Liz Truss to propose law banning biological males from single-sex spaces

Liz Truss is to introduce a draft law that will seek to ban biological males from entering single-sex spaces and prevent children from attempting to change their gender.

Oh dear! I suspect association with Liz Truss will in fact mean loss of support for these proposals.

The former prime minister also wants her draft legislation to prevent under-18s from changing their gender.

Good on her!

I hope people will support / vote with their consciences rather than on personality.

WallaceinAnderland · 03/12/2023 19:12

It can't be ignored forever. There has to be clarification in law around single sex spaces. It's long overdue.

Arosebyanyname · 03/12/2023 19:13

She is the devil's work.

Grimchmas · 03/12/2023 19:14

She couldn't have suggested this while she was in power, eh?

Lottapianos · 03/12/2023 19:18

'Oh dear! I suspect association with Liz Truss will in fact mean loss of support for these proposals'

That's my worry too. She's been such an utter disaster that she's not actually a very useful ally

IwantToRetire · 03/12/2023 19:21

How many days was it she was "in power"? Which she never really was as the financial markets, rather than any of us, decided her financial plans were unworkable.

Even if it fails, it does mean that it puts the issue forward for public discussion. But do fear that the general public will just go, Liz Truss, must be rubbish.

Private Members Bills don't usually get very far. But it could be helpful in raising the profile of the issue and forcing MPs to clarify where they stand on this before the election.

Shame it's Lizz Truss bringing it. Hope that doesn't have a negative effect due to her poor reputation.

EasternStandard · 03/12/2023 19:37

Keep moving forward I reckon

Hopefully all helps

Froodwithatowel · 03/12/2023 20:09

Wonder how much this is someone whose career is over being sent to float the proposal and test out the ground.

ResisterRex · 03/12/2023 20:26

The wording will be worth looking at. She will surely be able to remember whatever advice she got while in government, and would've drafted it accordingly. If it gets to debate and vote stages then it should flush a lot out, party politics wise.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 03/12/2023 20:39

I suspect the people who do want men to hang around in womens changing rooms are going to oppose it whoever suggests it.

Codlingmoths · 03/12/2023 20:44

Surely this is unnecessary and raises lots more complex issues. Teachers or paramedics afraid to enter a bathroom where someone needs help as it might be a crime for example. Just clarify the definition of sex vs gender and the right to single sex spaces.

RedToothBrush · 03/12/2023 20:55

It probably won't get to the stage of making law.

In the meantime it will be interesting to see who debates / votes against her.

Take notes.

GardenCherisher · 03/12/2023 20:56

I recall Edwina Currie getting the same-sex age of consent lowered from 21 to 18, back in the day, the same woman who told pensioners to wear knitted hats indoors if they couldn't afford the heating bills...and many other disasters.

In her case though, it was a very obvious possibility that as a very human human being, who had had an affair with (!!!) John Major, and had had local government experience as well, she understood that people have sex even when someone says they shouldn't, and the current law was just making things worse for everyone.

Liz Truss - is this another self-involved and cynical political move, or is she raising this due to sincerely held personal views?

TempestTost · 03/12/2023 21:09

I think Liz Truss is pretty clear on the issue of males in women's spaces, and that she gets it, personally.

It's entirely possible that this is intended as a strategic play to clear up some issues for the future, without the expectation that it will pass now. That's not a bad plan though. It would be nice to get it sorted immediately, but it's probably not possible to make that happen. So, one step at a time.

ScribblingPixie · 03/12/2023 21:13

It doesn't matter who brings it forward - all discussion is good.

Floisme · 03/12/2023 22:12

I think the names of MPs who are allowed to propose a Private Members Bill are pretty much drawn out of a hat aren't they?

It doesn't sound as if Truss's name was drawn early enough for this to stand much chance of getting debated - and I imagine Starmer will be one of those hoping that's the case. But, if a debate does happen, watching how he handles it, who attends and how they vote will all be most instructive.

Needmoresleep · 03/12/2023 22:13

She is the mother of teenagers. She was also a much better Women’s Minster than her predecessor, Penny Mordaunt.

An excellent description of the thread.

Just clarify the definition of sex vs gender and the right to single sex spaces.
I thought that at first but I imagine the rules around Private Members Bills mean it has to be presented as new legislation?

I don't suppose Sunak will be best pleased either as it exposes his own inactivity on the subject, despite all his fine words.

So even if it doesn't get very far I think there could be lots of potential to cause embarrassment to both sides of the house.

Fine by me. Someone needs to get us out of this fug

This hasn’t been democratically dealt with, the GRA wasn’t voted on by the electorate

Happy to see it brought up the levels so we all can at some stage
