things and offered to pay half the bill. I am always prepared to poison rats. Unless they are fancy rats kept as pets. Don't worry, no firearms available (though I used to be a damn good shot at pistol before they banned handguns).

My neighbours are back for the week.

They have come back to (not even kidding) check for Loirs in their house as last time they arrived, they had got into the fridge and eaten all the food, shat everywhere and were still alive, they'd locked themselves in said fridge and then once the fridge had been opened, were running round the house, covered in shit, and they only saw 1 leave the premises.

Loirs are edible dormice. I feel they need some inclusion in the wider discussion.

So loir = 'edible dormouse' ?- to some people anything is edible🙄
A friend of mine reported that in Peru she had seen roasted guinea-pigs on stakes outside restaurants, like the way barbers have red and white poles... and we agreed that if you have sensitive pet-loving 8-year-olds, Peru mightn't be the best family holiday destination..

Your poor neighbours' loirs were probably teenagers who realised - woo hooo! partayyy! - they had the house to themselves, I'm sure grown-up loirs are much more responsible house-sitters. That's 'sitters', no h.Grin

Definitely cute - more like lemurs than dormice? - and could put on displays of acrobatics in the garden.

"How dare the wingéd things actually use their wings?!"

When my mum was a teenager, her parents had a houseboat moored at Littlehampton, where they went for family holidays. They used to take their siamese cat with them, and he'd sit on the roof of the boat, fuming whilst the seagulls shouted at him (seagull shrieking sounds very much like Siamese cat miaowing, so I suspect he thought they were being Very Rude Seagulls). He hated that they could be rude to him, then fly away.

One day he got enraged with them, and tried to fly off the boat after them, but sadly Siamese cats do not fly as well as seagulls do, so he ended up in the river, where he was fished out by one of my aunts, who happened to be out in the dinghy at the time. According to the cat this was the seagulls' fault, my aunt's fault, the river's fault, but not his fault - they were treated to a long lecture on the subject! 😂

I have no idea why they left anything in their fridge in the first place...I'd have emptied it personally.

I asked the AI for a shrew wearing a female medieval costume & this is what it came up with.🙄

I love the Tudor costumes, @ifIwerenotanandroid - Tudor history is my favourite period, though I have been learning more about the run-up to the Tudors, via the Plantagenets and the Wars of the Roses.

I am also a huge fan of The Tudors - the TV series with Jonathan Rhys Myers - I know it is massively inaccurate, but I don't care - I just love all the costumes, settings and music.

If I could wave a magic wand, and have the career of my choice (and the necessary skills) I'd be a maker of historical costumes. All the jewels and sparkles and embroidery, please!

How on earth did the loirs manage to open the fridge?

I know some people empty the fridge and leave the door open when they are going on holiday, but we’re told they had eaten all the fridge food.
If that had happened, how did the loirs manage to shut the fridge when they were inside?

I suspect the intervention of a third party. The spirit of their house cat?

Very educational, the Bluestocking. I had never heard of a loir.

We have absolutely no idea. Also, our other neighbour was going through their house to mow their lawn every couple of weeks and didn't notice anything.

I'd think they were making it up if they hadn't been utterly freaked out and come back a month later to check things.

DeanElderberry · 05/12/2024 12:36

Hector (the cat) of blessed memory once leapt out of an upstairs window in pursuit of a bird. I found him sitting on the lawn below looking even more baffled than usual. Hector (the dog) was a dimwit too. I loved them both so much.

We don't have edible dormice in Ireland because the Romans didn't come here and import them, but I heard a dreadful tale about what a pine marten did when it got locked into someone's empty house. It didn't end well for the poor pine marten or the art collection.

AlisonDonut · 05/12/2024 12:38

I love the French. It does what it says on the tin. Front and centre of the pharmacy this morning, blokey eye level.

Also I've made some ceramic cat cookies for protecting my kiln shelves today. That's the sort of mood I'm in.

Takes care of your erections...? I think though if the relationship has progressed this far they're probably okay to use 'tu'.

Loving the pottery. In a platonic fashion.

Really? My day was going quite nicely without knowing about a fridgeful of merde-covered souris, merci. Moving swiftly on (without Aiing it),,,

Did a bit of stealth terfing at my eldest. We were watching something on taxonomy. There's a German institute trying to catalogue and, importantly, name different sea creatures. They said you can't pass laws to protect something if you can't name it. So we had a wee chat about that. I hope I wasn't too obvious.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 05/12/2024 13:48

@lcakethereforeIam Sounds like the ideal opportunity.

Browsing Facebook & a cooking video came up with some gobsmacking ideas...

Could the bar gerbil rustle me up something gentle and unchallenging please? Had a dodgy meal out last night and been feeling queasy all day.

Are you up to a comforting bowl of soup with that toast?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 05/12/2024 19:28

I didn't even engage surrealist mode for these.

Well, I tried it with 'surrealism' in the request & they weren't as surreal, they just seemed a bit Magritte-y.

Here are some more without 'surrealism',,,

Thanks Android, just what I needed. Although the single bean on toast I could maybe do without.

Bowl of chicken noodle soup, I think Errol.

Wouldn't an animation involving all those crazy images of gerbils juggling slices of toast etc be fun? The soundtrack could be one of those busy-sounding pieces by Eric Coates or Robert FarnonSmile

I've got Bohemian Rhapsody going through my head looking at the gerbil and toast pictures!
