"We, the undersigned, are deeply disturbed that populist messages particularly targeting Muslims have gained traction among significant numbers of social media accounts associated with the gender critical movement."

Statement on the gender critical movement and the far right

Since the horrific murders in Southport on 29 July, the UK has seen an alarming outbreak of far-right violence, with organised gangs targeting mosques and setting fire to asylum hostels. It is clea…

This recent drive to close down all nuance and package individual thought into movements and tribal collectives is as transparent as it's tiresome.

Such lazy, crude, ideologically stymied and reductive thinking. The minute I hear the word 'align' in any political context I cease to take that person even remotely seriously.

On a par with #NoDebate and other tired sound bites, the word is as good as a bell around their necks.

Do you try to make all your posts personal? Or just those who suggest that certain behaviours may be racist.

You aim posts at one person. That is making it personal.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 15/08/2024 15:18

Oh dear gawd. Is this yet another fucking KJK bashing thread?

Just fuck off with that shit and go speak to her directly.

And those that signed it, and that get income from right wing sources are hypocrites.

Why? They aren't criticising 'the right'. They're criticising the 'far right'. They clearly point that out. It's almost like you are ignoring that

Oh so just a little bit of right, just a modicum of right but no not THAT much right, that's too far. They are goodies for sticking to just the right amount of right. I see.

Didn't bother to read it then?

We mean anyone who justifies or incites the violent scapegoating of immigrants and minoritised communities, including the violent and criminal anti-Muslim leader who calls himself Tommy Robinson and those who support or defend him.
We also mean those who have jumped on the previous misuse of the ‘far-right’ label by over-zealous sections of the liberal left to now question, minimise or even deny altogether the existence of the far right and the grave and very real threat it poses to the safety and well-being of communities across the UK.

Or are you in the second group?

Dumbo12 · 15/08/2024 15:23

I have aimed posts at people who stood next to "Tommy Robinson" and right wing racist thugs and those who supported them in that endeavour. I believe that what they supported was racist right wing thuggery. Ranting at me about how much they've done, versus how little I have done is doing nothing to lessen their support of racist thugs imo. Maybe it's OK, to you, to offer support to "Tommy Robinson"

BackToLurk · 15/08/2024 15:25

If it helps I know at least one of the people who signed that letter is a Tory voter. They understand what the far right is, seems to be too difficult concept for some MN posters

Can you explain how you define it?

Oh no, how can we tell what a woman is. (obvious sarcasm)

Start with

"anyone who justifies or incites the violent scapegoating of immigrants and minoritised communities, including the violent and criminal anti-Muslim leader who calls himself Tommy Robinson and those who support or defend him."

PurpleSparkledPixie · 15/08/2024 15:32

Maybe, maybe not. Everyone has a different understanding of what far right actually means. Although personally I never look to see if some is on the left, right, central, or far far away. It's meaningless noise tbh.

Once more for those at the back. IT'S IN THE LETTER

PurpleSparkledPixie · 15/08/2024 15:35

But who is THE LETTER for? ?

ArabellaScott · 15/08/2024 15:37

After much consideration, here is my Full Statement:

If anyone doesn't vocally and swiftly agree with it, in its entirety, I will assume that means that they are aligned with the contrary view, and therefore I shall draw my own conclusions.

So be it.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 15/08/2024 15:35

But who is THE LETTER for? ?

IMO it's a position statement. They touch on that at the end "We are not prepared to accept the hard work done by so many being co-opted and endangered by people inciting and defending race riots. Not only will it make it much harder for us to get the hearing we desperately need from the new government," I fell like no-one has actually read it.

I'm not in any group.

I just simply believe that people can talk to, listen to and go to what they want.
That doesn't make me part of any group.

But they mustn't write letters with other people.......

Again. Who for? What will it achieve?

Is it for Starmer? If yes what do you want him to do with that statement?

Or is this another one of Santa's naughty lists? I really don't get it.

It's a statement. I called it a letter (maybe I picked up someone else's' term), but it isn't actually is it. It's just a statement, by some people about where they stand on a particular issue. Not sure why some people are so put out by that.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 15/08/2024 16:04

I'm not put out by it, I'm just wondering what it is for, and who will receive it. Do we sign it and then stick it on our fridge with the kids nursery pictures, or print it out and put it with our house deeds, or flash it at the local elections? Or does Starmer gratefully accept it in front of Downing Street with camera flashes popping off?

What is the end purpose of it (and for who)?

ArabellaScott · 15/08/2024 16:06

Can't believe you're all continuing to fail to align yourselves with the Discourse of the Horned Rhino.

Hardly, but I, for one, would not want a group of knuckle dragging ex C18 thugs using women's rights issues as an excuse to promote violence against people from the Indian sub continent.

How do they do that?

BorgQueen · 15/08/2024 16:15

I wonder how many of them would sign a statement denouncing the pro Palestine marches? After all, if you are with a group of people calling for intifada and the destruction of Israel, you are one of them aren’t you? Isn’t that how it works?

There’s at least one rabid anti semite in that list of signatures, so they must all be, right?

I wouldn’t sign that letter if they were all outside my house with torches and pitchforks, who the hell do they think they are?
It’s pathetic virtue signalling and I’m surprised at some of the names on there.
I haven’t seen anyone siding with the ‘far right’ or the grifting conman TR/ YL.
