Jolyon jumps the shark - is trans a cult?

Jolyon 'fox killer' Maugham has been on one for 6 days straight now. It all started with Streeting's PBs ban and ratcheted up when JoMo sent Streeting a list of 25 questions which Streeting ignored - and on a Sunday too. As of yesterday JoMo, a KC (though Guido Fawkes reported his licence expired in May), was encouraging people to break the law by accessing banned PB drugs from abroad. As of today he has well and truly jumped the shark with the below, horrible post on X.

My question to this board is why do TRAs feel the need to ratchet up the emotional temperature of the debate so high? Why do they so quickly devolve the conversation to death and suicide? It's an ugly strain that runs right through all TRA talking points. I personally think TRA is an eschatological cult and the focus on death is a intrinsic part of that. Others may think it's all about emotional blackmail.

Either way, please use this thread to discuss JoMo, Streeting's unaccounably cruel ignoring of him, and TRA emotional hysteria / threats in general at this crucial time just after the PB ban was announced.

EDIT - could not upload the screenshot of JoMo's post but it reads as follows:

"And don't underestimate the political tail of Wes Streeting's decision. His colleagues will slowly be coming to terms with him locking them into a future of bereaved parents tipping ashes outside Number 10 and a revival of mass die-ins wherever they go."

Which post? I can’t access Twitter/X

Did you mean to cut and paste? Hard to form an opinion without the copy.....

Men not getting their own way, feeling thwarted by women. Age old. Seems to enrage some types of men. Lack of empathy for women/misogyny and seeing trans rights under the same umbrella as LGB rights?

CocoapuffPuff · 17/07/2024 12:50

Whisky. Lots of it. That's my guess.

redfacebigdisgrace · 17/07/2024 12:50

Wow just seen your edit - that is hysterical. He needs to take some time away from social media 😮

What little I've learnt of him says hyper hysterical unhinged rants are his thing.

Wow. Someone posted a thread on here a few days ago with a film (Skirt goes spinney was in corner of video) on Twitter and I watched it. It started and finished with tragic awful commentary on Jonestown cult and pictures of the huge numbers of dead people and children. I thought at the time - ok I get the cult connection but not sure it’s directly relevant - but Jolyon’s tweet suggests the filmmakers choice was way more accurate than I perceived it to be. He’s never read the media suicide reporting guidelines has he? It’s almost like he can’t wait for the mass suicides to begin. Horrible. If he has gender confused children I feel for them - there’s no way back for them if they change their mind

WallaceinAnderland · 17/07/2024 12:59

We are witnessing evangelical fury in real time. Condemnation and wrath. He must be punished and punished he shall be. So sayeth the righteous.

Repent, sinners!

I think it's only on twitter, but you don't need to sign in to watch it.

I saw that piece too about Jonestown, and yes, it came to mind reading JoMo's increasingly crazy utterances.

CantDealwithChristmas · 17/07/2024 13:05

@OldCrone yes I did see that documentary which is partly what led me to start this thread. The similarities between TRA and eschatological cults of history are uncanny and that film explores them all:

  • an emphasis on dying to the old self and adopting or creating the new
  • an emphasis on leaving behind and cutting out family and friends who don't understand the new you
  • emotionally manipulative recruitment tactics focussing on the young, alone and vulnerable
  • The initiates (ie trans people especially children) seen as sacred and sacrosanct
  • The threat of death or similar dire consequences if the initiates are not properly worshipped ('validated')

Linking this back to JoMo's outbursts, I find it notable how many prominent TRAs start out with reasonable-sounding pseudo-scientific pronouncements ('my son was simply born in the wrong body' / 'the brains of trans people are different' / 'there have always been more than two genders') and, as real science disproves their claims, flal back on highly emotive and extremely morbid threats and rhetoric. Owen Jones, Susie Green, Willoughby, JoMo have all trodden this path. It's uncanny, very Jonestown.

Any time a man, who believes in his own superiority, is shown to be incorrect, he ramps up the hyperbole. This is very reminiscent of the abusive man who, when called out on his abuse, then threatens to kill himself and the kids. It is all about control, all about making people do as the man wants.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/07/2024 13:12

I agree.

Blackcats7 · 17/07/2024 13:14

It makes me wonder if anyone might ever be encouraged to martyr themselves for the cause? I truly hope not. But the combination of hysteria and vulnerable young people is not a good one. Mass die ins??

The upside is that responsible adults might read what he wrote and be enlightened - but in the meantime how much harm is his over the top rhetoric doing to actual children genuinely distressed and needing support and perspective rather than a giant-sized helping of crazy?

JM's meltdown was inevitable because he did a medical experiment on his own kid and can't face the truth.

We are going to see a LOT more of this. It is a sign we are winning, too slowly, but winning.

However we need to stand back and acknowledge how much JM has helped the pro-woman cause in the UK. Yes we could have done it without him, but it would have been way more difficult

Remember this is the TRAs top lawyer. Let him grift as much money as he can only to fail in court utterly. He has never won a gender case in fact he sets them back. He has crowdfunded 8 gender cases since 2000 none have won and that has wasted over 600k. That money could have been used in far more dangerous ways.

Because he fails so much the credibility of the TRA cause in the UK legal and medical profession is plummeting. Meanwhile GC cases stack up wins.

In the US the TRAs have some competent lawyers. The fightback there is way way more difficult.

His latest gambit attacking Streeting is invaluable to us. Yes confirm Streeting's thoughts that TRAs are insane.

Every time he rants he makes random people think. "Maybe JKR was right".

Operation Let Them Speak has never worked better.

Good Law Project: Dr Jolyon Maugham FRCPCH loses the plot over puberty blockers ban

That is actually a really interesting parallel. Yes it's the playbook of the abusive male - if they can't control the situation, then only all-out destruction will do.

"JM's meltdown was inevitable because he did a medical experiment on his own kid and can't face the truth."

This. Jo has skin in this game and remember what Helen Joyce said about this. These people cannot ever backtrack because to do so will mean that they have harmed their children. Paraphrased.

Die ins and tipping ashes outside political offices were tactics used by AIDS campaigners, particularly in the US, to protest at lack of healthcare for victims of the AIDS pandemic.

The appropropriation of the suffering of AIDS victims and their families by him is pretty vile IMO.
