Sara Morrison vs Belfast Film Festival

Employers seem to be slow learners when it comes to women's rights! There’s another employment tribunal case being brought by a woman who attended and took the microphone at a Let Women Speak event in Belfast last year and has been treated very badly by her employer Belfast Film Festival as a result.

Looks like we’re going to have to keep gardening until they get the message.

disclaimer. I don’t know Sara and have no connection to BFF I’m just a woman who likes donating to causes that make a difference

We live in an old house and there is a linen press in our bedroom. It's a useful space but I have to stand on a chair to get things in and out, which is not so useful.

Presumably a cupboard was where cups were originally stored?

Yes, a board (shelf/table) for cups and general crockery. Doors were added later. See also 'sideboard' and 'bed & board' - in the latter the 'board' was the table food was served at.

Bord is Irish [Irish Gaelic, not Hiberno-English] for tableSmile

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 14/11/2025 11:44

thole(v.)
"be subjected to or exposed to, to endure without complaint," now archaic or Scottish and Northern English dialect, Middle English tholen, from Old English þolian "to suffer, endure, undergo; remain, survive; to lose, lack, forfeit," from Proto-Germanic stem *thulonan (source also of Old Saxon tholon, Old High German dolon, Old Norse þola, Gothic þulan "to suffer," German geduld "patience").

This case is more about free speech and discrimination on the basis of that free speech.

One point Sean Doherty kept making is - my clients agree that your client is entitled to her beliefs - ‘so this isn’t about what Sara said’.

His case is all that happened is Sara had a speech, Michelle was kind and caring, Sara promised not to do it again. But Sara started refusing to do her job - and since their ‘treasured partner organisations’ raised some complaints they wanted to have an investigation. A wee tiny kind investigation that’s all. Except Sara raised a grievance and now here we are.

Summary:
Sara shared a platform with extremists
We had to investigate
She went off sick and resigned

So the Judge is saying - no grandstanding as BFF have said that Sara is entitled to her sex realist beliefs. It’s not a political case.

Hence FWS being less central to this case. There are no penises in changing rooms. But there is a very big expensive screen with an 37 page erection strategy. Even the Judge has a copy.

How big is it? Do you need an Allen key?

'Thole' is still heard sometimes in parts of the North-west, definitely in Lancashire. I think in Yorkshire too.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 14/11/2025 11:50

Five minute warning just given.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 14/11/2025 11:52

'Thole' is used in Scotland too.

I love this so much. You’ve had me laughing so much today.

How you keep up all your work for these boards I do not know. I haven’t even caught up with Darlington submissions after watching the whole darn thing!

Im in awe @MyrtleLion

And knit at the same time and recovering from surgery; we must know your secret, Myrtle

Tried to post this comment earlier but the connection was waffling.

Ok, so something that's been bothering me about some of MD's statements from the day before yesterday -

She blamed SM for missing the PBS advert deadline for Pride Belfast '23 but said a similar thing about the (nonexistent) advert for '22: "I don't think we did it in time to make the brochure".
Said "people's reluctance to do the work was also a factor" in setting up the (nonexistent) '23 event.
Then she lied multiple times in a row about the blind carbon copy versus carbon copy July 3rd e-mail that was an accident or standard practice depending on which part of the sentence you listened to.

But the thing that really got my goat was when MD said - after being shown the 'ha ha woopsie I need new glasses' draft:

"Yes, and if SM had sent the e-mail it might well have been bcc'd."

The implication really irks me. "If she'd done her job". As if it would have made a difference, besides! Sara sending it from her own e-mail address would have exposed her to all the hyperbolic vitriol seen in the responses Nick Wallis published yesterday anyway, but MD wasted no time assigning blame of the blind carbon copy woopsie doxing-lite to Sara.

MD seems to let no opportunity pass her by to sneer at Sara in the tribunal and this exchange reeked of a purity test to me. Maybe I was reading too much into it.

Edited because I spelled Sara's name wrong

NoBinturongsHereMate · 14/11/2025 11:55

I don't think you were .

YouCantProveIt · 14/11/2025 11:55

Lots of to-ing and fro-ing but now guests are seated and the barristers will soon arrive.

Five minute warning @MyrtleLion

Drama here at the beginning of Day 5 of Morrison v BFF in Belfast. Morrison's legal team have informed the judge that they will not be ready to start until 2pm. The judge is livid. Says it is not for counsel to dictate when court sits.
