Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Which supermarkets can GC women shop in? Not Tesco it seems.

I try my best to boycott/avoid the worst offenders eg M&S, Costa.

I think I have been deluding myself that Tesco has not gone down the self-id path or only in a limited virtue signally manner. Very little 'rainbow' visibility locally or on the main or local websites. Now I discover that their official policy is that their staff and customer toilets are unisex. Everyone can choose whatever toilet they want. But, in my store on a recent visit, this isn't made obvious, eg signage, and they certainly haven't redesigned the toilets to allow proper privacy, eg fully enclosed cubicles with integral wash basins.

Here are the details - see Victoria Smith @glosswitch on X

All the major supermarkets are represented in my general area, albeit at a distance. Sadly Tesco is the nearest. Can anyone recommend the best one to support in terms of legal compliance with the Equalities legislation and some semblance of concern for women and children's safety and privacy?

There was a thread recently discussing who we are boycotting generally but I can't find it. If anyone has a link that would be helpful.

I can't easily find how to email the CEO of Tesco, the head office, or my local store. So I think I will have to work up to visiting locally and try to speak to the local manager.

That's really rude. Lots of people have issues that mean they may need the loo at short notice. Don't be so bladder/bowelnormative

WyrdyGrob · 07/07/2024 12:48

Omg get a grip. Who actually uses supermarket toilets anyway? If you can’t go 40 mins without needing to have a wee, then maybe you’ve got bigger problems than bumping into the 0.1% of the population

I use Aldi. There was no Pride paraphernalia, their prices are low and their products are good. That said, I prefer small supermarkets with fewer products, so if you love hypermarkets, my local Aldi wouldn’t be for you. I haven’t checked their toilets though as it’s only ten minutes from my house.

Edited

Don't Aldi and Lidl solve the problem by not having public toilets at all? I've never seen a branch that had them.

Some Aldi stores do. One near me does. Don't know about Lidl. Google says some do.

Indeed. Thanks for capturing this now that it is deleted.

I think this and the post telling us that it is not productive of our time to ensure that women and children have spaces they feel safe in during their every day life outside of emergency services to be great examples of people who have little awareness and knowledge outside of their own belief system. That these posters feel they have some kind of moral superiority to come and attempt to shame others for caring about this issue is all that needs to be seen really.

Operation: Let them speak in action.

Maybe this video will show how ignorant it is to lecture women on what they should and shouldn’t need.

Here is just one of the critique videos from somebody who I have not heard of but is just one of the now many videos about this ad.

The Unsaid Says A Lot

3 in 4 trans and gender diverse people have been treated unfairly because of their gender identity. Each silent gesture, every unspoken word, carries weight....

My nearest Lidl has one. I think it's just one fully enclosed cubicle though.

duc748 · 07/07/2024 13:57

Perhaps they've started putting them in 'new build' premises. But this is a classic case of 'if it ain't broke..." isn't it? For decades, we've had a system that worked tolerably well: toilets marked Gents and Ladies. Obviously it could be abused, but by and large... And now the consensus seems to be to change to various different arrangements, all of which seem to suffer from the flaw that they are worse for women than the 'old' way. Biggest laff is, it's called 'progressive'. 🙄Supermarkets in particular, whose customers are mostly women anyway, need to be told that women don't want this.

OldCrone · 07/07/2024 11:26

This isn't what's under discussion. Treating so-called 'transwomen' as women would include accepting them coming into the women's toilets. She should be able to say that she doesn't agree with this and refuse to sign that she will treat so-called 'transwomen' as women in all circumstances.

Belief in biological reality is protected.

my comment was in answer to the person who was talking about Tesco sacking staff if they don’t agree with their training etc

ScrollingLeaves · 07/07/2024 22:57

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 06/07/2024 23:15

Tesco Diversity training includes the expectation that you treat trans women as women or you are discriminatory and at risk if losing your job.
You are obliged to do this training and sign to say you agree with it if you want to work there.
As a woman I feel this puts me in a difficult position.

Is this legal? Mightn’t this sign that TWAW or you can’t work here requirement be discriminatory against a person with a protected belief that a transwoman is not the same sex as a woman, and that women ( and men) are supposed to have sex based lavatories?

duc748 · 07/07/2024 23:06

You'd think a massive co like Tesco would have run that past their lawyers first, though.

StormingNorman · 07/07/2024 23:07

Shop where you want and pre at home.

Christinapple · 07/07/2024 23:24

If it's that big a deal to you (the tiny chance you will knowingly encounter a trans woman in the bathrooms who is there to pee same as you and has no interest in you whatsoever) then just order your groceries to be delivered to you?

The new PM has recently said he isn't going to change the equality act to bar trans women from using women's facilities (and the same for trans men), so this isn't going to change any time soon.

Sir Keir Starmer would seem to disagree with the idea that men who identify as women should be allowed access to female single sex facilities. So it would seem that things may change.

It depends whether he was lying during his last ditch pitch or not.

GoldenGate · 08/07/2024 16:30

I work in Tesco. This absolutely doesn't exist in our store, either colleague areas or on the shop floor. Everything is men, women or disabled (which in reality are men due to the state they become). This would go down like a wet spud in our place, former shipyard town with strong family and religious values. Everyone knows what a man and woman is and the whole gender issue is only raised in jest. Only recall one trans identified colleague and that was a xmas temp years ago, most just avoided him for fear of saying the wrong thing.

Thanks everyone. I will talk to the local management and find a head office address to write to. Tesco is very convenient for me but I can source things elsewhere. Does anyone have a link to the recent thread about who we are boycotting?

That's really helpful @GoldenGate thank you. Are the documents I showed in the OP false? If they are I will follow it up with the person who posted them on X. I have to say it would be nice to continue shopping at Tesco. I live in a traditional sort of place as well so assumed that my Tesco wasn't changing because they know it won't go down well. They are no 15 on the Stonewall top 100 employers list so they must be doing something for that even if they are selective about how they apply it?

GoldenGate · 08/07/2024 19:31

Can't speak for the company as a whole but it only shows it hasn't infiltrated all stores. Time will tell. One manager worked in another Tesco where the issue was rife like pronoun madness (high student population, home of Scottish Greens etc.)

Bully for you that you can.

I have a chronic bowel condition that means I need to use the toilet urgently and frequently. I have no desire to shit myself in Sainsburys.

The same could have been said to TW and leave women's toilets alone?

But no - women be kind and stay chained to the toilet leash.
And men can pee wherever they like! 🙄

No thought about being kind to women too and thinking of any third option. It's all just stfu women.

invisibleoldwoman · 08/07/2024 21:53

I've done some research into the main supermarkets (that I am likely to use) and put the results on the 'Go Woke, Go Broke' thread. I will probably switch my main shop to Iceland, with Morrisons as a close second and Aldi/Asda as alternatives where necessary.

It seems that whatever they did or did not do in the past most of them are not now featuring or even mentioning LGBT+, Stonewall or related organisations on their customer facing sites (unless doing a bit of token flag waving here and there occasionally) and it is just one of a number of issues in the Diversity and Inclusion sections of the careers/jobs pages. Some of them do get the current law and protected characteristics correct. Sainsbury, Tesco and the Co-op are the most suspect in terms of downgrading women's rights.

I'm going to contact all of them to see what exactly their policies are in respect of women's rights and issues seeing as they all profess to be in favour of supporting them.

I’m just not that bothered about it to be honest. You know disabled loos aren’t segregated?
