Which supermarkets can GC women shop in? Not Tesco it seems.

I try my best to boycott/avoid the worst offenders eg M&S, Costa.

I think I have been deluding myself that Tesco has not gone down the self-id path or only in a limited virtue signally manner. Very little 'rainbow' visibility locally or on the main or local websites. Now I discover that their official policy is that their staff and customer toilets are unisex. Everyone can choose whatever toilet they want. But, in my store on a recent visit, this isn't made obvious, eg signage, and they certainly haven't redesigned the toilets to allow proper privacy, eg fully enclosed cubicles with integral wash basins.

Here are the details - see Victoria Smith @glosswitch on X

All the major supermarkets are represented in my general area, albeit at a distance. Sadly Tesco is the nearest. Can anyone recommend the best one to support in terms of legal compliance with the Equalities legislation and some semblance of concern for women and children's safety and privacy?

There was a thread recently discussing who we are boycotting generally but I can't find it. If anyone has a link that would be helpful.

I can't easily find how to email the CEO of Tesco, the head office, or my local store. So I think I will have to work up to visiting locally and try to speak to the local manager.

Clearly Kaleds is a bloke unfamiliar with what women have dealt with forever in public life, the urinary leash. It’s funny how there are accounts that wait to swoop in on any dissent from the TWAW or “we just want to pee” nonsense. Almost as if it was a plan.

You are actually right, I DO have bigger problems. However, the 40 mins thing indicates you think everyone goes from home to supermarket and back again. Some of us do more with our day. 9/10 I nip into the supermarket after being on the go for hours, to grab the shop before I go home. I'm sorry you have nothing else to do.

EvelynBeatrice · 07/07/2024 10:19

Wouldn’t it be great if the world was run for women and children - just a little bit? The overwhelming majority of supermarket shoppers with young children are still women. Would it kill them to e.g. stick in a plastic stool for little people, have at least one bigger than average cubicle and safe single sex facilities or a lockable family loo?
The practical problem with ‘anyone who fancies using it’ toilets is that most woman with a toddler and a baby in pram will feel uncomfortable leaving the door partially open with pram stuck in it or visible from inside to use loo herself or assist small child to do so. Not everyone has childcare.
Additionally, given the drive to push menopause products and awareness ( see huge increased profits from meno vitamins etc), might be nice of retailers to recognise the physical consequences for women including flooding - a bit of privacy from the opposite sex please.
It is depressing how far society bends to accommodate the desires of a small group of men over the safety, privacy and dignity of women and children.

The last public ladies toilet I was in - a few days ago - had a man in it. He was the cleaner. So ultimately, a free-for-all wouldn't make much difference really!

Silly argument.

His employer will know who he is and what shift he's working.

He's not some random bloke who's just walked in.

Kaleds in our town the public toilets are either grim or closed because of vandalism. The supermarket toilets are the best option if you want somewhere clean and not full of drugs paraphernalia.

It may surprise you but some people are out of their house for more than 40 minutes at a time.

This post absolutely sums up the problem we face:

  1. Women’s dignity is completely unimportant.
  2. The idea that it’s only the 0.1% that will politely use our toilets. Other male pervs, deviants, criminals and opportunists will not take advantage of that loophole at all…
Peonies12 · 07/07/2024 10:29

Why not do something productive with your obvious high amount of free time like volunteer at a food bank or women’s shelter? Do you really think toilets are an issue?

Screamingabdabz · 07/07/2024 10:29

Sorry meant to quote @Kaleds

It’s the thin end of the wedge - do you not think women and little girls are entitled to privacy and dignity?

Tesco Diversity training includes the expectation that you treat trans women as women or you are discriminatory and at risk if losing your job.
You are obliged to do this training and sign to say you agree with it if you want to work there.
As a woman I feel this puts me in a difficult position.

Well I believe that is the law, protected characteristic and all that. If they officially allowed their staff to misgender for example a trans person, they could get into a lot of trouble.

