Caught the 10 am news bulletin beforehand, and the take on the Cass review was to play a clip from a transperson saying that the increase in referrals and transition was because of society being more accepting.

WTF are they playing at?

The Cass review explains why that is incorrect.

Societal acceptance
8.26 Although it is certainly the case that there
is much greater acceptance of trans identities,
particularly amongst Generation Z, and this may
account for some of the increase in numbers,
this is not an adequate explanation for the
overall phenomenon. Arguments that counter
this explanation include:
• the exponential increase in numbers within
a 5-year timeframe is very much faster than
would be expected for the normal evolution
of acceptance of a minority group;
• the rapid increase in numbers presenting
to gender services across Western
populations;
• the change in prevalence from birth-
registered males to birth-registered
females. The current profile of transgender
presentations is unlike that in any prior
historical period;
• the sharp differences in the numbers
identifying as transgender and non-
binary and presenting to gender services
in Generation Z and younger Millennials
compared to those over the age of 25-30.
It would be expected that older adults would
also show some signal of distress regarding
their gender, even if they felt unable to
‘come out’

RE: Labour's response - from the BBC headline article:

Shadow health and social care secretary Wes Streeting called on the government to "immediately act" and said a Labour government, if in power, would work to bring in the recommendations.
He added he was committed to working with the health secretary "to put children's health and wellbeing above the political fray".

Which I think is hopeful (my bold).

nauticant · 10/04/2024 10:20

Hannah Barnes was presented with Dr Aidan Kelly rubbishing Cass and Barnes pointed out that Kelly and others adopting this stance make their living from transitioning kids.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/04/2024 10:23

I predict more Labour activists throwing their toys out of the pram at Streeting's comments.

nauticant · 10/04/2024 10:24

Very good, the first third of WH was on Cass.

Emma Barnett, we'll miss you.

RE: follow-up data - I saw somewhere (lost it now) that, even though Javid gave permission for joined-up searching of the adult care records to provider follow-up data on 9000 patients, the vast majority of the adults services refused to co-operate, and the review was unable to look into this, so there are no substantive conclusions about long-term effectiveness of treatment and/or detransitioning. V. poor behaviour from NHS services

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/04/2024 10:27

Yes, I'm not sure why they couldn't be mandated to participate.

Hannah replied in such a calm, clear manner, I was so impressed. If that was me I'd have burst out laughing and said 'you want me to respond to those money grabbing ghouls, get to fuck'

This is indeed a watershed moment and will give strength to those in organisations that could see the harm caused.

My heart goes out to the poor children and young people who have been irreversibly damaged by this ideology, both physically and mentally.

Finally, thank you to Mumsnet for allowing us (the brilliant women on here, plus the rest of us lurkers/sometime commenters) to discuss this and bring the harms into the light.

👏👏👏

How will they be able to carry out research when they can't even determine which children will desist when left alone and which will continue to claim to be "trans"?

"There remains diversity of opinion as to
how best to treat these children and young
people. The evidence is weak and clinicians
have told us they are unable to determine
with any certainty which children and young
people will go on to have an enduring
trans identity"

She answered that question with such class 😂

Zebracat · 10/04/2024 11:37

Phew. I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for 6 years and I can finally take some air in. What really sickened me was how children were foregrounded by everyone. So many otherwise sane people falling hook line and sinker for the notion of these struggling butterflies who , through kindness could get their very own glittery wings and transcend the shittiness of everyday life.
What child wouldnt want that?
Im not sure that they are all gay either. Ours isnt, not that it would have mattered, but she was a child , a very late developer.totally ill equipped to understand sex , gender, sexuality. Being trans was really something, 5 years ago. A trans teenager could call the shots with parents, counsellors , social workers , teachers, doctors, their word was law. I remember saying over and over” but she’s a child, she’s suffered huge trauma, she is possibly autistic, she’s never shown any sign of gender dysphoria until now” .
I think the professionals we met, felt exactly the same as us, but couldn’t say so, and instead, did everything they could to keep it low key, so she didn’t get pulled into the system. I asked the person at Camhs whether Mermaids would help, and he suggested board games and swimming. Thank you so much , random CAMHS man.
it’s not true that anyone with a “trans child” is invested in this and becomes a tra. Thank you to everyone on this board, who listened to me when I was so afraid, and pointed me to real help, and fought the unicorn glitter shit. And thank you Hilary Cass for holding out a lifeline to the children, parents/ carers and professionals stuck in a scary place with real danger lurking. Thanks.

