Since a new thread is looming, I'm just posting to say that the extensive demands of my new post-doc - I've been keeping that up my t-shirt sleeve😁- are such that I won't have time to update the bibliography of intertextual literary and other references for the second half of this thread. At a first glance, it looks as if the additions would at least double the original.
If anyone wants to take over the work, I can PM you my rough list... thought not.

Old music-hall song? My mother's mother had a repertoire of those.

It was sung to me by a fellow pupil in sixth form many years ago, and he said it was a music hall song.

Some of us sixth formers were rather original and eccentric kids. I mean, this was around 1970.

Apparantly Cream did a version!

The Cream version was in 1967, so that would explain my experience.

Cream 1967 sounds most likely. Mum still says that Eric Clapton is the greatest blues guitarist ever and she would have been 12 in 1967.

It's a music hall song. My favourite of the genre is a cheery little ditty called Father's a Drunkard and Mother is Dead.