EvelynBeatrice · 07/07/2024 10:31

Re the last comment - I disagree - one man clearly identifiable as the cleaner by the customer and shop - is very different from all comers.
A man who is clearly identifiable is less likely to commit an offence. In my experience male cleaners in public loos are polite and unobtrusive. A young relative did this for a while as a student. He was told to leave the loo immediately if an unaccompanied child came in and to keep an eye on the door to check for men entering the ladies loo!
I’ve never felt threatened. That’s very different from any strange man at all having access.

EvelynBeatrice · 07/07/2024 10:34

It’s not the law that men should be treated as women in all circumstances, whatever Stonewall and the lobby may say. Single sex spaces are perfectly legal and not discriminatory - they are just not mandatory.

The expectation that you treat trans women as women is not the law. The Forstater judgment gives EA2010 protection to people who believe in biological sex and don't believe in genderism.

As long as you're not abusive to trans people, you can express your belief in biological reality at work.

And your post shows just how little you know of other’s lives. And how little you understand either children or pregnant women/women who have had babies.

FFS!. It takes me 40 minutes just to get to the supermarket on the bus. Not everyone has the privilege to have a car or to have a car on hand.

Yes, women and children use supermarket toilets. You must live a rather privileged life to not ever have done so.

GenerousGardener · 07/07/2024 11:07

Popped into Sainsbury's yesterday. Used the loos, they are not gender neutral. Ladies, Men’s, baby changing with loo inside.

Oh yes, but isn’t purposely calling people by a gender that is different to what they chose, or by a different name than they chose, considered abusive?

IPartridge · 07/07/2024 11:15

I have used toilets in Sainsbury's Tesco Waitrose and Morrisons recently. None were marked gender neutral.
They were the usual men's and women's.

This isn't what's under discussion. Treating so-called 'transwomen' as women would include accepting them coming into the women's toilets. She should be able to say that she doesn't agree with this and refuse to sign that she will treat so-called 'transwomen' as women in all circumstances.

Belief in biological reality is protected.

Oh my god.

Why has no one else thought of this??????

invisibleoldwoman · 07/07/2024 11:44

Last time I visited the loos in my local Tesco they weren't marked gender neutral. Just the usual women/men. Not sure if there is an accessible one. There are also wider issues for me concerning the treatment of staff, Particularly given the recent publicity given to nurses who are expected to share their changing rooms and loos with male staff and have been harassed by abusive men. One has been sacked for complaining and a group are suing the NHS. Also, Tesco are not being clear about their policy to customers. So I will follow it up. Thanks to all the people who have taken the time and trouble to clearly explain why this issue is important.

It seemed clear that Tesco want to make it as difficult as possible to complain about anything except particular topics. I found this thread Tesco Complaint from 2023 and it seems nothing has changed.

Most toilets in larger public spaces, shops/motorway service stations etc put out a notice saying a male cleaner is or might be in attendance. It is a question of consent.

Meanwhile I have been trying for a while to reduce my reliance on supermarkets for other reasons. So I will up my game with this.

Who do you think is volunteering at the food banks? Mine is GC central.
Oh by the way men are not welcome in female toilets.

And why do you think the women using the food banks and the shelters will never appreciate the ability to have single sex spaces in place? Do you think that women using those services will just have to then forget having single sex spaces in the places they work (now or in the future) or where they go when out in public?

Perhaps you have a rather narrow view of what women and children need shaped by your own political priorities rather than a view to current reality and the future needs of the people who think you are advocating for. If you really are focused on only advocating for women and children that is.

What does 'treating them as a woman' actually mean when it comes to a supermarket that would be difficult for you? Surely just treat them as normal customers, no need to gender anyone and last I knew woman don't go around greeting each other with a pat on the vagina so no need to be exposed to any penises

Omg get a grip. Who actually uses supermarket toilets anyway? If you can’t go 40 mins without needing to have a wee, then maybe you’ve got bigger problems than bumping into the 0.1% of the population.

The most common cause of urinary incontinence in women is childbirth injury and menopause, something a TW won't experience or understand.