Slothtoes · 10/04/2024 11:37

If even seasoned professionals don’t know which child may or may not persist, then why is ANY child being in any way ‘transitioned’ including socially, then.

Anyone should be able to wear whatever hair and clothes they feel comfortable in and to call themselves whatever they want- but nobody else least of all schools or the NHS should be pretending to those kids or young people or vulnerable adults that they can in any way change sex, or that there is a wrong body to be born into, or that there is an intermediate state or non-state of being male or female. Nobody should pretend that accepting original birth sex is not an important part of mental and physical health.

Gender stereotypes are a trap, we can all agree on that. You can’t change sex, though. Nobody can and we all can see that. Feminine men and masculine women have always and will always exist by the cultural standards of the times they live in and that is completely fine and normal and healthy.

I think that was the review that was due to be done by the Uni of York within the lifespan of Cass.

Although it's timed out within Cass, that York review will be done but under the aegis of the NHS.

Apologies if already posted

https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/news/the-cass-review-mermaids-response/

"Everyone deserves access to timely, supportive and holistic healthcare. However, across all of the UK, the NHS is failing trans youth, with appalling waiting lists of more than six years, virtually no first appointments offered for over a year, and increased politicisation of the support offered to children and young people.

Trans youth tell us they want services which are accepting and respectful, which offer supportive spaces to explore their gender, and provide access to medical transition if and when they need it.

The Cass Review, an independent review of NHS England gender services for children and young people, published today (Wednesday 10 April) after almost four years, echoes much of this and recognises the current system is failing trans youth.

We are pleased the voices and experiences of trans young people appear to have been heard and respected, and we welcome Dr Cass’ calls for trans children and young people, and their families, to be “treated with compassion and respect”. We hope for the same, and for the sharing of clear, accurate information when discussing this topic.

However, we are concerned that some of the language in the report is open to misinterpretation and could be used to justify additional barriers to accessing care for some trans young people in the same way the interim report has been. We will publish our full analysis of The Cass Review in due course.

NHS England has published their immediate response to The Cass Review and written to all adult providers, explaining the changes they plan to make in the short to medium term. Very few of these will have an immediate effect on children and young people, and we will keep trans young people and their families informed about any changes that might impact them.

In the meantime, we call on NHS England, and the NHS across the UK, to resist pressures from those who seek to limit access to healthcare, listen to trans youth directly, and act urgently to provide gender services which are timely, supportive and holistic.

If you need support or have questions about what this might mean for yourself or your young person, please contact our helpline team. We’re here for you Monday – Friday, 9am – 9pm. "

Bloody hell. Talk about speaking out of both sides of your mouth.

I wonder if Cass will do a follow-up report, once she sees the pushback that these transactactivist organisations are going to launch.

It's almost exactly like threads on here where TRAs come out with that guff.

Except slightly less blunt 🤣

Parents of gender confused kids feeling so relieved and wanting to thank Hilary Cass is very moving. 💐

And I hope she reads all the responses.

Jeremy Vine discussing this now on Radio 2

Helleofabore · 10/04/2024 12:15

Ahhh Kofi? Didn’t they feature in giving evidence for stonewall? Leveraging suicide and threats.

HappierTimesAhead · 10/04/2024 12:18

Jeremy Vine focusing on the toxic debate rather than the report itself. Total waste of time.

Lots of detail/evidence behind each of the areas pictured here. Really helpful how the complexity is laid out.
