Which supermarkets can GC women shop in? Not Tesco it seems.

I try my best to boycott/avoid the worst offenders eg M&S, Costa.

I think I have been deluding myself that Tesco has not gone down the self-id path or only in a limited virtue signally manner. Very little 'rainbow' visibility locally or on the main or local websites. Now I discover that their official policy is that their staff and customer toilets are unisex. Everyone can choose whatever toilet they want. But, in my store on a recent visit, this isn't made obvious, eg signage, and they certainly haven't redesigned the toilets to allow proper privacy, eg fully enclosed cubicles with integral wash basins.

Here are the details - see Victoria Smith @glosswitch on X

All the major supermarkets are represented in my general area, albeit at a distance. Sadly Tesco is the nearest. Can anyone recommend the best one to support in terms of legal compliance with the Equalities legislation and some semblance of concern for women and children's safety and privacy?

There was a thread recently discussing who we are boycotting generally but I can't find it. If anyone has a link that would be helpful.

I can't easily find how to email the CEO of Tesco, the head office, or my local store. So I think I will have to work up to visiting locally and try to speak to the local manager.

Sadly, don't know which if any store is actually following the law anymore, maybe (hopefully) sainsburys.
But I do know my Dh had to use the toilets, and he said there weren't any bins in the stalls...so I guess Tesco policy's, aren't for TM....just TW...I wonder why

If u need tge toilet u should be able to use it without worrying that s biological man is in there. I hope if this happens that I will call the person.out

UtterlyOtterly · 06/07/2024 21:56

Kaleds in our town the public toilets are either grim or closed because of vandalism. The supermarket toilets are the best option if you want somewhere clean and not full of drugs paraphernalia.

It may surprise you but some people are out of their house for more than 40 minutes at a time.

How thoughtful of you to post such a comment.

I believe sainsburys have made their toilets and changing rooms gender neutral .
No discussion. No thought as to how the female staff might feel about it

PriOn1 · 06/07/2024 22:07

I use Aldi. There was no Pride paraphernalia, their prices are low and their products are good. That said, I prefer small supermarkets with fewer products, so if you love hypermarkets, my local Aldi wouldn’t be for you. I haven’t checked their toilets though as it’s only ten minutes from my house.

There's always one. 🙄

mcduffy · 06/07/2024 22:23

I switched to Morrisons from Sainsbury’s

tiggergoesbounce · 06/07/2024 22:51

Our tesco has a male, a female and a disabled one.

I do frequent some places that are unisex where its just individual cubicles for whomever to use.

I use them, because I have a young child who is being toilet trained and needs the loo quite frequently.

I'd like to be able to use a toilet with my child that is free from people with penises, as they're historically well-known to use said penises as weapons to assault women and children. With public toilets also known for being a lovely little spot for them to corner victims to carry out such assaults.

So just a big get over it, to any one who has medical issues, hygiene poverty, small children or just a desire not to wet yourself?

Your ability to see outside of your own needs, and think of others is shining through

Damn

Tesco Diversity training includes the expectation that you treat trans women as women or you are discriminatory and at risk if losing your job.
You are obliged to do this training and sign to say you agree with it if you want to work there.
As a woman I feel this puts me in a difficult position.

greenlettuce · 06/07/2024 23:17

I try and avoid places where these flags appear as I am simply not interested and feel it's a sort of brainwashing. People are entitled to their views and tbh I now am quite willing to give mine publicly.

It's the principle of the thing not the change of running into a bloke. The fact they think women don't deserve single sex facilities.

Hmm. Maybe those "problems" are having a heavy period or being pregnant or having a bladder infection or having IBS or any other gut or urinary tract disorder that increases urgency or maybe just getting on a bit or even something as simple as having more to do with your day than go to the supermarket straight from home and then go back home again.

Women in all those situations should be able to use the toilets without men around, if they don't want men around.

And OP is referring to Tesco staff toilets and shifts are a lot longer than 40 minutes.

The Maya Forstater ruling means that your gender critical beliefs are protected under the Equality Act. They shouldn't be able to fire you for refusing to sign on the basis that this requirement conflicts with your belief. Your union should support you, but I think most unions are captured so might not be of much help.

This makes it easy for employers to break the law.

I have a few medical conditions that mean sometimes i have to pee frequently.

Even if I didn't I'm often out for more than 40mins to do a supermarket trip.

E.g.
My local big Tesco is a 15 min walk away. Obviously it's 15 mins home again. That's 30 mins before I've even shopped.

I have to take DS to college. On a weds he's only in for 2 hours. College is the other side of town, near the "other" big Tesco. The bus can take anywhere between 30mins-1hour. Usually my mum picks him up on a weds so I bus there and straight back. Occasionally she can't, and it's not worth me coming home again in that time. So I have 2 hours to kill in tesco/Tesco cafe.

I use the toilets most weeks.

I often have to use supermarket toilets. As do children, the elderly, people with incontinence issues or other disabilities. Or just people caught short. That's why they have them!

Wedoourish · 07/07/2024 00:35

OMG …I regularly need a piss whilst out and about…I have never looked at the door rules beforehand 🤷‍♀️

Where I live, supermarkets don't even have toilets. None of them - they simply aren't designed that way. Once doing a supermarket shop, I can't go to the toilet. I just have to wait. Be glad they're there, I guess?

I do 🙋 I'm often out longer than 40 minutes. I use the tesco cafe sometimes where I have a drink, which makes me need to wee. My son is 3 and when he needs to go he needs to go. I'm not prepared to let him wee himself in my car on the way home.

Hopefully you realise how ridiculous your comment is.

invisibleoldwoman · 07/07/2024 06:11

Thanks everyone. I will talk to the local management and find a head office address to write to. Tesco is very convenient for me but I can source things elsewhere. Does anyone have a link to the recent thread about who we are boycotting?
